  • Immersion temperature sensor | PT1000 | 100 mm probe | IP65 | TIC PT1000

    Code: TIC PT1000

PT1000 immersion sensor with a 100 mm probe for measuring liquid temperature in heating, hot water and cooling systems. Mounted in a thermowell, IP65 housing, connects directly to the controller's PT1000 input.

  • Immersion temperature sensor PT1000 – 100 mm probe, IP65

The PT1000 immersion sensor measures liquid temperature in pipelines, tanks and heat exchangers – in heating, hot water and cooling systems. The 100 mm probe is inserted into a thermowell, so the sensor can be replaced without draining the system. PT1000 is a platinum resistance element with 1000 Ω at 0 °C (IEC 60751); the housing protection rating is IP65.

    Key point:
PT1000 is one of the most versatile temperature sensors: a standardised characteristic, stability and a high base resistance, so lead resistance has little effect on the reading. It is supported by most heat substation controllers, PLCs and converters. With a suitable thermowell the sensor is protected from pressure and flow, and servicing becomes simple.

    Operating principle

The resistance of the PT1000 element rises with temperature: 1000 Ω at 0 °C and about 1385 Ω at 100 °C (IEC 60751, α = 0.00385 1/K). The controller passes a small measuring current through the element and calculates the temperature from the voltage drop.

The resistance changes by about 3.85 Ω per degree, so in a 2-wire connection 1 Ω of lead resistance raises the reading by only about 0.26 °C – ten times less than with PT100. In most heating and ventilation systems a 2-wire connection is sufficient.

The probe is inserted into a thermowell screwed into the pipe or tank. The thermowell takes the pressure and flow and transfers heat to the sensor through its wall – which is why the probe must fit the thermowell precisely and reach its bottom.

Why use a PT1000 immersion sensor?
The sensor accurately measures the temperature of district heating supply and return water, hot water or glycol and passes it to the controller. Because it is mounted in a thermowell, it can be checked or replaced without draining the system or reducing pressure.

    Main functions

    • Liquid temperature measurement – in pipelines, tanks, heat exchangers
    • Thermowell mounting – the sensor can be replaced without draining the system
    • Standard IEC 60751 characteristic – compatible with most controllers, PLCs and converters
    • Low lead effect – 1 Ω of lead resistance ≈ 0.26 °C, so 2 wires are often enough
    • IP65 housing – protected against dust and water jets in plant rooms
    • Feedback for control – the controller operates a valve, pump or boiler based on the reading

How does it differ from similar products?

Duct sensor A duct sensor measures air temperature in a duct; an immersion sensor measures liquid temperature through a thermowell in a pipe or tank.
Clamp-on (surface) sensor A surface sensor measures the pipe wall temperature and is easier to install, but an immersion sensor in a thermowell is more accurate and responds faster.
PT100 immersion sensor Same principle, but PT100 has 100 Ω at 0 °C – lead resistance has a 10 times greater effect. Choose according to the controller input.

    Where is it used?

    • Heat substations – supply and return water measurement
    • Boiler rooms and heating systems
    • Domestic hot water tanks (calorifiers)
    • Cooling and glycol circuits
    • Heat pump and solar collector systems
    • Industrial process pipelines

    Use by need

    For beginners.
The sensor is inserted into an already installed thermowell and connected to the PT1000 input of the controller. The key points are that PT1000 is selected in the controller and that the probe slides freely into the thermowell all the way to the bottom.
    For experienced installers.
Check the inner diameter and length of the thermowell against the 100 mm probe. For better heat transfer, thermally conductive paste can be added to the thermowell. For long lines or noisy environments use a shielded cable or a 4–20 mA converter.
    For energy engineers / designers.
In the design, specify the element type (PT1000, IEC 60751), accuracy class, thermowell material, thread and pressure rating according to the system parameters. The insertion depth should place the probe in the middle of the flow, not near the wall.

    Practical application

A failed supply water sensor is replaced in a heat substation. Because the old one sat in a thermowell, the installer switches off the controller supply, pulls out the old probe, inserts the new PT1000 with a 100 mm probe into the same thermowell and secures it – the system does not need to be drained, and the job takes a few minutes.

    Pros / advantages

    • Standard PT1000 characteristic – easy to replace
    • Low lead effect – simple 2-wire connection
    • Replaceable without draining the system (with a thermowell)
    • IP65 housing for plant rooms
    • Passive – no power supply needed

    Cons / limitations

    • Requires a thermowell of suitable diameter and length
    • Works only with a controller that supports a PT1000 input
    • Probe diameter, measuring range and number of wires for this batch are not confirmed – please check

    Safety and installation notes

    • ⚡ The sensor is connected to a controller or panel that may contain 230 V AC circuits – disconnect the power before work; panel work must be done by a qualified electrician.
    • Do not insert the sensor directly into pressurised liquid without a thermowell – pressure and flow must be taken by the thermowell.
    • Do not unscrew a thermowell from a system under pressure or with hot liquid – first relieve the pressure and let it cool down.
    • Route the signal cable separately from power cables and seal the cable entry to maintain IP65.

    Suitable when you need:
    • To measure water, district heating or glycol temperature in a pipe
    • To replace an existing PT1000 immersion sensor
    • To mount the sensor in a thermowell and replace it without draining the system
    Check before choosing:
    • Whether the controller input is configured for PT1000
    • Inner diameter and length of the thermowell for the 100 mm probe
    • Maximum medium temperature and probe diameter
Important reminder: Without a thermowell the sensor is not intended for direct installation in a pressurised pipeline – pressure and flow are taken by the thermowell. Choose the thermowell according to the system pressure and medium.

    FAQ

Can the sensor be used without a thermowell?
Not in a pressurised pipeline – there the sensor must be inserted into a thermowell. The thermowell takes the pressure and allows the sensor to be replaced without draining the system.
What is the PT1000 resistance at different temperatures?
    1000 Ω at 0 °C, about 1078 Ω at 20 °C and about 1385 Ω at 100 °C (IEC 60751).
Can PT1000 be replaced with a PT100 or NTC sensor?
No. The resistance and characteristic differ, so the controller will read incorrectly. The sensor type must match the controller setting.
    Which thermowell fits?
In our range this sensor is paired with the SSPVA100 thermowell. Before ordering, check the inner diameter and length of the thermowell against the probe.
How many wires need to be connected?
PT1000 is usually connected with 2 wires – 1 Ω of lead resistance causes only about 0.26 °C error. Check the number of wires for this batch.
    What does IP65 mean?
The housing is protected against dust and water jets from any direction. It does not mean that the housing can be permanently submerged in water.

    Sources: Element characteristic – IEC 60751 (PT1000: 1000 Ω at 0 °C, α = 0.00385 1/K). Probe length 100 mm and IP65 – according to the product designation; no manufacturer datasheet was found. Checked 2026-10-18.
