Duct temperature sensor Ni1000 – for measuring air temperature in ducts
The Ni1000 duct sensor is installed in a ventilation or air-conditioning duct and measures the temperature of the passing air. It is a passive resistive element: its resistance changes with temperature, and the value is read by a controller, thermostat or signal converter. Ni1000 is a nickel resistance element with 1000 Ω at 0 °C. Before ordering, make sure your controller input supports Ni1000 specifically.
Key point:
Ni1000 is widely used in building automation – many HVAC controllers have dedicated inputs for it. The high base resistance (1000 Ω) and high sensitivity mean that lead resistance has little effect on the reading, so 2-wire connection is usually enough. The key thing is to know which Ni1000 characteristic your controller needs: DIN (TK 6180 ppm/K) or LG (TK 5000 ppm/K).Sensing element

In a resistance temperature detector (RTD) the resistance of the metal rises as temperature rises. The Ni1000 element has 1000 Ω at 0 °C and 1618 Ω (DIN) / 1500 Ω (LG) at 100 °C. The controller passes a small measuring current through the element, measures the voltage drop and converts it into temperature.
Two Ni1000 characteristics are on the market: per DIN 43760 (TK 6180 ppm/K, about 1618 Ω at 100 °C) and Ni1000-LG (TK 5000 ppm/K, about 1500 Ω at 100 °C). At 0 °C both have the same 1000 Ω, but the difference grows with temperature, so the same characteristic must be selected in the controller. Check which one is supplied in this batch before ordering.
The probe of a duct sensor is inserted through the duct wall so that the sensing part sits in the air stream. The reading reflects the supply, extract or outdoor air temperature at the point where the probe is installed.
Why use a Ni1000 duct sensor?
A Ni1000 duct sensor is the right choice when replacing or installing sensors on HVAC controllers with Ni1000 inputs. Thanks to its high sensitivity (about 5–6 Ω/K), lead resistance has little effect on the reading, so the sensor can be connected with a simple two-core cable over a longer distance than a PT100.Technical specifications

- Duct air temperature measurement – monitoring of supply, extract or outdoor air in an air handling unit
- Passive resistive signal – no separate power supply, connects directly to the controller input
- High sensitivity – about 5–6 Ω/K, so lead resistance has little effect on the reading
- Compatibility with HVAC controllers – many building automation controllers have Ni1000 inputs
- Feedback for control – the controller adjusts heating, cooling or heat recovery output based on the reading
- Protection logic – the reading is used, e.g., in heater frost or overheat protection functions in the controller
How does it differ from similar products?
NTC sensor (e.g. 10 kΩ) NTC resistance falls as temperature rises and changes non-linearly; Ni1000 resistance rises and its characteristic is defined. PT1000 Both have 1000 Ω at 0 °C, but the metal and curve differ: Ni1000 is more sensitive, PT1000 is standardised by IEC 60751. They are not interchangeable. Ni1000-LG vs Ni1000 DIN At 0 °C both are 1000 Ω, but at 100 °C about 1500 Ω and 1618 Ω. The controller setting must match the sensor characteristic. Where is it used?
- Supply air ducts of air handling units
- Extract air ducts
- Outdoor air intake ducts
- Air-conditioning systems (AHU)
- Building automation (BMS) systems
- Industrial ventilation and drying systems
Use by need
For beginners.
The key point is that the sensor type must match the controller setting. If Ni1000 is selected in the controller, this sensor fits; a sensor of a different type will show the wrong temperature. For experienced installers.
Before replacing an old sensor, check the controller documentation to see whether the input is for Ni1000 (DIN, TK 6180) or Ni1000-LG (TK 5000). If in doubt, measure the old sensor's resistance at a known temperature and compare it with both curves. In a 2-wire Ni1000 (DIN) connection, 1 Ω of lead resistance gives an error of only about 0.16 °C.For energy engineers / designers.
In the design, specify the element type (Ni1000), characteristic, accuracy class, wiring scheme and probe length for the duct size. Place the sensor in a straight duct section, away from the heater or fan.Practical application
The extract air sensor of an office building's air handling unit has failed, and the controller input is configured for Ni1000. The installer checks in the controller menu which Ni1000 characteristic is selected, orders the matching sensor and fits it into the same duct opening – no controller reprogramming is needed.Pros / advantages
- Passive – no power supply needed
- Standard characteristic – easy to configure in the controller
- Simple connection to a resistance input
- High sensitivity – less lead resistance effect than PT100
- Suitable for ventilation in residential, commercial and industrial buildings
Cons / limitations
- Works only with a controller that supports a Ni1000 input
- There are two Ni1000 characteristics (DIN and LG) – you must know which one is needed
- Exact dimensions, IP and range for this batch are not confirmed – check before ordering
Safety and installation notes
- ⚡ The sensor is connected to a controller or panel that may contain 230 V AC circuits – disconnect the power before work; panel work must be done by a qualified electrician.
- Route the signal cable separately from power cables and frequency converter lines to reduce interference.
- Seal the duct opening around the probe so that no air is drawn in and no condensation forms.
- Do not install directly after a heater or next to a fan – the air there is not mixed and the reading will be inaccurate.
Quick selection guide
Ni10001000 Ω at 0 °CDuctPassive signalSuitable when you need:- To replace an existing duct sensor of the same type (Ni1000)
- To measure supply or extract air temperature
- To connect to an HVAC controller with a Ni1000 input
Check before choosing:- Whether the controller input is configured for Ni1000
- Which Ni1000 characteristic (DIN TK 6180 or LG TK 5000) is set in the controller
- Probe length for the duct diameter and mounting point
Important reminder: Ni1000 does not replace PT1000, NTC or a Ni1000 of the other characteristic – even though the resistance at 0 °C is the same (1000 Ω). The sensor only measures, control is done by the controller.☝ Elsprendimai.eu recommends:- Sensors and transmitters – selection guide – how to tell NTC, PT and Ni sensors apart

FAQ
Does this sensor need a power supply?
No. It is a passive resistive element – the measuring current is supplied by the controller input. Can I replace Ni1000 with an NTC sensor?
No. The resistance and characteristic curve differ, so the controller will show the wrong temperature. The sensor type must match the controller setting. How do I check that the sensor works?
Disconnect it from the controller and measure the resistance with a multimeter. At 0 °C it should be about 1000 Ω, at room temperature slightly higher.Where in the duct should the sensor be installed?
In a straight section where the air is well mixed – not directly after a heater, cooler or fan. What is the difference between Ni1000 and Ni1000-LG?
Both have 1000 Ω at 0 °C, but the temperature coefficient differs: DIN – 6180 ppm/K (about 1618 Ω at 100 °C), LG – 5000 ppm/K (about 1500 Ω). The same characteristic must be selected in the controller.Can a Ni1000 be connected with two wires?
Usually yes – thanks to the high sensitivity, the 2-wire error is small. For very long lines a lead resistance correction can be entered in the controller.Sources: Element characteristic – general Ni1000 characteristics: DIN 43760 (TK 6180 ppm/K) and Ni1000-LG (TK 5000 ppm/K).
