  • Duct temperature transmitter | -30-70°C | Modbus RTU | 24VDC PoM | RJ45 | 165mm | IP65 | Sentera Controls | DTS-M-160

DTS-M-160 – a Sentera Controls digital duct temperature transmitter with Modbus RTU (RS485) communication. Measuring range -30…+70 °C, accuracy ±1 °C, 165 mm stainless steel probe. Powered by 24 VDC via Modbus (PoM) – power and communication arrive over a single cable through the RJ45 socket.

    Key idea:
A single UTP cable with an RJ45 plug – and the sensor is already powered and passes the temperature to the Modbus network. No separate power wire or analog signal converters are needed.
    Measuring range
    -30…+70 °C, ±1 °C
    Communication
    Modbus RTU (RS485)
    Power supply
24 VDC via Modbus (PoM), RJ45
    Protection
    IP65, 165 mm probe

    Operating principle

The transmitter is mounted on the duct, and the 165 mm Ø8 mm stainless steel probe is inserted into the airflow. A single cable is connected to the RJ45 socket, carrying both the 24 VDC supply and the Modbus RTU signals: contacts 1, 2 – +24 VDC, 3, 4 – A, 5, 6 – /B, 7, 8 – GND.

The transmitter measures air temperature in the -30…+70 °C range with ±1 °C accuracy and provides it in Modbus RTU registers. The left green LED indicates power, and the flashing green LEDs indicate active Modbus communication.

Result – digital duct temperature in the controller, BMS or SCADA without analog transmitters, and the smooth steel probe is easy to clean, so the transmitter also suits hygienic ducts. The transmitter connects only to the Modbus network (not to a PT1000 or 0-10 VDC input); for Modbus power supply the DPOM8-24-20 is convenient, and for wall mounting the DTS-MB-BK-ASM bracket.

    Benefits DTS-M-160?
Fewer wires and fewer installation errors: power and data in one RJ45 cable, and the temperature is digital – no signal loss on long lines.

Original manufacturer documentation – technical data, wiring diagrams and installation instructions.

    Main functions

    • Modbus RTU (RS485) – the temperature is read by a controller, BMS or SCADA.
    • Power over Modbus – 24 VDC supply over the same cable via the RJ45 socket.
    • RJ45 connector – one plug instead of four terminals – fewer wiring errors.
    • 165 mm stainless steel probe – easy to clean, low maintenance.
    • Low costs – up to 0.192 W (Imax 8 mA) – minimal load on the PoM line.
    • LED indication – power and communication status is visible at a glance.
    • IP65 – also suitable for damp ducts.
    • Wall mounting – with the DTS-MB-BK-ASM bracket, the same sensor also measures room air.

    Where is it used?

    • Supply and extract air ducts
    • Modbus automation of air handling units
    • BMS duct temperature monitoring
    • Heat recovery units, duct heaters and coolers
    • Hygienic ducts that need cleaning
    • Sites already using Sentera Modbus devices
    • Large ventilation unit chambers and wider ducts

    On-demand operation

    For cleanroom designers.
The smooth 165 mm stainless steel probe is easy to clean in hygienic ducts.
    For HVAC commissioning engineers.
The LED shows power and Modbus communication, so the communication status is visible right at the transmitter.
    For commercial building ventilation installers.
The 165 mm probe reaches the airflow in wider ducts and ventilation chambers.

    Practical application

If air temperature has to be measured for a BMS in the chamber of a large ventilation unit or in a wide duct, then the DTS-M-160 with a 165 mm probe reaches the flow and passes the -30…+70 °C temperature with ±1 °C accuracy over the Modbus RTU network.

Application guide: how it is used in practice

The DTS-M-160 is connected to a Modbus RTU network; only what reads the temperature changes:

Site What is connected Result Installer's note
Air handling unit with a Modbus controller DTS-M-160 in a supply air duct → RJ45 → Modbus line The controller regulates the heater / fans according to the supply air temperature A unique Modbus address for each device
BMS site Multiple DTS-M-160 in different ducts → DPOM8-24-20 → BMS All duct temperatures on one network The DPOM8 supplies 24 VDC and acts as a Modbus repeater
Extraction with outdoor air comparison DTS-M-160 in an extract air duct The data is used for heat recovery efficiency and modes Range -30…+70 °C
Mounting the duct on a wall DTS-M-160 + DTS-MB-BK-ASM bracket The transmitter is mounted on a flat surface, e.g. a room wall The bracket is purchased separately

How to choose a Modbus temperature transmitter

Installation location / probe Recommended model
Duct, 85 mm probe DTS-M-080 (duct, 85 mm)
Duct, 165 mm probe DTS-M-160 (duct, 165 mm) ← this model
    Water pipe, strap-on DTP-M (pipe, 0–85 °C)
    DTS-M wall fixing DTS-MB-BK-ASM (bracket)
Rule: choose the probe length according to the duct size so that the element is in the middle part of the airflow: 85 mm for smaller ducts, 165 mm for larger ones. For water pipes – DTP-M.
When to choose another solution: passive sensors for controllers with a PT input – TUTSN (duct), ROTSN (room), FLTSN (with cable); for power and the Modbus line – DPOM8-24-20 (Power over Modbus module with a repeater).

    Pros

    • Modbus RTU – digital signal
    • 24 VDC supply via Modbus (PoM)
    • RJ45 connector – quick installation
    • IP65
    • Easy-to-clean 165 mm stainless steel probe
    • LED indication

    Cons / limitations

    • Accuracy ±1 °C – may not be sufficient for precision applications
    • No analog 0-10 VDC output – a Modbus controller is required; for a controller with a PT input choose the passive TUTSN
    • A 24 VDC Modbus power supply is required – the DPOM8-24-20 is intended for this
    • Range -30…+70 °C

    Safety and installation notes

    • Installation and connection are to be carried out by a qualified installer with the power disconnected.
    • Power supply 24 VDC only, via Modbus; observe the RJ45 pin assignment.
    • Install in ducts with a temperature of -30…+70 °C, without condensation.
    • Assign a unique address to each Modbus device.

    Suitable when you need:
    • to measure duct temperature on a Modbus RTU network;
    • to reduce the number of cables using Power over Modbus;
    • to integrate temperature into a BMS without analog converters.
    Check before use:
    • whether the controller / BMS has Modbus RTU;
    • whether 24 VDC PoM power is available (e.g. DPOM8-24-20);
    • whether the 165 mm probe length suits the duct.
Important reminder: The DTS-M-160 has no PT or 0-10 VDC output – it works only on a Modbus RTU network.
