  • Smart outdoor temperature and humidity sensor-controller | -30…70°C | 0-100%rH | Modbus RTU | PoM 24VDC | RJ45 | IP65 | Sentera Controls | OCTHM-R

The OCTHM-R is a Sentera Controls smart outdoor temperature and humidity sensor-controller: it measures temperature (-30…+70 °C) and relative humidity (0–100 % rH) outdoors or in a humid environment and, using the integrated algorithm, generates a control signal (0–100 %) that is transmitted via Modbus RTU to a Sentera speed controller, an EC fan or a BMS. Power supply – 24 VDC via Modbus (PoM), RJ45; all parameters are accessible via Modbus RTU.

    Key idea:
This is a transmitter and a controller in one: it needs no separate controller, because the output is calculated in the sensor itself according to the set temperature and humidity ranges. The output is determined by the higher of the two values, and either parameter can be disabled – e.g. to control by temperature only or by humidity only.

    Operating principle

The sensor is fixed outdoors or in a humid room (2 holes of Ø 3.4 mm) and connected with a single RJ45 cable carrying the 24 VDC supply (PoM) and Modbus RTU communication (A, /B).

Integrated sensors measure temperature and relative humidity; a range is set for each quantity within which the output varies 0–100 %, the output is determined by the higher of the two calculated values, and either quantity can be disabled. The calculated control signal (0–100 %) is provided in a Modbus register – it is read by a Sentera controller, an EC fan with Modbus or the BMS; all parameters are changed over Modbus RTU, and the firmware is updated over the network.

Result – demand-controlled ventilation without a separate controller: as humidity or temperature rises the fan speeds up, and when it falls it slows down to the minimum, while the IP65 enclosure allows measurement outdoors and in damp areas.

    Benefits OCTHM-R?
Sensor and control algorithm in one – less equipment in the control panel, a simpler design and faster commissioning, while Modbus RTU allows later integration into a BMS.

Original manufacturer documentation – technical data, wiring diagrams and installation instructions.

    Main functions

    • Integrated control algorithm – the output is generated according to the set T and rH ranges, without a separate controller.
    • Parameters that can be disabled – can be controlled by temperature only or humidity only.
    • Control via Modbus – the control signal is read from a register by a Modbus device or BMS.
    • Modbus RTU – all parameters and measurements are accessible remotely.
    • Firmware update – over the Modbus RTU network.
    • Light sensor – adjustable “active” and “standby” illumination levels – e.g. for quieter operation at night.
    • PoM – power and communication over a single RJ45 cable.
    • Configuration – Configuration and monitoring – the free Sentera 3SModbus software (via the CNVT-USB-RS485 converter) or the Sensistant Modbus configurator.

    Where is it used?

    • Open areas
    • Multi-storey and underground car parks
    • Damp technical rooms
    • Ventilation based on outdoor temperature and humidity
    • BMS with Modbus RTU
    • Laundries and damp utility rooms
    • Greenhouse ventilation according to outdoor air

    On-demand operation

For underground car park ventilation installers.
The IP65 sensor-controller calculates the fan signal itself in a humid environment and passes it on over Modbus RTU.
    For greenhouse farms.
A control signal based on the higher of the T and rH values allows ventilation according to the actual temperature and humidity.
    For Sentera PoM system integrators.
A single RJ45 cable supplies power and the control signal, so no separate power supply is needed outdoors.

    Practical application

If in an underground car park the extract fan speed has to be increased as humidity rises, then the OCTHM-R (IP65) is connected with a single RJ45 cable to a Sentera PoM controller, which reads the 0–100 % control signal over Modbus RTU.

Application guide: how it is used in practice

The same OCTHM-R adapts to different sites – only what is connected to its output changes:

Site What is connected Result Installer's note
Sentera Modbus controller or EC fan RJ45 → Modbus RTU line with PoM The fan is controlled by a signal calculated by the sensor Check that the device supplies PoM power
Building with BMS RJ45 → Modbus RTU The BMS reads T, rH and the control signal A separate address for each sensor
Remote monitoring Modbus RTU → Sentera internet gateway → SenteraWeb Remote settings changes and warnings A Sentera internet gateway is required
Underground car park Installed on the landing, RJ45 → Modbus Ventilation is boosted as humidity or temperature rises Point the cable entry downwards

How to choose a temperature and humidity transmitter for outdoor conditions

Installation location / function Recommended model
Outdoors / humid environment, measurement data to BMS via Modbus RTU, PoM ODTHM (outdoor sensor, IP65)
Outdoors, control signal based on T and rH via Modbus RTU, PoM OCTHM-R (smart outdoor sensor, IP65) ← this model
In the duct DSTH-3 / DSTHM-2 or DCTH-2 series (see duct models)
In the room on the wall RSTH-3 / RSTHM-2 or RCTH-2 series
Rule: first decide where the measurement is made (duct, room, outdoors), then what you need from the transmitter: separate analog signals for a controller (transmitter, 3 outputs), data only to a BMS (Modbus / PoM version), or direct fan control with a single output (smart sensor). Finally – the supply and number of wires: -F – 24 VDC, 4-wire, separate grounds; -G – AC or DC, 3-wire, common ground; -M / -H – power over the Modbus cable (RJ45).
When to choose another solution: for outdoor measurement only – ODTHM; for a duct – DCTH-2 series; for a room – RCTH-2 series.

    Pros

    • Transmitter and controller in one
    • Control by T, rH or both
    • Accuracy ±0.4 °C, ±3 % rH
    • Modbus RTU, firmware updated over the network
    • Power and communication via a single RJ45 cable
    • IP65 enclosure

    Cons / limitations

    • Only one control signal based on T and rH
    • No analog output – a Modbus RTU device and PoM supply are required
    • Ranges and logic are set via Modbus RTU only

    Safety and installation notes

    • Installation and connection are to be carried out by a qualified electrician / automation specialist with the power disconnected.
    • Supply voltage – 24 VDC via Modbus (PoM), RJ45.
    • Do not connect the RJ45 connector to computer network (Ethernet) equipment – it carries 24 VDC PoM power.
    • Resetting the Modbus communication parameters – with a jumper on PROG pins 1 and 2 for at least 10 s.
    • Install so that the cable entry points downwards.

    Quick selection guide

    -30…+70 °C
    0–100 % rH
    PoM / RJ45
    Modbus RTU
    24 VDC via Modbus
    IP65
    Suitable when you need:
    • to control a fan or damper according to temperature and humidity outdoors or in a damp environment without a separate controller;
    • to implement demand-controlled ventilation in damp rooms;
    • to integrate the control into a BMS later via Modbus RTU.
    Check before use:
    • whether the controlled device or BMS supports Modbus RTU;
    • the supply: 24 VDC via Modbus (PoM), RJ45;
    • whether separate T and rH signals are needed – then choose a transmitter.
Important reminder: The OCTHM-R generates a single control signal based on T and rH; it does not replace the power section of a fan speed controller.
