  • Triac fan speed controller | Modbus RTU | 1.5A | 230VAC | surface-mounted/flush-mounted | Sentera Controls | SDX-1-15-DM

SDX-1-15-DM – Sentera Controls electronic speed controller with a knob and Modbus RTU communication for single-phase voltage-controllable AC fans up to 1.5 A. Surface-mounted (IP54) or flush-mounted (IP44) – like a standard wall switch.

    Key idea:
Knob in the room for people, Modbus RTU for the system. Speed can be set manually, while via Modbus you can restrict the limits, change the direction or disable manual control completely.
    What it is for SDX-1-15-DM:
This model is designed for low-power fans (up to 1.5 A) – one or two duct or axial fans in an office, bathroom, kitchen or small room.
    Motor current
    0.1–1.5 A
    Control
    Knob / Modbus RTU
    Power supply
    230 VAC ±10 %, 50–60 Hz
    Installation
    Surface-mounted IP54 / flush-mounted IP44

    Operating principle

The controller is mounted on a wall or in a flush-mounted box. Connect the power supply (L, N), the motor (U1, U2) and, if required, the Modbus RTU line (A, B).

Phase-angle control: the effective value of the motor supply voltage is varied, so the output voltage is not purely sinusoidal. Us – supply voltage (230 VAC).

Speed is set with the integrated knob between the min. (20–70 % Us) and max. (75–100 % Us) limits. Via Modbus RTU you can change the limits, the knob direction (min.→max. or max.→min.) and the start-up mode, disable the knob and control the speed remotely.

Result – the fan runs at exactly the speed required and consumes less electricity than when running continuously at full speed. Engineer's note: with an AC induction motor, reducing the voltage increases slip and rotor losses, so the savings are lower than with an EC fan or a frequency inverter. When energy efficiency is the top priority, choose an EC fan; when completely silent operation at low speed is essential, choose a transformer controller with a sinusoidal output voltage.

    Benefits SDX-1-15-DM?
A compact wall-mounted controller that is both a convenient manual controller and a Modbus device – suitable where a knob is needed in the room, but the BMS must monitor and limit the settings.

Original manufacturer documentation – technical data, wiring diagrams and installation instructions.

    Main functions

    • Knob – simple speed setting directly in the room.
    • Modbus RTU – speed, limits and status are controlled from the BMS; manual control can be disabled.
    • Adjustable limits – the min. limit ensures that the motor always starts; the max. limit restricts speed and noise.
    • Selectable direction – the knob can increase or decrease the speed – as is customary on site.
    • Soft / fast start – smooth or reliable motor start-up.
    • Installation – surface-mounted or in a flush-mounted box.
    • SenteraWeb – via the Sentera internet module, the controller can be connected to the SenteraWeb cloud – remote control, monitoring and alerts via the internet.

    Where is it used?

    • Offices, meeting rooms, hotel rooms
    • Bathroom and kitchen extraction
    • Small workshops, storerooms
    • Buildings with BMS where manual control is needed in the room
    • Replacement of old wall-mounted controllers

    On-demand operation

    For the electrician.
Installed like a standard wall switch – surface-mounted or flush-mounted.
    For the BMS integrator.
Via Modbus, manual control can be limited or overridden and the status monitored.
    For the room user.
Simple knob for setting the speed.

Application guide: how it is used in practice

    Typical SDX-1-15-DM applications:

Site What is connected Result Installer's note
Office, meeting room Fan → U1, U2 Speed is set by the room user with the knob Set the min. limit so that the motor always starts
Hotel, office building with BMS Modbus RTU → A, B BMS monitors the status and limits the settings in each room A separate address for each controller
Centralised control Modbus RTU, knob disabled Speed is set only by the BMS; the user cannot change it The knob can be disabled via Modbus
Extraction in a bathroom or kitchen Duct or axial fan → U1, U2 Quiet operation at low speed, full speed when needed Check that the motor is suitable for voltage control

How to select the controller current

Rated current of the motor(s) Recommended model
    up to 1.5 A SDX-1-15-DM (1.5 A) ← this model
    1.5–2.5 A SDX-1-25-DM (2.5 A)
Rule: controller max. current ≥ motor rated current (see the motor nameplate). The starting current is already accounted for by the manufacturer; no additional margin is needed. When connecting several fans – motors of the same type – add up their rated currents. For higher currents or automation with 0-10 VDC, choose the EVS-1 series.
When to choose another solution: sensor (0-10 VDC) control needed – EVS-1 series; no Modbus needed – SDX-1-DT (knob with switch); for an EC fan – an EC potentiometer; for a three-phase motor – a three-phase transformer controller.

    Pros

    • Knob and Modbus RTU in one
    • Manual control can be disabled via Modbus
    • Adjustable limits and direction
    • Surface or flush mounting
    • Overheating protection
    • Compact

    Cons / limitations

    • Low power – motor current up to 1.5 A
    • No analogue 0-10 VDC input
    • No unregulated L1 output
    • Only for single-phase voltage-controllable motors; not suitable for EC fans
    • The output voltage is non-sinusoidal – some motors may hum audibly at low speed

    Safety and installation notes

    • Installation and connection must be carried out by a qualified electrician with the power disconnected.
    • Install the product so that the terminals and seals are at the bottom.
    • Check that the motor is suitable for voltage control and that its current is within 0.1–1.5 A.
    • Intended for indoor use only (0…+40 °C).

    Quick selection guide

    1.5 A
    230 VAC
    Knob
    Modbus RTU
    IP54 / IP44
    Suitable when you need:
    • a knob is required in the room;
    • BMS needs to monitor or limit the settings;
    • fan current – up to 1.5 A.
    Check before use:
    • the motor current and whether it is voltage-controllable;
    • the mounting method (surface-mounted or flush-mounted);
    • whether Modbus is required – if not, SDX-1-DT is sufficient.
Important reminder: SDX-1-15-DM does not control EC fans or three-phase motors.
