Designed for domestic and commercial incomers up to 100 A, solar installations, rental units and industrial distribution boards where MID-approved metering is needed without current transformers.

    Key idea:
    On an incomer up to 100 A, current transformers are an unnecessary complication – they add cost, take up space and introduce an extra error. The SDM630-MT accepts the phase conductors directly into its terminals, so it is installed like an ordinary modular meter, while internally it offers what is normally found only in analysers: bidirectional metering, 4-tariff accounting, a demand (dmd) function and Modbus. MID calibration means the readings can be used for billing, not just for information.

    How it works

    The three phase conductors and neutral connect directly to the meter's terminals – current up to 100 A flows through internal measuring shunts, while voltage is measured from the same terminals. The meter calculates RMS values including harmonics, active, reactive and apparent power, power factor, frequency, and current and voltage demand (dmd). 1P2W, 3P3W and 3P4W configurations are supported.

    Energy is accumulated separately for the import and export directions, and separately for each of the 4 tariffs. Tariff switching over the 10 time segments is controlled via RS485 – a control system or an external clock (RTC) determines which tariff is active. Data is available on the display, via two pulse outputs, and via Modbus registers (RS485, 1200–38400 bps, up to 1000 m), from which a BMS, SCADA or PV monitoring system can read instantaneous parameters and energy counters.

    What makes the SDM630-MT worthwhile?
    A single 72 mm-wide instrument performs the functions of a billing meter, a tariff meter and a network analyser on an incomer up to 100 A. For the owner of a solar installation it shows how much energy has been bought and how much fed back into the grid; for a rental unit, how much has been consumed on each tariff; for the engineer, through the dmd function, how the load changes in real time and whether it is approaching the permitted power limit.

    Key features

    • Direct connection up to 100 A – no current transformers, installed like an ordinary modular meter.
    • Bidirectional metering – imported and exported energy in separate registers for solar installations.
    • Up to 4 tariffs – 10 time segments controlled via RS485, for day/night and more complex schemes.
    • Multifunction measurement – power, current, voltage, frequency, power factor, RMS with harmonics.
    • Demand (dmd) function – real-time load changes, for controlling permitted power.
    • RS485 Modbus – integration into BMS, SCADA and energy-management platforms up to 1000 m.

    Where is it used?

    • Incomers of residential buildings with day/night tariff monitoring
    • Solar installations – comparison of exported and imported energy
    • Rental units and cost-allocation systems with individual billing
    • Industrial distribution boards – load balancing and data analysis
    • Commercial buildings – metering of individual premises or equipment up to 100 A
    • Data source for smart-home and energy-management platforms via Modbus

    Use by need

    For the domestic user.
    For a home with a solar installation this is a meter that shows the real balance: how much was bought, how much sold, how much consumed on the night tariff. It connects directly, so installation is no different from an ordinary modular meter – provided the incomer is up to 100 A.
    For businesses and industry.
    For individual lines or tenants up to 100 A, the SDM630-MT provides MID metering, 4-tariff cost allocation and dmd data showing when a line is approaching its limit. Via Modbus, all meters are connected to a single bus and read centrally.
    For electricians / engineers.
    Check that the incomer current does not exceed 100 A – otherwise choose the CT model (SDM630MCT-2T). Tariff switching requires an RS485 setup and an external clock or control system, so without Modbus the 4 tariffs will not work by themselves. Plan the bus, addresses and conductor cross-section for the 100 A terminals.

    Practical example

    In a household with a 10 kW solar installation and a 3 x 40 A incomer, an SDM630-MT is installed immediately after the main breaker. Over a year, the import register showed 4,200 kWh, the export register 6,800 kWh, and the night-tariff register 1,900 kWh of heat-pump consumption. The home automation system reads instantaneous power every 10 s via RS485 and, when export exceeds 3 kW, switches on the water heater so the energy is used locally rather than sold at a lower price.

    Pros

    • No current transformers – direct connection up to 100 A, fewer components and less error.
    • MID calibration – suitable for official energy metering and billing.
    • Up to 4 tariffs – more than ordinary two-tariff meters, 10 time segments.
    • Bidirectional metering – suitable for the balance of a solar installation.
    • Modbus integration – straightforward connection into automation systems.
    • Versatile – 1P2W, 3P3W, 3P4W configurations, for both domestic and industrial use.

    Cons / limitations

    • 100 A limit – larger incomers need the CT model.
    • Tariff configuration requires an external clock (RTC) and an RS485 setup – without them it works as a single-tariff meter.
    • No Wi-Fi or Bluetooth – remote monitoring only via RS485 or a converter.
    • Integration with a control system requires a knowledgeable specialist.
    • IP51 – indoor use only, in a board with suitable protection.

    Safety and installation notes

    • Install only with the voltage switched off; there must be an incoming protective device upstream of the meter.
    • Select the conductor cross-section for the actual current up to 100 A, and the terminal size per the manufacturer's datasheet.
    • Observe the phase sequence and current direction (in–out) – otherwise import and export will be swapped.
    • Use a screened twisted-pair cable for the RS485 bus, terminate at both ends, and use unique addresses 1–247.
    • For billing metering, do not break the MID seal, and record the tariff settings before commissioning.
    • Operate in a dry location (IP51); check the terminals after the first load.

    Quick selection guide

    Suitable when you need:
    • MID metering on an incomer up to 100 A without current transformers;
    • an import/export balance for a solar installation and up to 4 tariffs;
    • Modbus data for home automation, a BMS or an EMS.
    Check before use:
    • whether the incomer current exceeds 100 A;
    • whether the voltage matches 230 V L-N (80–120% Un);
    • whether an RS485 setup and a clock for tariff control are in place;
    • whether there is room in the board for 4 modules (72 mm).
    Important reminder:
    The meter meters, but does not protect – install the incoming breaker and surge protection separately. The 4 tariffs work only with a control system via RS485; without one you get a single-tariff MID meter with Modbus.
