  • Potentiometer for EC fan without OFF position | Sentera Controls | SDP-M010-BT

SDP-M010-BT – Sentera Controls potentiometer without OFF position, with Modbus RTU communication, designed for EC fans and other equipment with a control input. Supplied with 24 VDC (PoM compatible), Ao output – 0-10 VDC, 0-20 mA or PWM 1 kHz, while Vmin, Vmax, control direction and output type are set via Modbus RTU.

    Key idea:
This is a manual potentiometer that is also a Modbus RTU network device: the user changes the speed with the knob, while the integrator sets the limits and output type from a computer or BMS without opening the enclosure.
    Power supply
    24 VDC (PoM)
    Ao output
    0-10 VDC / 0-20 mA / PWM 1 kHz
    Communication
    Modbus RTU (RS485)
    OFF / contact
    OFF – no

    Operating principle

The potentiometer is installed in the room, while the controlled EC fan may be in a technical room. A 24 VDC supply (Us, GND), the Modbus RTU line (A, /B) and the output signal (Ao, GND) to the EC motor control input are connected.

This is not a power controller: only signal current flows through the potentiometer. The EC fan electronics change the speed themselves according to the received 0-10 VDC, 0-20 mA or PWM command.

Turning the knob changes the output steplessly between Vmin and Vmax. Vmin is set within 0–7 VDC / 0–14 mA / 0–70 % PWM, Vmax within 7.5–10 VDC / 15–20 mA / 75–100 % PWM. These limits, the control direction (min.→max. or max.→min.) and the output type are changed via Modbus RTU.

Engineer's note: the 24 VDC supply can be delivered together with the Modbus line (PoM), so a single four-core cable to the potentiometer is sufficient. Unlike SDP-E0US, the voltage output here is always 0-10 VDC, regardless of the supply.

    Benefits SDP-M010-BT?
Manual control and Modbus RTU integration in one enclosure: the BMS sees and can change the settings, while the user in the room has a familiar knob.

    Manufacturer documentation

Original manufacturer documentation – technical data, wiring diagrams and installation instructions.

    Main functions

    • Modbus RTU – Vmin, Vmax, direction and output type are set remotely; the potentiometer is visible in the BMS.
    • Three output types – 0-10 VDC, 0-20 mA or PWM 1 kHz.
    • Fixed 0-10 VDC range – the output does not depend on the supply voltage – no need to limit it.
    • PoM compatibility – 24 VDC supply can be delivered together with the Modbus line.
    • Universal enclosure – flush-mounted IP44 or surface-mounted IP54 installation.

    Where is it used?

    • Buildings with BMS where manual ventilation control must be visible in the system
    • Offices, meeting rooms, hotel rooms
    • Heat recovery units and EC duct fans
    • Damper actuators with 0-10 V / 0-20 mA control
    • Sentera systems with PoM power supply

    On-demand operation

For the automation / BMS integrator.
Settings and status are available via Modbus RTU – without additional converters.
    For the ventilation installer.
One model with three output types; limits are changed without dismantling the enclosure.
    For the user.
A conventional knob in the room; the speed changes steplessly.

Application guide: how it is used in practice

SDP-M010-BT can be adapted to different sites – only what is connected to its outputs changes:

Site What is connected Result Installer's note
Office with BMS Modbus RTU → A, /B; Ao (0-10 VDC) → EC fan The user adjusts on site, the BMS sees the set value A unique Modbus address for each device
Heat recovery unit in an apartment Ao (0-10 VDC) → heat recovery unit EC fan input Stepless control of ventilation intensity Set Vmin according to the min. hygienic air volume
Damper with a proportional actuator Ao (0-20 mA or 0-10 VDC) → actuator Manual damper position control In current mode, load ≤ 500 Ω
EC fan with a PWM input Ao (PWM 1 kHz) → PWM input Stepless speed Change the output type via Modbus RTU

How to select the controller current

Rated current of the motor(s) Recommended model
OFF position needed, supply 5–24 VDC SDP-E0US-AT (OFF, trimmers)
Continuous min. flow needed (no OFF), 5–24 VDC SDP-E0US-BT (no OFF, trimmers)
Dry contact for an external device needed, 5–24 VDC SDP-E0US-DC (dry contact 1 A)
OFF position and Modbus RTU needed, 24 VDC SDP-M010-AT (OFF, Modbus RTU)
Modbus RTU needed without OFF position, 24 VDC SDP-M010-BT (no OFF, Modbus RTU) ← this model
Modbus RTU and dry contact needed, 24 VDC SDP-M010-DC (Modbus RTU, dry contact 1 A)
Simple 0–Us signal with OFF and dry contact needed SDP-X10K-NA (10 kΩ, dry contact 1 A)
Rule: choose according to your needs: OFF needed – AT, constant min. airflow needed – BT, an external device needs to be controlled – DC. Motor power has no influence on the selection – only the control input load is checked (voltage / PWM ≥ 50 kΩ, current ≤ 500 Ω). If Modbus is not required and the supply is other than 24 VDC – choose SDP-E0US.
When to choose another solution: without Modbus, with 5–24 VDC supply and trimmers – SDP-E0US series; for 230 VAC supply with Modbus – SPV-8 series; with a display and stepped mode – RDCV9-AD; for AC fans – EVS-1 controllers.

    Pros

    • Modbus RTU for settings and monitoring
    • 0-10 VDC output is independent of the supply
    • Three output types
    • Suitable for PoM power supply
    • IP44 / IP54 installation

    Cons / limitations

    • No OFF position
    • A 24 VDC supply is required – cannot be supplied directly from 230 VAC
    • Limits can be changed only via Modbus RTU (a converter and software are required)
    • This is a signal source – it does not directly control AC motor speed

    Safety and installation notes

    • Installation and connection must be carried out by a qualified electrician with the supply to all connected devices disconnected.
    • Supply – 24 VDC; connecting 230 VAC to the terminals is prohibited.
    • Observe the output load limits: voltage / PWM ≥ 50 kΩ, current ≤ 500 Ω.
    • Connect the Modbus line with twisted-pair cable, observing the RS485 topology (line, not star).
    • Use at 0–50 °C, < 95 % rH non-condensing.

    Quick selection guide

    24 VDC
    Modbus RTU
    0-10 V / 0-20 mA / PWM
    be OFF
    IP44 / IP54
    Suitable when you need:
    • control an EC fan manually and see the setting in the BMS;
    • change Vmin / Vmax and the output type remotely;
    • maintain constant min. ventilation;
    Check before use:
    • whether a 24 VDC (or PoM) supply is available;
    • the EC fan control input type and impedance;
    • the Modbus address plan and RS485 line topology.
Important reminder: SDP-M010-BT is a control signal source, not a power controller – the motor current does not flow through it.

    FAQ

Can it be used without Modbus?
Yes, as a conventional potentiometer – however, Vmin / Vmax and the output type can only be changed via Modbus RTU.
    What is PoM?
A Sentera solution where the 24 VDC supply is delivered together with the Modbus RTU line.
What is the output when supplied with 24 VDC?
In voltage mode the output is 0-10 VDC – no additional limiting is needed.
What is the difference between AT, BT and DC?
AT has an OFF position, BT does not, DC has a dry contact for an external device.
Is it suitable for AC fans?
Not directly; it can provide a 0-10 V command to an electronic controller, e.g. EVS-1.
