  • Stork nest platform | artificial nesting platform for storks | mounted on a power pole, pole or roof | kit | GL-2

    Code: Gandralizdis GL-2

    The GL-2 stork nest platform is a ready-to-install artificial nesting kit for white storks: a metal frame with a nest base, a bracket and fixing hardware. It is designed for mounting on an overhead power line pole, a standalone pole, a building roof or a tree, so that storks have a safe, stable nesting spot set apart from the electricity network.

  • Stork nest platform | artificial nesting platform for storks | mounted on a power pole, pole or roof | kit | GL-2

    Key idea:
    Storks return to the same site year after year, and they most often choose power poles. A nest built directly on wires or insulators means short circuits, power outages and dead birds. The GL-2 lets the storks stay where they are used to, but on a purpose-built base that carries the weight of the nest and keeps it clear of the conductors.
    Base diameter
    approx. 1.0–1.2 m
    Construction
    metal frame, galvanised / painted
    Mounting
    on a pole, power pole, roof or tree
    Kit contents
    frame, bracket, fixing hardware

    How it works

    The nesting platform is mounted high up, in an open location, either where storks are already nesting or where you want to attract them. The frame is fixed to the pole or power pole with a bracket, and a layer of branches, straw and turf – a "starter nest" – is placed on the base for the birds to begin building on.

    Storks that find a stable, already-started nest take it over and add to it every year. On a power pole, the nest then sits above the wires and insulators, held clear of them by the frame and the height of the bracket, so rain-soaked branches no longer reach live parts.

    What makes the GL-2 worthwhile?
    It is a solution that protects the power network from faults while letting storks live in their usual spot. For network operators, municipalities and homestead owners, it costs less than clearing nests off poles every year or repairing a damaged line.

    Recommended height At least 5–6 m above ground

    Key features

    • Safe distance from conductors – the bracket raises the nest above the insulators and wires, reducing the risk of a short circuit.
    • Stable base – the metal frame carries a nest weighing several hundred kilograms once it has grown over the years.
    • Universal mounting – suits round and reinforced-concrete poles, roof structures and trees alike.
    • Simple installation – the kit is ready for assembly; all you need is a lift or ladder and standard tools.
    • Long service life – the corrosion-protected metal lasts for decades with no maintenance.

    Where is it used?

    • Overhead line poles of electricity distribution networks where storks already nest
    • Standalone poles at homesteads and rural farmsteads
    • Roofs of farm buildings, sheds and warehouses
    • Municipal and local authority environmental projects
    • Protected areas, regional parks, ornithological programmes
    • Edges of water bodies, meadows and fields
    • Sites where a nest has been removed from a hazardous pole

    Use by need

    For a homestead owner.
    You want storks near the house, but not on your service pole – put up a standalone pole fitted with the GL-2, 20–30 m away from the lines.
    For network operators / electricians.
    Moving a nest off the wires onto a GL-2 bracket is a one-off job, in place of clearing the nest every year and dealing with emergency call-outs.
    For municipalities and environmental organisations.
    A standardised kit allows several nesting-platform projects to be planned with the same installation process and budget.

    Practical example

    If storks have been nesting on a service pole for several years and power goes out during a rainy summer, agree with the network operator to move the nest onto a GL-2 bracket on the same pole, or onto a new standalone pole nearby. The birds return to their usual spot, and the line stays clear.

    Pros

    • Protects the power network – fewer short circuits and faults during nesting season.
    • Protects the birds – storks no longer touch the wires when landing or taking off.
    • Ready-made kit – no need to design and weld your own structure.
    • Fits different pole types – a universal bracket.
    • Maintenance-free – the metal frame does not soak through or rot.
    • Clear environmental outcome – suits reports and project documentation.

    Cons / limitations

    • Mounting on a power pole requires the network operator's permission and a supply disconnection – this cannot be done independently.
    • A lift or working-at-height equipment is required – the kit does not install itself.
    • Nest filling material (branches, straw) is not included in the kit.
    • Storks may choose a different spot – the platform increases the odds, but does not guarantee occupancy.

    Safety and installation notes

    • Mounting on a live power line pole must only be carried out by the network operator or its authorised contractor, after the supply has been disconnected.
    • Choose a pole or power pole that can carry an additional 200–500 kg load plus wind moment.
    • The nest base must be level; tighten the bracket according to the instructions and check the bolts after one year.
    • Install in autumn–winter, once the storks have migrated; add the branch starter nest in spring.
    • Erecting a separate standalone pole is the safest option where a power line runs nearby.

    Quick selection guide

    Base diameter
    approx. 1.0–1.2 m
    Construction
    metal frame, galvanised / painted
    Mounting
    on a pole, power pole, roof or tree
    Kit contents
    frame, bracket, fixing hardware
    Suitable when you need:
    • to move a stork nest off power lines onto a safe base;
    • to attract storks to a homestead or protected area;
    • a standard kit for an environmental project.
    Check before use:
    • whether you have the network operator's permission (if mounting on a power pole);
    • whether the pole can carry the weight of the nest;
    • whether you have a lift and the fixing tools;
    • whether the installation timing falls outside the migration season.
    Important reminder:
    The stork nest platform does not replace power line protection measures (insulated conductors, bird deterrents) – it only moves the nest to a safer location. The nest base is never mounted directly on the wires or insulators themselves.

    FAQ

    Can I install the GL-2 on a power pole near my house myself?
    No – mounting on a network operator's pole may only be done by the operator or an authorised contractor. On your own pole or roof – yes.
    Is the nest filling material included in the kit?
    No, branches and straw are added on site.
    How tall a pole do I need?
    At least 5–6 m is recommended, in an open location.
    Will storks really move in?
    The odds are good if the site has been used before or other nests are nearby, but there is no guarantee.
    Does it need yearly maintenance?
    It's enough to check the fixings after the first year; an oversized nest can be trimmed back in autumn.
