Modular multifunction energy meter | 3-phase | 1/5 A CT operated | 2 tariffs | RS485 Modbus | MID | DIN | Eastron SDM630MCT-2T
SDM630MCT-2T – three-phase multifunction energy meter on a DIN rail, designed to connect via standard 1 A or 5 A secondary current transformers with a primary current from 1 to 9999 A. The instrument measures bidirectionally, has two-tariff metering, an RS485 Modbus RTU interface and MID certification. Used in industrial incomers, solar plants, commercial buildings and apartment blocks, where the current exceeds the possibilities of direct connection.
Key idea:
Above 100 A a meter can no longer be connected directly – current transformers are needed, and most existing boards already have CTs with a 1 A or 5 A secondary. The SDM630MCT-2T works with exactly these, at class 0.5S accuracy, so it performs well even at low load (starting current from 20 mA). Two tariffs and bidirectional metering allow grid supply and generator or solar energy to be metered separately, while the MID certificate allows the readings to be used for billing.Current input

230 V L-N / 120 V L-N (80–120% Un)Communication / tariffs
RS485 Modbus RTU, 2 pulse outputs, 2 tariffsCertificate / mounting
MID (2014/32/EU), EN 50470-3:2022; DIN rail, 4 modulesHow it works
The primary conductor of each phase passes through a current transformer, and its 1 A or 5 A secondary output is connected to the meter's current terminals. The CT primary current (1–9999 A) is entered in the settings and, if voltage transformers are used, the PT ratio – the meter then converts the readings to primary values itself. Measurement is RMS with harmonics in a 3P4W, 3P3W or 1P2W configuration, and active energy is recorded at class 0.5S accuracy per IEC 62053-22 (MID class B and C).
Energy is summed separately for the import and export directions, and separately for each of the two tariffs. The tariff is switched either by time or by energy source – for example, grid supply in one register, generator or solar energy in the other. Data is available on the display, via two pulse outputs and via RS485 Modbus RTU (1200–38400 bps, up to 1000 m, addresses 1–247, response < 100 ms).
What makes the SDM630MCT-2T worthwhile?
It allows a modern MID meter to be fitted into an existing board with 5 A transformers without replacing the CTs, while a BMS or PV monitoring system receives voltages, currents, power, power factor and bidirectional energy counters via Modbus registers. The two-tariff registers allow costs to be accurately allocated between different sources or time zones without extra equipment.Technical specifications

- Two tariffs – accounting by time or by energy source.
- Class 0.5S accuracy – reliable readings even at low load, from 20 mA.
- RS485 Modbus RTU – integration into SCADA, BMS and PV monitoring systems up to 1000 m away.
- Full parameter set – active, reactive, apparent power and energy, U, I, Hz, PF.
Where is it used?

- Commercial buildings – billing metering for tenants above 100 A
- Monitoring of shared incomer consumption in apartment blocks
- Energy-balancing and cost-allocation systems
Use by need
For the domestic user.
For a home incomer up to 100 A it is more sensible to choose the direct-connection model (SDM630-MT). The SDM630MCT-2T makes sense for a high-power smallholding or farm where the incomer already has CTs, or where generator energy needs to be metered separately.For businesses and industry.
This is the standard solution for an incomer above 100 A: MID metering for cost allocation, two tariffs for day/night or grid/generator separation, and Modbus data for energy management.For electricians / engineers.
Check the CT secondary current (1 A or 5 A) and accuracy class – for billing metering, the CTs must be no worse than the meter's class. Plan the auxiliary supply, RS485 bus and Modbus address; enter the CT primary current and PT ratio in the settings before sealing.Practical example
At the 400 A incomer of a manufacturing plant, the board already has 400/5 A current transformers installed. An old induction meter is replaced with an SDM630MCT-2T, and the primary current is set to 400 A. The first tariff records daytime consumption, the second night-time consumption, while the export register shows how much a 200 kW rooftop solar installation feeds back into the grid at weekends. Via RS485, the EMS reads power every minute and, as it approaches the 350 kW permitted limit, temporarily limits compressor operation.
Pros
- MID certificate – readings are suitable for official and billing metering.
- Standard CTs – works with any 1 A / 5 A transformer up to 9999 A.
- Two tariffs – flexible cost allocation by time or source.
- Bidirectional metering – suitable for solar plants and generators.
- High accuracy – class 0.5S, starting current from 20 mA.
- Long bus – RS485 up to 1000 m, response time under 100 ms.
Cons / limitations
- An auxiliary AC/DC supply is required – without it the meter does not operate.
- Not suitable for direct connection – current transformers are required and are not included.
- Only two tariffs – more complex tariff schemes require the 4-tariff model.
- No Wi-Fi or Ethernet – remote monitoring requires an RS485 network or a converter.
- Configuration (CT, PT, tariffs, Modbus) requires technical knowledge.
Safety and installation notes
- Never disconnect the CT secondary circuit while current is flowing in the primary – an open secondary produces a dangerous voltage; use shorting terminals.
- Protect the voltage-measuring and auxiliary-supply circuits with separate low-current fuses per the manufacturer's datasheet.
- Check the CT direction (P1 towards the grid) and phase correspondence with the voltage terminals – a mistake shows up as negative power or a low PF.
- For billing metering use CTs no worse than class 0.5S; otherwise the meter's accuracy will not be fully realised.
- RS485 – screened twisted-pair cable, termination at both ends, a unique address.
- The board must provide indoor conditions; the protection rating is per the manufacturer's datasheet.

MID (2014/32/EU), EN 50470-3:2022; DIN rail, 4 modulesSuitable when you need:- MID metering on an incomer above 100 A via existing 1 A / 5 A CTs;
- separate metering of grid and generator or solar energy across two tariffs;
- Modbus data for a SCADA, BMS or EMS system.
Check before use:- whether the CT secondary current is 1 A or 5 A and what the primary is (up to 9999 A);
- whether an auxiliary AC/DC power source is available;
- whether the voltage matches 230 V L-N (80–120% Un) or PTs are used;
- whether two tariffs are sufficient.
Important reminder:
The meter records, but does not protect – incomer protection is provided by separate devices. For billing metering the whole chain matters: the MID meter, CTs of the correct class, and a correctly entered ratio.FAQ
