The black single-rocker intermediate surface-mounted switch is designed to control one lighting circuit from three or more locations. Its surface-mounted installation, round shape, and retro-style design make it easy to use in exposed electrical installations, wooden houses, country homes, lofts, and vintage interiors. The switch is made of heat-resistant thermoplastic, with a rated specification of 10AX, 250 V AC and an IP20 protection rating.

  • Black single-key intermediate surface-mounted switch – retro style, 10AX, 250 V, IP20

Single-key intermediate surface-mounted switch is intended for lighting control circuits where the same lighting circuit needs to be controlled from three or more locations. In such a circuit, the intermediate switch is installed between two two-way switches and allows one or more additional control points to be added.

The switch is surface-mounted, so it is installed on the wall surface and is particularly suitable for exposed electrical installations. The classic round shape and black colour suit retro, loft, vintage and historically styled interiors.

The housing is made of heat-resistant thermoplastic. Switch dimensions: 62 mm diameter and 47 mm height. Electrical parameters – 10AX, 250 V AC, protection rating – IP20.

    For control from multiple locations:
An intermediate switch is used when one lighting circuit needs to be switched on and off from three or more different locations. It is used together with two-way switches, not as a standalone standard single-pole switch.
    Purpose of the intermediate switch:
This type of switch reverses the connection path of two intermediate conductors, allowing the control circuit to continue between two two-way switches. In practice, it is used in corridors, staircases, large rooms and other locations where it is convenient to control the same lighting from several points.
    Important:
An intermediate switch is not the same as a standard switch or a two-way switch. A typical three-location control circuit requires two two-way switches and one intermediate switch. If more control locations are required, additional intermediate switches can be installed between the two-way switches.
    For dry indoor areas:
The IP20 protection rating does not provide protection against water, so the switch is not suitable for direct outdoor installation or locations exposed to water, steam or condensation.

    What is an intermediate switch?

An intermediate switch is a special electrical installation control device used when one lighting circuit needs to be controlled from more than two locations.

It is normally installed between two two-way switches. The two-way switches are used at the beginning and end of the circuit, while the intermediate switch is installed between them.

    Typical three-location control:
    1. A two-way switch is installed at the first location.
    2. An intermediate switch is installed at the second location.
    3. A second two-way switch is installed at the third location.

If four, five or more control locations are required, additional intermediate switches can be installed between the two end two-way switches.

    Important technical difference:
An intermediate switch cannot simply be replaced with a standard on/off switch. Its internal contact function is different and is specifically intended for intermediate control points.

    Single-key design

The switch has one key, which changes the state of the intermediate contact arrangement. One key controls one intended lighting circuit.

Pressing the key changes the contact position. The final on/off state of the luminaire also depends on the positions of the other switches in the same switching circuit.

Where is an intermediate switch used?

    For long corridors
When it is convenient to control the lighting from several different points along a corridor.
    For staircases
For controlling lighting from different floors or intermediate landings.
    For large rooms
When one lighting circuit needs to be controlled from several entrances.
    For bedrooms
When lighting is controlled from the entrance and additional points beside the bed.
    For hotels
For multi-point lighting control circuits in corridors and rooms.
    For residential spaces
When it is convenient to control one lighting circuit from three or more locations.

    Surface-mounted installation

The switch is surface-mounted, so it is installed directly on a wall or other suitable surface. This solution is often chosen for exposed retro-style electrical installations.

Surface-mounted installation is particularly suitable for wooden houses, country homes, restored buildings, lofts and other locations where a standard flush-mounted installation box cannot or should not be recessed into the wall.

    Mounting surface:
The switch must be securely fixed to a stable surface. Fasteners should be selected according to the specific wall material.

    Retro and loft-style design

The round shape and surface-mounted installation give the switch the appearance of a classic exposed electrical installation. It can therefore serve not only as a functional control element but also as a visible interior detail.

The black housing can be combined with light or dark walls, wood finishes, brickwork, decorative plaster, classic interiors and vintage-style luminaires.

    For a consistent style:
    • Combine with black surface-mounted sockets and switches.
    • Use frames of the same style.
    • Decorative cable insulators can be used in exposed retro installations.
    • Coordinate with the colours of walls, furniture and luminaires.
    • Maintain a consistent switch mounting height throughout the room.

    For restored and vintage interiors

The switch can be used in restored country homes, manor-house interiors, wooden houses and other historically styled spaces where the appearance of classic electrical installations is to be preserved.

It is also suitable for modern lofts and industrial interiors where the electrical installation is intentionally left visible.

    Heat-resistant thermoplastic housing

The switch housing is made of thermoplastic, a heat-resistant plastic.

When installing the plastic housing, excessive mechanical force and overtightening of fasteners should be avoided.

    IP20 protection rating

IP20 protection rating means that the switch is intended for use in dry indoor areas and is not protected against water ingress.

IP20 is not suitable for wet areas:
Based on the stated parameters, the switch should not be considered suitable for outdoor or wet-area installation. A correspondingly higher IP protection rating is required in such locations.

    Ø62 × 47 mm dimensions

The switch housing diameter is 62 mm, while the height from the mounting surface is 47 mm.

Before installation, sufficient space must be provided for the switch itself, cable entry and safe terminal connection.

    Installation principle

    1. Design the control circuit. Determine from how many locations the same lighting circuit will be controlled.
    2. Select the two-way switches. Compatible two-way switches are used at the beginning and end of the control circuit.
    3. Install an intermediate switch between them. For three-location control, one intermediate switch is normally used.
    4. If more control locations are required, additional intermediate switches are installed between the two end two-way switches.
    5. Disconnect the power before installation.
    6. Follow the contact markings. Connect the conductors according to the terminal diagram of the specific switch.
    7. Secure the switch to the wall. Do not overtighten the plastic housing fasteners.
    8. Check all control points. After installation, the lighting should be controllable from every intended location.
    Electrical safety:
Installation and connection work on 250 V AC electrical systems must be carried out by a qualified specialist. The intermediate switching circuit must be wired according to the contact markings of the specific switches.
