Copper busbar | 40 × 10 mm | 4 m | Elsp Group | ESV40X10
Rigid flat electrolytic copper busbar 40 × 10 mm, 4 m length. For L1–L3, N and PE main bars in distribution boards, transformer substations, UPS, battery and solar DC systems.
Key point:
Cross-section – 400 mm². Indicative continuous current rating per DIN 43671 – 715 A (one bare bar per phase, AC, ambient +35 °C, busbar temperature +65 °C). In a closed enclosure the rating is lower, for a painted bar higher, so the final size is confirmed by the switchboard designer.Cross-section

4 mHow it works
The busbar is fixed in the switchboard on insulated supports and connected to device terminals, switch-disconnectors and other bars by bolted joints. Before jointing, contact surfaces are cleaned to bare metal and coated with contact compound.
The flat 40 × 10 mm profile has a large cooling surface, so the bar dissipates heat well and carries high current at low resistance – about 43.1 µΩ/m at 20 °C.
With the right size and quality joints, the main bar runs without overheating, and losses and voltage drop at the joints stay minimal.
Why choose a 40 × 10 mm busbar?
It distributes up to 715 A through a single rigid conductor: no cable bundles, neat bolted tap-offs and a clear phase layout in the switchboard.Technical specifications

DIN 43671 conditions: bare busbar, AC, ambient +35 °C, busbar +65 °C.Key functions
- Main bar – L1–L3, N and PE bars in the switchboard with a single rigid conductor.
- Low resistance – about 43.1 µΩ/m, so lower losses and voltage drop.
- Neat tap-offs – devices are bolted directly to the bar.
- Earthing bar – main earthing or equipotential bonding bar.
- Workable on site – the bar can be cut, drilled and bent to suit the switchboard.
How does it differ from similar busbars?
- 30 × 10 mm – smaller cross-section – 573 A, for lower loads.
- 50 × 10 mm – larger cross-section – 852 A, for higher loads or closed enclosures.
- Aluminium busbar – lighter and cheaper, but needs ~1.6 times the cross-section for the same resistance, plus Cu–Al transition joints.
- Flexible busbar – for short connections between devices and vibration compensation; a rigid bar is for main bars.
Where is it used?
- Distribution boards and MCCs – phase, N and PE main bars.
- Transformer substations – 0.4 kV side connections and incomers to LV switchboards.
- UPS and battery systems – DC bars where current is high and voltage low.
- Solar plants – main bars in AC and DC boards.
- Earthing – main earthing bar, equipotential bonding.
- Industrial equipment – power connections in control and distribution cabinets.
Use by need
Switchboard builder.
Uniform main bars for phases, N and PE – clear design and fast assembly.Power engineer and contractor.
Substation 0.4 kV side and main board connections with a known current rating.UPS and battery integrator.
Low resistance in the DC bar – less voltage drop and heating.Practical use
If the switchboard needs a main bar with a design current of up to 715 A, a 40 × 10 mm busbar is suitable per DIN 43671 in an open installation. If the enclosure is closed and warm, choose a larger cross-section or a painted bar – decide this with the designer.
Pros
- High current rating – 715 A per DIN 43671.
- Low resistance – about 43.1 µΩ/m.
- Rigid profile – holds its geometry and withstands fixing loads.
- Easy to work – can be cut, drilled and bent.
- Known weight – ~14.3 kg per bar, easy to plan transport and installation.
Cons / limitations
- Bare bar – requires insulated supports, clearances and protective covers.
- Copper is heavier and costlier than aluminium – consider aluminium for long runs.
- Rating depends on conditions – lower than the table value in a closed enclosure.
- Not for vibration or movement – use flexible busbars there.
Safety and installation notes
- Before work, isolate the supply, secure it against switching on and verify that no voltage is present.
- Clean contact surfaces and apply contact compound.
- For bolted joints use class 8.8 bolts with disc spring washers, tightened to the manufacturer's torque.
- Set support spacing according to the short-circuit current.
- Connect copper to aluminium only via Cu–Al transition joints.
- Cover bare live parts; installation must be carried out by a qualified electrician.
Quick selection guide
If the switchboard needs a main bar with a design current of up to 715 A, a 40 × 10 mm busbar is suitable per DIN 43671 in an open installation. If the enclosure is closed and warm, choose a larger cross-section or a painted bar – decide this with the designer.
40 × 10 mm400 mm²715 A4 mSuitable when you need:- a main bar up to 715 A per DIN 43671;
- a phase, N or PE bar in a switchboard or substation;
- a low-resistance DC bar.
Check before use:- the design current and enclosure temperature;
- the short-circuit current and support spacing;
- device terminal width and bolt hole positions.
Important reminder: the busbar does not replace a switchboard design – current rating, clearances and short-circuit withstand are confirmed by the designer to IEC 61439.FAQ
What current can a 40 × 10 mm busbar carry?
Per DIN 43671 – 715 A (bare, AC, +35 °C); less in a closed enclosure.How much does the bar weigh?
About 3.58 kg/m, the whole 4 m bar – about 14.3 kg.How many kW can it carry?
In a three-phase 400 V system at cos φ = 1 – about 495 kW.Can it be used for DC?
Yes; resistance is about 43.1 µΩ/m, used to calculate voltage drop in a DC bar.Do two bars per phase give double the current?
No, about 1.6–1.8 times more, because parallel bars heat each other.Can the bar be cut, bent and painted?
Yes; bend only with a tool and leave contact areas unpainted.Copper busbar | 40 × 10 mm | 4 m | Elsp Group | ESV40X10
