Rotary paddle level switch for bulk materials with protective shaft tube – a 230VAC electromechanical point level sensor designed for grain, feed, cement, pellets, powders and other bulk materials. The SUS304 stainless steel paddle rotates at approximately 1 rpm, and when stopped by the material, an SPDT 5A / 250VAC contact switches. The extended sensor section with a Φ28mm protective shaft tube helps reduce mechanical stress on the shaft, while the IP65 enclosure is suitable for industrial environments. It can be used for high-level or low-level control in hoppers, silos and process vessels.

  • Rotary paddle level switch for bulk materials | with protective shaft tube | 230VAC | SPDT 5A | IP65

Rotary paddle level switch for bulk materials with protective shaft tube – an electromechanical point level control device designed for grain, animal feed, cement, pellets, powders and other bulk materials in tanks, hoppers, silos and process equipment. This version features a Φ28mm protective tube around the extended shaft section, helping to protect the shaft from direct contact with bulk material and additional mechanical loads. A synchronous motor rotates the SUS304 stainless steel paddle at approximately 1 rpm. When the material reaches the paddle and stops its rotation, the internal mechanism switches the SPDT 5A / 250VAC microswitch contact.

    Version with protective shaft tube

The main difference between this model and the standard version is the extended sensor section with a Φ28mm protective tube. The tube covers most of the shaft, leaving only the lower shaft section and paddle exposed. This construction helps reduce direct contact between the bulk material and the shaft and is suitable for installations where a longer sensor section is required.

    Operating principle

    Condition Paddle operation Output response
No material present The synchronous motor rotates the paddle at approximately 1 rpm. The switch remains in its normal state.
Material reaches the paddle The bulk material creates mechanical resistance and stops the paddle from rotating. The internal mechanism switches the SPDT microswitch contact.
Material level drops The paddle is released and can rotate freely again. The mechanism returns to its initial contact state.

How does the rotary paddle level switch work?

    1. The switch is installed at the selected point in a tank, hopper or silo.
    2. The extended sensor section is inserted into the monitored area of the tank, while the protective tube covers the main part of the shaft.
    3. When 230VAC power is connected, the synchronous motor starts rotating the SUS304 paddle.
    4. As long as there is no bulk material around the paddle, it rotates at approximately 1 rpm.
    5. When the material level rises to the paddle, its rotation is mechanically stopped.
    6. The internal mechanism detects the resistance and switches the SPDT contact.
    7. The contact signal can be transmitted to a PLC, relay, alarm system or other control equipment.
    8. When the material level drops and the paddle is released, the switch returns to its initial state.
Protective tube protects the shaft section

The Φ28mm protective tube covers the extended shaft section and reduces its direct contact with the bulk material. This is particularly useful when the switch is installed deeper inside the tank or in locations where a long unprotected shaft would be more exposed to material weight, movement or lateral mechanical loads.

    SPDT contact for automation systems

The integrated microswitch has an SPDT changeover contact with an electrical rating of up to 5A / 250VAC. The contact signal can be transmitted to a PLC, interposing relay, contactor, visual or audible alarm and other compatible control equipment.

    Industrial applications

For grain, animal feed, cement, pellets and other bulk materials

The rotary paddle level switch with protective shaft tube can be used in production, storage and processing systems where it is necessary to detect whether bulk material has reached a specific level. The extended design is particularly useful where the paddle needs to extend deeper into a hopper, silo or other process vessel.

    Advantages

    • Φ28mm protective shaft tube covers and protects the main section of the extended shaft.
    • 250mm sensor section allows the paddle to extend deeper into the monitored vessel.
    • Simple electromechanical operating principle is designed for point level detection of bulk materials.
    • SPDT 5A / 250VAC contact allows the signal to be transmitted to a control or alarm system.
    • SUS304 stainless steel paddle is designed for direct contact with bulk material.
    • 1 rpm rotation speed is intended for mechanical detection of material presence.
    • IP65 protection rating protects the housing against dust and water jets.
    • M20x1.5 cable entry is intended for electrical connection.
    • -20°C to +80°C operating temperature is suitable for typical industrial conditions.
    • 3W power consumption is required to drive the paddle.

    Disadvantages / limitations

    • Designed for point level rather than continuous level measurement: the switch detects material at one specific point but does not measure the overall fill level.
    • The paddle must contact the material: the operating principle is based on physically stopping the paddle.
    • Not suitable for liquid level measurement: the construction is designed for bulk materials.
    • Standard temperature version: processes above +80°C require a model designed for high-temperature operation.
    • Standard pressure version: pressure vessels require a separate high-pressure version.
    • The longer construction requires more space: the 250mm sensor section length must be taken into account before installation.
    • The protective tube does not protect the paddle itself: the lower moving section must still be protected from strong direct impact from falling material.

    • Installation where the paddle cannot rotate freely
    • Explosive Ex zones unless the specific version has the required certification

    Practical application example

In a grain hopper, the point level switch must be installed so that the paddle is positioned farther away from the hopper wall and reaches the internal material zone. For this purpose, a version with an extended 250mm sensor section and a Φ28mm protective shaft tube is used. As long as the grain does not reach the paddle, the 230VAC motor rotates it at approximately 1 rpm. When the grain rises to the paddle, it stops rotating, the SPDT contact switches, and the signal is transmitted to the controller, which can stop material feeding or activate a full-tank alarm.

    Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

How does this version differ from the standard version?

The main difference is the extended sensor construction with a Φ28mm protective tube covering the main section of the shaft. According to the drawing, the sensor section length from the mounting plane is approximately 250mm.

What is the protective shaft tube used for?

It covers the extended shaft section and helps reduce direct contact with the bulk material as well as lateral mechanical loads on the shaft.

What is the diameter of the protective tube?

According to the dimensional drawing, the outside diameter of the protective tube is Φ28mm.

    What is the shaft diameter?

    The shaft diameter is Φ10mm.

    What does this switch detect?

It detects whether bulk material has reached a specific point in the tank. It is a point level switch rather than a continuous level measuring device.

    How is bulk material detected?

The paddle rotates slowly. When the bulk material reaches it and creates mechanical resistance, rotation stops and the internal mechanism switches the SPDT contact.

    What is the supply voltage?

The switch supply voltage is 230VAC.

    What is the output signal?

An SPDT microswitch contact is used, with an electrical rating of up to 5A / 250VAC.

The enclosure protection rating is IP65.

Can it be used as a high-level switch?

Yes. When installed in the upper part of the tank, the SPDT contact can be used to stop material feeding or activate a full-tank alarm.

Can it be used as a low-level switch?

Yes. When correctly installed in the lower or side section of the tank, the change in contact state can be used to monitor the minimum material level.

Important installation and electrical safety note

The rotary paddle level switch with protective shaft tube must be installed so that the lower moving paddle can rotate freely and does not touch the tank wall or internal structures. The Φ28mm protective tube reduces mechanical load on the shaft, but the paddle must remain in a clear process area and should not be continuously exposed to a strong stream of directly falling material. Electrical 230VAC connection work must be carried out by a qualified specialist with the power supply disconnected before work begins. The SPDT contact rating of 5A / 250VAC must not be exceeded. For high-temperature, high-pressure or explosive-environment processes, a switch version specifically designed for those conditions must be used.
