Strap-on pipe temperature transmitter | 0-85°C | Modbus RTU | 24VDC PoM | RJ45 | IP65 | Sentera Controls | DTP-M
DTP-M – a Sentera Controls digital strap-on (pipe-mounted) temperature transmitter with Modbus RTU (RS485) communication. It measures water pipe temperature of 0…+85 °C with ±1 °C accuracy and is powered by 24 VDC via Modbus (PoM) through the RJ45 socket.
Key idea:
Pipe temperature without a thermowell and without breaking into the piping: the sensor is pressed against the pipe, and the temperature travels over the Modbus RTU network to the controller or BMS.Measuring range
0…+85 °C, ±1 °CCommunication
Modbus RTU (RS485)Power supply
24 VDC via Modbus (PoM), RJ45Protection
IP65, includedOperating principle
The transmitter is attached to the pipe with the supplied heat-resistant 300 × 4.8 mm cable tie; the copper plate improves heat transfer, and the thermal pad (19 × 14 × 1.5 mm) ensures good contact with the pipe surface. A cable with the 24 VDC supply and Modbus RTU signals (A, /B, GND) is connected to the RJ45 socket.
Temperature is measured within 0…+85 °C with ±1 °C accuracy and provided in Modbus registers; the left green LED shows power, and the blinking green LEDs show active Modbus communication.
Result – pipework temperature in the BMS or controller without a thermowell and without draining the system. The sensor measures the pipe wall temperature: it is close to the water temperature when the pipe is metal and the sensor location is insulated; on plastic pipes the readings are less accurate.
Benefits DTP-M?
Installation without dismantling the piping and without a thermowell, with power and data in a single RJ45 cable.Technical specifications

- Low costs – up to 0.192 W (Imax 8 mA) from the PoM line.
- LED indication – power and communication status.
- IP65 – suitable for technical rooms and heat substations.
Where is it used?
- Supply and return water monitoring of heating circuits
- Water heating coil piping in ventilation units
- Heat substations and boiler rooms
- Heat pump systems
- Hot water preparation circuits up to +85 °C
- Modernization of existing systems without dismantling the piping
- BMS pipework temperature monitoring
On-demand operation
For heating installers.
No thermowell or piping dismantling needed – the transmitter is secured with a cable tie.For heat pump installers.
Two DTP-M units on the supply and return pipes give the temperature difference in the Modbus network.For building energy managers.
Pipework temperatures in the BMS help evaluate the efficiency of heating circuits.Practical application
If the return water temperature of a running heating circuit has to be added to the BMS without draining the water, then the DTP-M is clamped with a cable tie to the metal pipe, the spot is insulated, and the 0…+85 °C temperature is passed over the Modbus RTU network with ±1 °C accuracy.Application guide: how it is used in practice
The DTP-M is placed on the pipe, and the temperature travels over the Modbus RTU network:
Site What is connected Result Installer's note Water heating coil DTP-M on the return water pipe → Modbus The controller monitors the return water temperature Insulate the transmitter location Heating circuit DTP-M on the supply pipe → DPOM8-24-20 → BMS Supply water temperature in the BMS Metal pipe – more accurate readings Heat pump Two DTP-M on the supply and return pipe Temperature difference for evaluating system efficiency Different Modbus addresses Retrofit without dismantling DTP-M instead of an immersion sensor No need to drain the water or install a thermowell Clean the pipe surface How to choose a Modbus temperature transmitter

- Installation without a thermowell and without dismantling the piping
- Modbus RTU
- 24 VDC Power over Modbus
- RJ45 connector
- IP65
- Series resistor and thermal pad included
Cons / limitations
- Accuracy ±1 °C
- Measures the pipe surface temperature, not the water temperature directly
- No analog output – a Modbus controller is required; for a controller with a PT input choose the FLTSN series with a thermowell
- Range up to +85 °C
- A 24 VDC Modbus power supply is required – the DPOM8-24-20 is intended for this
Safety and installation notes
- Installation and connection are to be carried out by a qualified installer with the power disconnected.
- Power supply 24 VDC only, via Modbus.
- Do not exceed a pipe temperature of +85 °C.
- Keep the cable away from hot surfaces.
Quick selection guide
Modbus RTU24 VDC PoMRJ450…+85 °CIP65Suitable when you need:- to measure water pipe temperature on a Modbus RTU network;
- to install a sensor without a thermowell;
- to reduce the number of wires with Power over Modbus.
Check before use:- whether the pipe temperature does not exceed +85 °C;
- whether there is a Modbus RTU controller and 24 VDC PoM power;
- the pipe material (metal – more accurate readings).
Important reminder: The DTP-M has no PT or 0-10 VDC output – it works only on a Modbus RTU network.FAQ
Is a thermowell needed?
No, the transmitter is attached to the pipe surface and secured with a cable tie.What is the measuring range?
The transmitter measures 0…+85 °C with ±1 °C accuracy.How is the transmitter powered?
It is powered at 24 VDC over Modbus (PoM) via the RJ45 socket.Can it be used in a duct?
No, for ducts the DTS-M-080 and DTS-M-160 are intended.Is it suitable for a plastic pipe?
Suitable, but the readings will be less accurate than on a metal pipe.Does the measuring point need to be insulated?
Yes, an insulated location gives readings closer to the true water temperature.Strap-on pipe temperature transmitter | 0-85°C | Modbus RTU | 24VDC PoM | RJ45 | IP65 | Sentera Controls | DTP-M
