LED strip control – how to choose a controller
The controller is connected between the power supply and the LED strip. It lets you switch on, dim, and change colour or effects. Three things determine the right controller: strip type (single-colour or RGB), voltage (5, 12 or 24 V DC) and power.
Quick selection
Situation What to choose Single-colour strip, dimming only Single-channel dimmer (with remote or dial) RGB strip, colours and effects RGB controller with 3 channels and a remote Control through a wall or from another room RF (radio) controller – the remote does not need to be pointed at the receiver Receiver in a visible location, price matters IR controller – the remote is pointed directly at the receiver Long strip or controller power exceeded LED amplifier (repeater) for each additional section Stair lighting that switches on as you walk Stair controller with motion sensors Strip powered from USB (5 V) USB mini controller ⚠ What to check before buying
Parameter How to check Voltage The controller's operating voltage must cover the strip voltage (e.g. 5–24 V DC suits 12 V and 24 V strips) Power The strip power (W/m × length) must be lower than the controller power; a 20 % margin is recommended Number of channels 1 channel – single-colour strip, 3 channels – RGB Power supply Same voltage, power with a 20–30 % margin ℹ Example: a 5 m strip at 14.4 W/m = 72 W. A 72 W controller would suit this strip only with no margin, so it is better to choose a 144 W controller. A 12 V strip needs a 12 V power supply of at least ~90 W.Related components

Can a 12 V controller be used with a 24 V strip?
Only if the controller's operating voltage range includes 24 V (e.g. 5–24 V DC). A controller designed for 12 V only would fail on 24 V.
What is the difference between an RF and an IR remote?
RF works through obstacles and from another room; IR needs a direct line of sight between the remote and the receiver.
When is an amplifier needed?
When the strip power exceeds the controller power, or brightness drops along a long strip – the amplifier feeds the next section from a separate power supply while keeping the same control.
