Free cooling controller | 2×PT500 inputs | 0-10VDC/4-20mA/PWM | relay 2A | Modbus RTU | 85-264VAC | IP54 | Sentera Controls | FCCA8-DM
FCCA8-DM – a Sentera Controls free cooling controller: based on two PT500 sensors (outdoor and indoor) it switches on the fan and opens the damper when the outdoor air is cooler than the room air, thus cooling the room without air conditioning. The analog output controls the fan speed, the relay – the damper. Supply 85–264 VAC.
Key idea:
Cool outdoor air is a free source of cooling. The controller itself compares room and outdoor temperatures and uses outdoor air only when it makes sense – fewer air conditioner operating hours and lower electricity consumption.Inputs
2 × PT500 (outdoor / indoor)Fan output
0-10 / 2-10 / 0-5 VDC, 0-20 / 4-20 mA, PWMRelay
2 A, damperSupply / protection
85–264 VAC, IP54Operating principle
The controller is wall-mounted and powered with 85–264 VAC (L, N, PE). Two PT500 sensors are connected (TEMP1 – outdoors, TEMP2 – indoors), the fan control signal (AO1, GND), a relay for the air damper (NO, COM) and, if required, Modbus RTU (A, B); the 24 VDC / 500 mA output can power an external device.
Free cooling starts when the room is more than 1 °C warmer than the setpoint, the room-to-outdoor difference exceeds the set value (HR62) and it is above +5 °C outdoors; it stops when the room cools to 1 °C below the setpoint, the difference falls to 1 °C or the outdoor temperature drops below +4 °C. The relay opens the damper before the fan starts and closes it after the fan stops; the fan runs at variable or fixed speed, Boost is activated with a button, and the output type (0-10, 2-10, 0-5 VDC, 0-20, 4-20 mA or PWM) is selected via Modbus.
Result – the room is cooled with free outdoor air whenever possible, and the air conditioners work less. In the event of a fault the output drops to 0 % and the relay is switched off; after recovery there is a 20 s delay, and more than 10 alarms lock the unit until the power is cycled; the status is visible on an RGB LED.
Benefits FCCA8-DM?
A ready free cooling algorithm with damper control, a Boost button and Modbus RTU in one IP54 housing – no need to program a PLC.Technical specifications

- Free cooling logic – start and stop according to the room setpoint, the difference between room and outdoor temperatures, and the outdoor temperature.
- Damper control – the relay opens the damper before the fan starts.
- Boost – with a button or via Modbus – temporarily increased speed for an adjustable time.
- Universal analog output – suitable for EC motors and AC fan speed controllers with an analog input.
- Override via Modbus – the speed can be set from the BMS independently of the automatic logic.
- Alarm management – on a fault the outputs are switched off, on repeated faults – lockout.
- 24 VDC output – up to 500 mA to power an external device.
- SenteraWeb – via a Sentera internet gateway – remote monitoring and settings.
Where is it used?
- Server and telecommunications rooms
- Technical rooms with heat-emitting equipment
- Warehouses and production premises
- Offices and retail areas in the transitional season
- Buildings where air-conditioning operating time is to be reduced
- Electrical switchrooms and transformer rooms with heat dissipation
- Mobile communication and data transmission containers
On-demand operation
For server and telecommunications room caretakers.
Cooling with outdoor air continues as long as it is above +5 °C outdoors and the temperature difference is sufficient, so the air conditioner runs for shorter periods.For HVAC commissioning engineers.
The damper opening time, the HR62 difference and the output type are set via Modbus RTU for the specific site.For technical room ventilation installers.
A single device controls both the fan and the damper via a relay, no additional logic needed.Practical application
If the temperature in a server room is 1 °C above the setpoint and it is +12 °C outdoors, then the FCCA8-DM first opens the air damper with its relay and, after the set time, starts the fan, which is stopped when the room has cooled to 1 °C below the setpoint.Application guide: how it is used in practice
The FCCA8-DM adapts to different sites – only what is connected to its outputs changes:
Site What is connected Result Installer's note Server room AO1 → EC exhaust fan; relay → supply damper; PT500 – outdoor and indoor Cooled with outdoor air, so the air conditioner runs less often Install the outdoor sensor in shade Technical room with an AC fan AO1 → AC fan speed controller Fan speed according to cooling demand Select the signal type via Modbus A simple fixed-speed solution HR84 > 0 % – fixed speed The fan is only switched on / off according to conditions Suitable for simple fans with a speed controller Short-term intensive ventilation Boost button Temporary increased speed with automatic return Duration is set via HR85 Building with BMS Modbus RTU → A, B Status, alarms and Override from the BMS Cat5 / EIB cable How to choose a controller
Task Recommended model Returning warm air from the ceiling downwards (high rooms, warehouses, workshops) DSCA8-DM (destratification controller) Cooling the room with cooler outdoor air without air conditioning FCCA8-DM (free cooling controller) ← this model Rule: choose the controller according to the task: heat recovery from the ceiling – DSCA8-DM, cooling with outdoor air – FCCA8-DM. Both require two PT500 sensors (ordered separately) and a fan with an analog control input (EC motor or AC speed controller).When to choose another solution: PT500 sensors are ordered separately (Sentera PT500 series); for AC fans – speed controllers with an analog input; for heat recovery from the ceiling – DSCA8-DM.Pros
- A ready control algorithm with no PLC programming
- Universal analog output, including 4-20 mA and PWM
- Relay for a damper
- 24 VDC / 500 mA output for an external device
- Modbus RTU and SenteraWeb option
- IP54 enclosure, supply 85–264 VAC
Cons / limitations
- PT500 sensors are not included – order them separately
- One analog output – all fans are controlled by the same signal
- Relay 2 A – an intermediate contactor is required for a higher load
- Many settings (limits, times) can be changed only via Modbus RTU
Safety and installation notes
- Installation and connection are to be carried out by a qualified electrician / automation specialist with the power disconnected.
- Supply voltage 85–264 VAC: hazardous voltage on terminals L, N, PE; protective earthing is required.
- Relay contact load – no more than 2 A resistive load.
- Route PT500 sensor cables separately from power cables, avoid loops and unnecessary connections.
- Resetting the Modbus communication parameters – with a jumper on PROG pins 1 and 2 for at least 5 s.
Quick selection guide
2 × PT5000-10 VDC / 4-20 mA / PWMRelay 2 AModbus RTU85–264 VACIP54Suitable when you need:- to cool a room with outdoor air when it is cooler;
- to control a fan and damper with one controller;
- to reduce air conditioning run time.
Check before use:- whether the fan has an analog control input (EC) or an AC speed controller is used;
- whether two PT500 sensors have been ordered;
- the relay load (up to 2 A).
Important reminder: The FCCA8-DM is a controller: it generates a control signal but is not a fan power regulator; the PT500 sensors are ordered separately.FAQ
