  • Capacitive grain, feed and pellet level sensor – 90-240V AC, relay output, 0-15 mm, IP67

    Capacitive proximity and material level sensor designed for detecting grain, compound feed, pellets and other bulk materials in bins, hoppers, tanks, feeding troughs and automatic feed supply systems.

    The sensor detects material approaching the active surface and switches the integrated relay output. Its electronic operating principle makes it possible to replace mechanical microswitches that may be affected by dust, moisture, material build-up or mechanical wear.

    Main purpose:
    The sensor monitors whether grain, feed, pellets or another bulk material has approached its active surface. When the material reaches the set level, the sensor switches the relay contact, which can be used to control a conveyor, auger, motor, valve, alarm or control relay circuit.

    Operating principle

    The capacitive sensor creates an electric field at the active sensing surface. When grain, pellets, feed or another material approaches this surface, the capacitance of the electric field changes.

    The sensor’s electronic circuit detects this change and switches the integrated relay. The relay contact can be used as a control signal for an automation system, drive, contactor, alarm or other control device.

    When the material moves away from the active sensor surface, the relay returns to its initial state according to the selected operating mode and delay setting.

    How does a capacitive sensor differ from a mechanical switch?
    The capacitive sensor detects material without a mechanical lever, paddle or actuated microswitch. As a result, there are no directly moving mechanical parts that could jam, wear out or become blocked by accumulated feed and dust.

    Electronic hopper level control

    The sensor can be used as an electronic fill-level control switch for a hopper or feeding tank.

    • detects when the material reaches the set level;
    • can stop a feed or grain supply conveyor;
    • can switch an auger conveyor on or off;
    • can send a signal to a control panel or PLC;
    • can activate a visual or audible alarm;
    • can protect the tank from overfilling.

    Adjustable detection distance

    The sensor’s specified detection distance is from 0 to 15 mm. The actual detection distance depends on the dielectric properties, moisture content, density and particle size of the material, as well as the installation location and sensor sensitivity setting.

    Important:
    Different materials are detected at different distances. Dry grain, moist feed, plastic pellets and other bulk materials have different electrical properties, so the sensor must be adjusted and tested using the actual material to be detected.

    Adjustable operating delay

    The sensor features an adjustable 0-2 hour delay function. It can be used to prevent frequent relay switching when the material level fluctuates briefly, pellets fall past the sensor or feed moves inside the tank.

    Short or zero delay

    • fast response to a change in material level;
    • suitable for overfill control;
    • suitable for fast-moving supply systems;
    • the relay switches almost immediately after material is detected.

    Longer delay

    • reduces the likelihood of false switching;
    • suitable for fluctuating material levels;
    • helps avoid frequent motor switching;
    • used for cyclic control of the feeding system.

    LED status indication

    The sensor is equipped with two-colour LED indication, allowing visual monitoring of the power, material detection or relay operating status. This simplifies sensor adjustment, commissioning and fault diagnostics.

    Replacement of a mechanical microswitch

    Capacitive electronic sensor

    • has no material-actuated lever;
    • lower risk of mechanical jamming;
    • detects material without contact;
    • better protected against dust and moisture;
    • sensitivity and delay can be adjusted.

    Mechanical microswitch

    • requires direct contact with the material;
    • the moving part may jam;
    • the contacts may be affected by dust and moisture;
    • the mechanism wears over time;
    • it may be blocked by adhering material.

    Practical application example

    For example, in a feed hopper the sensor is installed at the maximum permitted fill level. While the feed has not reached the sensor, the auger conveyor supplies material to the hopper.

    When the feed rises to the sensor’s active surface, the capacitive sensing field changes and the integrated relay switches. The relay signal is sent to a contactor or control panel, which stops the conveyor.

    When the feed level drops below the sensor, the relay returns to its initial state and conveying can resume automatically.

    Use by application

    For the farmer: suitable for controlling grain and feed levels in bins, feeding tanks and automatic troughs.

    For the livestock equipment installer: can replace a mechanical feed-level microswitch and transmit a signal to the feeding system controller.

    For the automation specialist: the relay output allows the sensor to be integrated into a contactor, interposing relay, PLC or alarm circuit.

    For the maintenance specialist: LED indication and adjustable sensitivity simplify inspection, adjustment and fault diagnostics.

    FAQ – frequently asked questions

    Does the sensor detect grain and feed?
    Yes. The capacitive operating principle allows grain, pellets, compound feed and other bulk materials to be detected, but sensitivity must be adjusted for the specific material.
    Can the sensor detect material through a plastic wall?
    Capacitive sensors can detect material through certain non-metallic walls, but the result depends on wall thickness, wall material and the product being detected. The function must be tested under actual installation conditions.
    Can the sensor be installed in a metal hopper?
    Yes, provided that the active sensor surface is correctly directed towards the material and the metal enclosure does not interfere with the sensing field. Careful sensitivity adjustment is required when installing in a metal tank.
    Can the relay directly control a conveyor motor?
    Generally, no. The integrated relay should control a contactor, interposing relay or controller input. The motor power circuit must not be connected directly if its current exceeds the permitted ratings of the sensor relay.
    Why are different relay current ratings specified?
    The permissible current depends on the load power factor. A higher current is permitted for a resistive load with cos φ = 1. For motors, contactors and other inductive loads, the permitted current is lower.
    What is the purpose of the delay of up to 2 hours?
    The delay helps prevent frequent relay switching caused by short-term material level fluctuations and can be used to control automatic feeding cycles.
    Can an IP67 sensor remain permanently submerged?
    No. IP67 indicates a high level of protection against dust and temporary immersion under specified test conditions, but it does not mean that the device is intended for continuous underwater operation.
    Can the sensor be used in an explosive grain-dust zone?
    No. The manufacturer states that the sensor must not be used in explosive atmospheres. Equipment specifically designed and certified for ATEX-classified zones must be selected.

    Electronic grain, feed and pellet level control

    The capacitive proximity sensor is designed to monitor the presence and level of grain, compound feed, pellets and other bulk materials in bins, tanks, feeding troughs and conveying systems.

    The electronic operating principle makes it possible to replace mechanical microswitches, reduces the risk of moving parts jamming and allows the detection sensitivity and operating delay to be adjusted. The integrated relay output can transmit a signal to a contactor, interposing relay, PLC or alarm system.

    The wide 90-240V AC supply range, 0-15 mm detection distance, adjustable delay of up to 2 hours, IP67 enclosure and two-colour LED indication make the sensor suitable for a variety of agricultural and industrial automation systems. The device must not be used in explosive or ATEX-classified zones.
