Digital electronic motor protection relay | 0.3–16A | 230V AC | multifunction protection
Digital electronic motor protection relay designed to monitor electric motor operating parameters and provide protection functions. The device monitors current through external CT current transformers as well as supply parameters and can respond to overload, undercurrent, locked rotor, high current, phase loss, current imbalance, ground fault, overvoltage and undervoltage.
The protection current adjustment range is 0.3–16A, with a supply voltage of 230V AC, 50/60Hz. Motor current is measured using external current transformers (CTs). The integrated LED display allows operating parameters to be monitored and protection settings to be configured, while adjustable delays allow the relay to be adapted to different motor starting and operating characteristics.
Multifunction motor protection in one deviceThe relay combines the main electric motor protection functions: overload, undercurrent, locked-rotor, high-current, phase-loss, current-imbalance, ground-fault, overvoltage and undervoltage monitoring. Motor current is monitored through external CT current transformers. Manual or automatic reset is available after certain faults.

The relay continuously monitors the motor's electrical parameters. Motor current is measured using external CT current transformers. When a monitored value rises above or falls below the configured protection threshold and the corresponding delay expires, the relay output contacts change state.
In a practical motor control circuit, the 1NO + 1NC contacts are normally used in the contactor control circuit and for fault signalling. The relay itself is not intended to switch the full motor power current directly.
Current measurement via external CTsCurrent is measured using CT current transformers installed separately from the main relay body. The monitored conductors are routed through the corresponding CTs, and their measurement signals are transmitted to the motor protection relay.
Fault condition Protection function Excessive continuous current Overload protection Current too low Undercurrent protection Locked rotor Locked-rotor protection Very high current Fast high-current protection Current imbalance Phase-current imbalance protection Phase loss Phase-loss protection Leakage / ground current Ground-fault protection Voltage too high Overvoltage protection Voltage too low Undervoltage protection Overload protection
The main function of the relay is to protect the motor from prolonged overload. The overload threshold is set according to the rated current of the specific motor.
The protection operating time can be selected using two principles: definite time or inverse time.
Mode Setting Definite time 0.5–60s Inverse time 1–5 Trip Class Definite-time and inverse-time protectionIn definite-time mode, protection trips after the configured delay has elapsed. In inverse-time mode, the trip time depends on the magnitude of the overload – a greater overload generally results in a faster protection response.
Undercurrent protection
The relay includes an undercurrent function that allows monitoring of conditions in which the motor operating current falls below the configured threshold.
This function may be useful, for example, in pump, conveyor or other mechanical systems where abnormally low current may indicate loss of load, dry running or mechanical disconnection.
Operating delay 0.5–60s Startup delay
During motor startup, current can be several times higher than normal operating current. To prevent this temporary starting condition from being incorrectly interpreted as a fault, a 0–200 second startup delay can be configured.
Startup delay: 0–200sThe startup delay allows protection operation to be coordinated with the acceleration time of the specific motor. This is especially relevant for high-inertia fans, pumps, conveyors, compressors and other drives that are more difficult to start.
Locked-rotor protection
If the motor rotor becomes locked, the current may increase significantly and overheat the motor windings within a short period of time. The relay includes dedicated locked-rotor protection.
Locked-rotor threshold 1.5–8 times the configured overload current Operating delay 3s Fast high-current protection
The relay includes a very high-current monitoring function. The threshold is set at 10 times the overload-current setting, with a response time of ≤50ms.
This does not replace a short-circuit protective deviceAlthough this function is described as short-circuit protection, the electronic relay control output is not a power switching device capable of interrupting short-circuit current. The motor power circuit must still use a correctly selected circuit breaker, fuses or motor protection circuit breaker with the required short-circuit breaking capacity.
Current imbalance protection
Differences between motor phase currents may be related to problems in the power supply system, contacts, cables or the motor itself. The relay allows phase-current imbalance to be monitored.
Current imbalance threshold 10–50% Operating delay 5s Phase-loss protection
Loss of one phase can cause a significant increase in the current of the remaining phases, reduced torque and motor overheating.
Phase-loss protection operating delay – 2 seconds.
Ground-fault / leakage-current protection
Designed to monitor ground-fault or residual-current conditions.
Leakage-current threshold 30mA–2.5A Operating delay 1s Overvoltage protection
An increase in supply voltage can adversely affect motor insulation and other control equipment. The relay allows the overvoltage threshold to be configured.
Overvoltage threshold 65–690V Operating delay 5s Undervoltage protection
Insufficient supply voltage can reduce motor torque and increase current. The relay allows a minimum voltage threshold to be configured.
Undervoltage threshold 65–600V Operating delay 5s Automatic and manual reset
After a protection trip, the relay supports several reset modes. This allows selection of whether the device should be reset manually by the operator, automatically after the fault clears, or by cycling the supply power.
Parameter Value Automatic reset time 0.1–30 min. Number of automatic reset attempts 1–10 times Reset modes Manual / automatic / power cycle Use automatic restart with cautionIf automatic reset is enabled, the motor control circuit may automatically become ready for restart after the fault condition disappears. For machinery where an unexpected restart could create a hazard to people or equipment, additional safety interlocking measures must be provided.
Output contacts
The relay has 1NO + 1NC output contacts. They can be used to interrupt the contactor control circuit and to provide fault signalling.
Contact rating5A / 230V AC with a resistive load.
A 5A contact is not a 16A motor power contactThe relay's 0.3–16A range refers to the monitored motor current / protection setting range. Current is measured through external CT current transformers. The 5A / 230V AC output contacts are control contacts. The motor power circuit is normally switched through a separate contactor.
Digital LED display
The integrated LED display is used to show operating parameters, settings and protection states. The electronic design allows protection thresholds and timings to be set more accurately than with a conventional mechanical thermal overload relay.

Practical application example
The rated current of a pump motor is 8A. Motor current is monitored through external CT current transformers, while the appropriate overload-current setting and trip characteristic are configured in the motor protection relay according to the project requirements and motor data.
During startup, for example, a startup delay of several seconds can be used so that normal starting current is not incorrectly interpreted as a fault.
If the pump mechanism jams and the current rises to the configured locked-rotor protection threshold, after 3 seconds the relay changes the state of its output contacts and stops the motor through the contactor control circuit.
If the pump begins operating without load and the current falls below the configured threshold, undercurrent protection may trip.
At the same time, the device can monitor phase-current imbalance, phase loss, ground fault and supply-voltage limits.
Mounting
The relay is designed for panel-mounted, flush installation in the front section of an electrical or automation panel. The main relay body is recessed into the panel so that the LED display and control elements remain visible and accessible from the front.
External CT current transformers are installed separately from the main relay unit on the monitored power-circuit conductors and connected according to the wiring diagram provided by the manufacturer.
Panel-mounted, flush installationThis relay version is not designed for DIN-rail mounting. The main unit is installed flush into the electrical panel, while separate external CTs are used for current measurement.

Important installation and electrical safety informationThe relay and external CT current transformers must be installed and configured by a qualified electrical specialist. The CTs must be connected according to the manufacturer's wiring diagram for the specific device. Protection current, delay, voltage, current imbalance and automatic reset parameters must be selected according to the specific motor nameplate, starting characteristics, driven mechanism and project requirements.
The relay does not replace a correctly selected short-circuit protective device or power contactor. When automatic reset is used, the risk of unexpected motor restart must be assessed and all necessary mechanical and electrical safety interlocks must be provided.
