  • Potentiometer for EC fan with dry contact | Sentera Controls | SDP-E0US-DC

    SDP-E0US-DC – Sentera Controls potentiometer with dry contact, designed for EC fans and other equipment requiring a stepless control signal. Supplied with 5–24 VDC, the Ao output is switched by jumper to voltage (0–100 % Us), current (0–20 mA) or PWM (1 kHz) mode; the min. and max. limits are set with two trimmers.

    Key idea:
    The operator sets the EC fan speed with the knob, and the integrated dry contact (up to 1 A) allows an external device to be switched on or off remotely – e.g. a damper actuator, heater enable or start of another fan.
    Power supply
    5–24 VDC
    Ao output
    0–100 % Us / 0–20 mA / PWM 1 kHz
    Dry contact
    Max. 1 A
    Protection
    IP44 flush-mounted / IP54 surface-mounted

    Operating principle

    The potentiometer is installed in the room where the operator wants to change the ventilation intensity, while the controlled EC fan or controller may be in a technical room. A 5–24 VDC supply (Us, GND) and the output signal (Ao, GND) are connected to the EC motor control input, and the dry contact (DC) – into the start circuit of the external device.

    This is not a power controller: only signal current flows through the potentiometer (own current consumption – 19 mA). The EC fan electronics change the motor speed themselves according to the received 0-10 V, 0-20 mA or PWM command, so the motor power has no influence on the choice of potentiometer.

    The output type is selected by jumper: voltage 0–100 % Us (load RL ≥ 50 kΩ), current 0–20 mA (RL ≤ 500 Ω) or PWM 1 kHz with a 3.3 VDC or 12 VDC level (RL ≥ 50 kΩ). The MIN trimmer is set to 0–80 % Us, MAX – 20–100 % Us; a control range of no less than 20 % is always maintained between them. If MIN is set higher than MAX, the control is reversed (from max. to min.).

    Engineer's note: in voltage mode the output is proportional to the supply voltage. With a 10 VDC supply a 0–10 V signal is obtained; with a 24 VDC supply the output must be limited with the MAX trimmer (≈ 42 % Us ≈ 10 V) so that the EC motor's 0-10 V input does not receive excessive voltage.

    Benefits SDP-E0US-DC?
    One potentiometer suits 0-10 V, 0-20 mA and PWM controlled EC fans and actuators, and the limits are set on site with trimmers – no computer or programming needed. The dry contact additionally replaces a separate switch or relay.

    Application guide: how it is used in practice

    SDP-E0US-DC can be adapted to different sites – only what is connected to its output changes:

    Site What is connected Result Installer's note
    Apartment or house with a heat recovery unit Ao → EC fan 0-10 V input, Us – 10 VDC source The occupant sets the ventilation intensity When supplied with 24 VDC – limit to ≈ 10 V with the MAX trimmer
    EC duct fan in an office Ao (0-10 V) → EC motor control input Speed changes steplessly, the min. limit ensures the hygienic air volume Set the MIN trimmer according to the design min. flow
    Damper with a proportional actuator Ao (0-10 V or 0-20 mA) → actuator control input Manual damper position setting In current mode, load ≤ 500 Ω
    EC fan with a PWM input Ao (PWM 1 kHz, 3.3 / 12 VDC) → PWM input Stepless speed control without an analogue signal Check what PWM level the fan accepts
    AC fan with an electronic controller Ao (0-10 V) → Ai input of a Sentera EVS or MVS controller Potentiometer in the room, controller in a technical room Connect the signal GND to the controller GND
    Fan with an air damper or heater Dry contact DC → external device enable circuit An auxiliary device is switched on together with the fan Contact load – no more than 1 A

    How to select the controller current

    Rated current of the motor(s) Recommended model
    OFF position needed, supply 5–24 VDC SDP-E0US-AT (OFF, trimmers)
    Continuous min. flow needed (no OFF), 5–24 VDC SDP-E0US-BT (no OFF, trimmers)
    Dry contact for an external device needed, 5–24 VDC SDP-E0US-DC (dry contact 1 A) ← this model
    OFF position and Modbus RTU needed, 24 VDC SDP-M010-AT (OFF, Modbus RTU)
    Modbus RTU needed without OFF position, 24 VDC SDP-M010-BT (no OFF, Modbus RTU)
    Modbus RTU and dry contact needed, 24 VDC SDP-M010-DC (Modbus RTU, dry contact 1 A)
    Simple 0–Us signal with OFF and dry contact needed SDP-X10K-NA (10 kΩ, dry contact 1 A)
    Rule: first determine which signal (0-10 V, 0-20 mA, PWM) and which supply voltage are needed, then whether an OFF position, a dry contact or Modbus RTU is required. Motor power and current have no influence on the selection – only the control input load matters (≥ 50 kΩ in voltage and PWM mode, ≤ 500 Ω in current mode). Several EC fans in parallel – only if the total input resistance meets this limit.
    When to choose another solution: For Modbus RTU control and settings – SDP-M010 series (AT / BT / DC); for supply directly from the 230 VAC mains – SPV-8 or MTVN1 series; for digital control with display and steps – RDCV9-AD; for AC fans – electronic EVS-1 controllers.

    Pros

    • Integrated dry contact up to 1 A
    • Three output types: voltage, current, PWM
    • Wide supply range 5–24 VDC
    • MIN / MAX limits and reverse control with trimmers
    • Low current consumption – 19 mA
    • Flush-mounted IP44 or surface-mounted IP54 installation

    Cons / limitations

    • No OFF position – the knob always leaves the min. signal
    • A separate 5–24 VDC supply is required – cannot be supplied directly from 230 VAC
    • In voltage mode the output equals % of Us – with a 24 VDC supply, MAX must be limited
    • No Modbus RTU – settings are changed only with trimmers
    • This is a signal source – it does not directly control AC motor speed

    Safety and installation notes

    • Installation and connection must be carried out by a qualified electrician with the supply to all connected devices disconnected.
    • Supply voltage – no higher than 24 VDC; connecting 230 VAC to the terminals is prohibited.
    • Before switching on the EC fan, check the output voltage – it must not exceed the permissible limit of the motor control input.
    • Observe the load limits: ≥ 50 kΩ in voltage and PWM mode, ≤ 500 Ω in current mode.
    • Dry contact load – no more than 1 A.
    • Use at a temperature of 0–50 °C with relative humidity < 95 % non-condensing.

    For EC fans
    Suitable when you need:
    • control EC fan speed manually and steplessly;
    • set the min. and max. speed without programming;
    • control an external device at the same time via the dry contact;
    Check before use:
    • the EC fan control input type (0-10 V, 0-20 mA or PWM) and its impedance;
    • the available 5–24 VDC power source;
    • whether an OFF position, a dry contact or Modbus RTU is needed.
    Important reminder: SDP-E0US-DC is a control signal source, not a power controller – the motor current does not flow through it.

    FAQ

    Does it have an OFF position?
    No, there is no OFF position; the dry contact is intended for controlling an external device.
