Electricity meters – how to choose the right one
The right meter depends on three things: the supply current, the network (1 or 3 phases) and where the data has to go. Below you will find a quick selection guide, an overview of the groups, a separate section on CT-connected meters and the most common mistakes.

For houses, workshops and company lines up to 100 A: from simple kWh meters to multifunction meters with RS485 Modbus, M-Bus and several tariffs. E.g. Eastron SDM630 Modbus V2, ELGAMA GAMA 300 G3E.144, Zamel LEM-30.⚡ Three-phase via current transformers (CT) →
For high-current supplies, power distribution boards and building energy monitoring. Modular, multi-channel and panel-mount devices.⚡ Single-phase via current transformers (CT) →
For single-phase lines where current is measured via a transformer.DC meters and AC/DC indicators →
For direct-current circuits (EV charging, battery systems) and panel voltage / current / power indicators. They are listed in this group.⚡ Meters with current transformers (CT)
When the line current exceeds 100 A or the meter has to be installed in an existing power board, it is connected via current transformers. The CT reduces the line current to a standard 5 A or 1 A secondary current, and the meter recalculates it using the ratio set in the menu (e.g. 400/5). This way a single meter can measure a line of hundreds or thousands of amperes.
When to choose
Supply or line current above 100 A; CTs already installed in the panel; metering in the main power board or monitoring of several lines. How to select a CT
Primary current – by the maximum line current with a margin; secondary (5 A or 1 A) – the same as the meter input; the CT window must fit the cable or busbar. How to connect
P1 – on the supply side, S1 → start of the meter current input, S2 → end. Each phase has its own CT, and the phase sequence must match the voltage inputs.ℹ A sample wiring diagram with terminal numbers and the most common mistakes – see the Selec MFM384-R-C description.

Parameter What to check Why it matters Connection type Direct or via CT (…/5 A, …/1 A) Direct-connected meters usually handle up to 80–100 A; higher currents need CTs Current In / Imax E.g. 5(80) A, 10(100) A Imax must not be lower than the supply protection current Voltage and network type 230 V; 3×230/400 V; 3P4W or 3P3W Wrong type – wrong readings Accuracy class B (1), 0.5S Larger sites and analysis need a more accurate class MID Yes / no Required when billing is based on the readings Tariffs 1, 2, 4 or more When the price depends on the time of day Energy direction Single-direction or ⇄ bidirectional For import and export metering Communication S0, Modbus, M-Bus, Ethernet, Wi-Fi Must match your system Mounting DIN modules or panel 96×96 mm For planning space in the board ⇄Bidirectional metering
A bidirectional meter measures energy imported from and exported to the grid. Compatibility with inverter power / export control must be confirmed separately – bidirectional metering alone is not enough for that.⚠ Most common selection and wiring mistakes
Mistake Consequence ✗ Direct-connected meter chosen for a current above its Imax Terminals overheat, the meter fails ✗ CT installed backwards or S1/S2 swapped Negative power, energy counted as export ✗ CT and voltage input from different phases Wrong power and cos φ ✗ CT ratio not set in the menu Readings wrong by a fixed factor ✗ ⚡ CT secondary opened under load Dangerous voltage, CT damage ✗ Meter without MID used for billing tenants Readings are hard to justify on invoices ✗ RS485 A+/B− swapped or no 120 Ω at the end of the line No communication or intermittent data ⚡ Safe installation
- ⚡ Meters must be installed and connected only by a qualified electrician, with the power switched off and absence of voltage verified.
- ⚡ A CT secondary must never be opened under load – short-circuit the CT terminals before disconnecting the meter.
- Tighten the terminals of direct-connected meters to the torque specified by the manufacturer – a loose contact overheats.
- Protect the voltage measuring circuits according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- Follow the applicable electrical installation rules.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a direct-connected and a CT-connected meter?
A direct-connected meter carries the full load current, so it is usually rated up to 80–100 A. A CT-connected meter measures only the 5 A or 1 A secondary current, so it suits lines of hundreds or thousands of amperes. Is MID certification required?
If tenants or other consumers are billed from the readings, choose a MID model. MID is not required for internal energy monitoring.Which CT ratio should I choose?
Choose the primary current by the maximum line current with a margin, e.g. 250/5 or 300/5 for a 250 A supply. The ratio is set in the meter menu. Can the meter be connected to SCADA or BMS?
Yes, if it has an RS485 Modbus RTU, M-Bus or Ethernet (Modbus TCP) interface. Check the register map and communication settings. Is a bidirectional meter suitable for inverter export limitation?
It measures energy imported from and exported to the grid, but compatibility with a specific inverter's control must be confirmed separately. How much space does a meter take in the board?
Single-phase modular meters usually take 1–2 DIN modules, three-phase meters 4 or more. Panel devices are mounted in a 96×96 mm cut-out.Need help choosing?
Send us the supply current, network type and where the data needs to go – we will select the right meter and, if needed, the current transformers. All meters are delivered in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia.
