Modular electronic fan speed controller | Modbus RTU | TK | 3A | 230VAC | DIN rail | Sentera Controls | MVSS1-30CDM
MVSS1-30CDM – Sentera Controls modular electronic speed controller with motor thermal protection (TK) terminals and an alarm output, mounted on a DIN rail in a control panel. Designed for single-phase voltage-controllable AC fan motors up to 3 A: speed is changed by varying the motor supply voltage within 30–100 % Us, with the command coming from an analogue 0-10 VDC / 0-20 mA signal or via Modbus RTU.
Key idea:
This is a controller for an automation control panel: it sits next to the other automation on the DIN rail, and its speed is dictated by a sensor, controller, BMS or external potentiometer. All wiring and settings are in one place – no need to climb up to the fan for maintenance. What it is for MVSS1-30CDM:
This model is designed for medium-power fans (up to 3 A) – duct fans in offices, classrooms, retail premises or 2–3 smaller fans together.Max. motor current
3 AControl
0-10 VDC / 0-20 mA / Modbus RTUPower supply
230 VAC ±10 %, 50–60 HzInstallation
DIN rail, IP20 (in control panel)Operating principle
The controller is mounted on a standard DIN rail in an electrical or automation control panel. Connect the 230 VAC power supply, the motor (U1, U2), the control signal to the Ai input and, if required, the Modbus RTU line (A, /B), and the motor thermal contacts to the TK terminals.
Electronic (semiconductor) control: the effective (RMS) value of the motor supply voltage is varied, so the output voltage is not purely sinusoidal. Us – supply voltage (230 VAC).
On receiving a 0-10 VDC or 0-20 mA signal (direction and type are selected with DIP switches), the controller varies the output voltage between the minimum (30–70 % Us, trimmer VR2) and maximum (75–100 % Us, trimmer VR1) limits. Trimmer VR3 sets the switch-off level – below it the motor stops. All settings can also be changed via Modbus RTU.
Result – the fan runs at exactly the speed required and consumes less electricity than when running continuously at full speed. Engineer's note: with an AC induction motor, reducing the voltage increases slip and rotor losses, so the savings are lower than with an EC fan or a frequency inverter. When energy efficiency is the top priority, choose an EC fan; when completely silent operation at low speed is essential, choose a transformer controller with a sinusoidal output voltage.
Benefits MVSS1-30CDM?
One module in the control panel combines analogue control, Modbus RTU integration, remote start / timer, an unregulated 230 V output and soft / fast start, while the TK terminals with alarm relay make motor overheating visible in the BMS.Technical specifications

Main functions
- DIN rail mounting – the controller sits in the control panel together with circuit breakers, relays and the controller.
- Analogue control 0-10 VDC / 0-20 mA – connects directly to CO₂, temperature or pressure sensors or a controller.
- Modbus RTU – speed, limits and status are controlled and monitored from the BMS or SCADA.
- TK terminals and alarm relay – motor overheating is visible immediately: a red LED in the control panel and a 230 V / 1 A signal to the BMS, a siren or a lamp.
- Adjustable min. / max. limits – the minimum limit ensures that the motor always starts and does not stand still while energised, overheating due to too low a voltage; the maximum limit restricts speed and noise.
- Switch-off level – at a low signal the motor switches off instead of “humming”.
- Unregulated 230 V output (up to 2 A) – for a damper actuator, valve or indicator lamp without an additional relay.
- Softstart / kickstart – soft start or reliable run-up at full speed.
- Timer mode – the fan runs for a set time after a pulse from a push-button or signal.
- SenteraWeb – via the Sentera internet module, the controller can be connected to the SenteraWeb cloud – remote control, monitoring and alerts via the internet.
Where is it used?
- Ventilation and automation control panels with AC fans up to 3 A
- CO₂-based ventilation of offices, schools and halls
- Temperature- or humidity-based extraction for warehouses, workshops and garages
- Duct fans with pressure control
- Buildings with BMS / SCADA where Modbus RTU is required
- Control panel upgrades replacing outdated controllers
On-demand operation
For the panel builder.
Standard DIN module – the controller is installed and wired together with the rest of the panel automation. For the automation / BMS integrator.
Modbus RTU allows the status to be read and the settings to be changed from a central system without additional converters. For the building administrator.
Ventilation runs on demand, and all controllers are in one place – in the control panel.Application guide: how it is used in practice
The same MVSS1-30CDM can be used in different projects – only what is connected to its inputs and outputs changes:
Site What is connected Result Installer's note Meeting room, classroom, office CO₂ sensor with 0-10 VDC output → Ai In an empty room the fan runs at min. speed, and speeds up automatically as people arrive Set the min. limit so that the motor rotates reliably (usually 40–50 % Us) Warehouse, workshop, garage Temperature sensor with 0-10 VDC → Ai On a hot day extraction increases, on a cool day it drops to the minimum Connect the motor TK contacts – overheating will be signalled via the alarm relay Duct system with constant pressure Pressure sensor or PI controller with 0-10 VDC / 0-20 mA → Ai As the filter clogs, the speed increases automatically and the pressure is maintained Select the signal type (V / mA) and direction with the DIP switches Building with BMS / SCADA Modbus RTU (RS485) line → A, /B Speed, limits and status are controlled centrally; several controllers with different addresses on one line Fit the NBT jumper on the last device on the line Bathrooms, toilets, smoking rooms Push-button or motion contact → SW (timer mode) After a pulse, the fan runs for the set time and then switches off automatically The timer duration is set via Modbus RTU Fan with air damper Damper actuator 230 VAC → L1 output When the fan switches on, the damper opens; when it switches off, the damper closes The L1 load (up to 2 A) is counted together with the motor current Manual control from the room External 10 kΩ potentiometer (e.g. Sentera SDP-X10K-NA) → +V, Ai, GND Speed is set by the operator, while the controller remains in the control panel Route the signal cable separately from power cables How to select the controller current
Rated current of the motor(s) Recommended model up to 1.5 A MVSS1-15CDM (1.5 A) 1.5–3 A MVSS1-30CDM (3 A) ← this model 3–6 A MVSS1-60CDM (6 A) 6–10 A MVSS1100CDM (10 A) Rule: controller max. current ≥ motor rated current (see the motor nameplate). The starting current is already accounted for by the manufacturer; no additional margin is needed. When connecting several fans – motors of the same type – add up their rated currents. The load on the unregulated L1 output (up to 2 A) is counted together with the motor current. When to choose another solution: for wall mounting next to the fan – EVSS1-30-DM (IP54); for an EC fan – an EC potentiometer or a controller with 0-10 VDC output; for a three-phase motor – a three-phase transformer controller (e.g. STR-4 series) or a frequency inverter; for a motor without TK contacts – the simpler MVS-1 series.Pros
- DIN rail module for an automation control panel
- Analogue and Modbus RTU control in one
- Adjustable speed limits and switch-off level
- Unregulated output for a damper or lamp
- Soft or fast start
- Flame-retardant PA housing (UL94 V0)
- TK terminals and alarm relay
Cons / limitations
- IP20 – for control panel installation only
- No knob – an external potentiometer is required for manual control
- Only for single-phase voltage-controllable motors; not suitable for EC fans
- More expensive than MVS-1 – if the motor has no TK contacts, MVS-1-30CDM is sufficient
- The output voltage is non-sinusoidal – some motors may hum audibly at low speed
Safety and installation notes
- Installation and connection must be carried out by a qualified electrician with the power disconnected.
- Check that the motor is suitable for voltage control and that its rated current does not exceed 3 A.
- Several fans can be connected to one controller, provided their total current does not exceed 3 A.
- Leave space in the control panel for heat dissipation – operating temperature up to +40 °C.
- In a Modbus network with AC power supply, do not connect the GND terminal to other devices or to the CNVT-USB-RS485 converter – this may damage the communication electronics.
