Rotary paddle level switch for bulk materials – a 230VAC electromechanical point level control device designed for grain, feed, cement, pellets and other bulk materials in tanks, hoppers and silos. The rotating SUS304 stainless steel paddle detects the material level by mechanical resistance, while the integrated SPDT 5A / 250VAC contact transmits a signal to a control or alarm system. The housing has an IP65 protection rating, the process connection is G1", and the paddle rotation speed is approximately 1 rpm.

  • Rotary paddle level switch for bulk materials | 230VAC | SPDT 5A | IP65

Rotary paddle level switch – an electromechanical point level control device designed for bulk materials in tanks, hoppers, silos and process equipment. A synchronous motor rotates the stainless steel paddle at approximately 1 rpm. As long as the material does not contact the paddle, it rotates freely. When the material reaches the paddle and creates mechanical resistance, rotation stops and the internal mechanism switches the SPDT microswitch contact, which can be used for signalling, control or process automation.

Point level control for bulk materials

The switch is suitable for level control of grain, animal feed, cement, plastics, chemical fibres and other bulk products. It can be used as a high-level or low-level sensor, depending on the mounting position and control circuit.

    Operating principle

    Condition Paddle operation Output response
No material present The synchronous motor rotates the paddle at approximately 1 rpm. The switch remains in its normal state.
Material reaches the paddle The bulk material creates resistance and stops the paddle from rotating. The internal mechanism switches the microswitch contact.
Material level drops The paddle can rotate freely again. The mechanism returns to its initial contact state.

How does a rotary level switch work?

    1. The switch is installed at the selected location in a tank, hopper or silo.
    2. When 230VAC power is connected, the synchronous motor begins rotating the paddle.
    3. As long as there is no bulk material around the paddle, it rotates freely.
    4. When the material level rises to the paddle, the paddle is mechanically stopped.
    5. The internal mechanism detects the resistance to rotation and switches the SPDT microswitch contact.
    6. The contact signal is transmitted to a controller, relay, alarm system or another control circuit.
    7. When the material level drops and the paddle is released, the mechanism returns to its initial state.
Designed for bulk solids, not liquid level measurement

The operating principle of the rotary paddle switch is based on the mechanical resistance created by bulk material against the rotating paddle. Therefore, this principle is intended for grain, pellets, powders and other bulk materials rather than conventional liquid level measurement.

    SPDT contact for control systems

The integrated microswitch provides an SPDT changeover contact with an electrical rating of up to 5A / 250VAC. The contact can be used to transmit a point level signal to a PLC, contactor, interposing relay, visual or audible alarm system, or other compatible control equipment.

    Industrial applications

For grain, animal feed, cement, plastic pellets and other bulk materials

The rotary level switch can be used in various manufacturing and processing systems where it is necessary to detect whether bulk material has reached a specific point in a tank. The device is suitable for process hoppers, silos, storage tanks and dosing systems.

    Advantages

    • Simple electromechanical operating principle does not require complex measurement of material parameters.
    • SPDT 5A / 250VAC contact allows convenient transmission of the point-level signal to a control circuit.
    • SUS304 stainless steel paddle is designed for direct contact with bulk material.
    • IP65 enclosure protects the internal components against dust and water jets in accordance with the IP65 protection rating.
    • G1" process connection enables convenient installation into the tank structure.
    • M20x1.5 cable entry is provided for electrical connection.
    • -20°C to +80°C operating temperature allows use in various industrial environments.
    • Low 3W power consumption is required to drive the paddle.

    Disadvantages / limitations

    • Designed for point level rather than continuous level measurement: the switch provides a contact signal when a specific level is reached, but does not measure the exact material height.
    • Mechanical contact with the material: the paddle must physically contact the monitored bulk material.
    • Not suitable for conventional liquid level measurement: the operating principle is based on bulk material stopping the rotating paddle.
    • Normal operating pressure: the product is not intended for pressurised vessels unless separately approved by the manufacturer.
    • Installation location is important: a strong directly falling material stream may create additional mechanical load on the paddle.
    • Clearance is required for paddle rotation: there must be no mechanical obstructions around the paddle.

    Suitable for

    • Grain silos and storage hoppers
    • Animal feed production and storage equipment
    • Cement and other bulk construction material tanks
    • Plastic pellet tanks and plastics processing equipment
    • Chemical fibre and other bulk raw material processes
    • Powder and granule storage tanks
    • High-level alarm applications
    • Low-level alarm applications
    • Automation of conveyor, dosing and filling systems

    Not suitable for

    • Continuous level measurement in metres, centimetres or percentages
    • Conventional liquid level measurement
    • Pressurised vessels without additional technical approval
    • Installation where the paddle cannot rotate freely
    • Use outside the -20°C ~ +80°C operating temperature range

    Practical application example

In a grain hopper, the level switch is installed at the maximum permitted filling level. As long as the grain does not reach the paddle, the 230VAC synchronous motor rotates it at approximately 1 rpm. When the hopper becomes full, the grain surrounds the paddle and stops its rotation. The internal mechanism switches the SPDT contact, and this signal can be transmitted to a controller that stops the conveyor or activates a full-tank alarm.

    Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

    What does this switch measure?

It is designed to detect whether bulk material has reached a specific location in a tank. It is a point level switch rather than a continuous level transmitter.

How does it detect the material?

Under normal conditions, the paddle rotates. When bulk material surrounds it and creates sufficient mechanical resistance, the paddle stops and the internal mechanism switches the signal contact.

    What is the supply voltage?

The switch supply voltage is 230VAC.

    What is the output signal?

An SPDT microswitch contact is used, with an electrical rating of up to 5A / 250VAC.

How fast does the paddle rotate?

The paddle rotation speed is approximately 1 rpm.

What is the paddle made of?

The paddle is made of SUS304 stainless steel.

Can it be used in a grain silo?

Yes. Rotary paddle level switches are designed for point level control of grain, animal feed and other bulk products.

Can it be used in a cement tank?

Yes, provided that the specific process conditions, temperature, pressure and material properties are within the technical specifications of the device.

    Can it measure liquid level?

This model is designed for bulk materials. For liquids, float, electrode, hydrostatic, ultrasonic or radar level sensors are generally used.

    What is the process connection?

According to the dimensional drawing, a G1" process connection is used.

    What is the cable entry?

The electrical cable entry is M20x1.5.

    What is the protection rating?

The enclosure protection rating is IP65.

Important installation and electrical safety note

The rotary paddle level switch must be installed so that the paddle can rotate freely and is not continuously exposed to a direct, heavy stream of falling material. The process connection, mechanical mounting and cable entry must be installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s requirements. Electrical 230VAC connection work must be carried out by a qualified specialist with the power supply disconnected before work begins. The 5A / 250VAC SPDT contact rating must not be exceeded. When switching inductive loads, contactors or higher-power equipment, the use of a suitable interposing control circuit is recommended.
