  • Modular three-phase energy meter | 100 A | 3×230/400 V | 1 tariff | Import / export | RS485 Modbus | MID | DIN | VEXEN ESM3100DM

The VEXEN ESM3100DM is a modular three-phase energy meter for direct connection in 4-wire 3×230/400 V networks up to 100 A with an RS485 Modbus RTU interface. It is intended for metering where readings must be passed automatically to a control system, inverter or data logger.

    Key point:
The key difference from the basic ESM3100D is separate import and export registers: the meter counts active energy taken from and delivered to the grid separately and shows power in both directions. Combined with MID and Modbus RTU, this makes it a practical meter for sub-metering and BMS projects.

    Bidirectional metering
Yes. The manufacturer's manual and Modbus register map confirm separate "Total Import kWh" and "Total Export kWh" registers as well as import / export power. It measures energy imported from and exported to the grid; an energy management system or an inverter (if it supports this meter) can read these values over Modbus. Compatibility with inverter power / export control must be confirmed separately – bidirectional metering alone is not enough.

    Communication interfaces and integration

    RS485 Modbus RTU
Remote reading of import / export kWh and power into SCADA, BMS, PLC or a data logger; via a Modbus gateway also into Home Assistant. Can serve as an external meter for inverter export control if the inverter supports this meter. Baud rate 1200–9600 bps, address 001–247.
    S0 pulse output
1000 imp/kWh – an additional signal for a pulse counter or PLC when no digital bus is used.

    Operating principle

    The meter is mounted on a 35 mm DIN rail and connected directly: L1, L2, L3 and N inputs (1, 2, 3, 4) and outputs (5, 6, 7, 8) – no current transformers are needed up to 100 A.

The meter measures active energy and power in both directions and keeps separate import and export registers plus a resettable partial counter.

Readings are shown on a backlit LCD and read via RS485 Modbus RTU; settings are password protected.

    Why choose the VEXEN ESM3100DM?
One MID device counts both consumed and exported energy and passes it to automation without pulse conversion. This saves time when integrating into a BMS or solar monitoring.

    Main functions

    • RS485 Modbus RTU – readings and power passed automatically to SCADA, BMS or PLC.
    • Import / export – separate registers for consumed and delivered energy.
    • MID – manufacturer's designation, suitable for billing between parties.
    • Direct connection up to 100 A – no current transformers.
    • Resettable partial counter – handy for measuring a specific period or test.
    • 1000 imp/kWh output – additional signal without a bus.
    • Password protection – communication settings cannot be changed accidentally.

How does it differ from similar models?

VEXEN ESM3100D Basic single-tariff MID meter without Modbus; the ESM3100DM adds RS485 and import / export registers.
VEXEN ESM3100DM2T Multifunction (V, A, PF, THD) with 2 tariffs by power source; the ESM3100DM is simpler but has confirmed import / export metering.
Eastron SDM630-MT 100 A, 4 tariffs, RS485 Modbus, MID, multifunction; the ESM3100DM has 1 tariff and energy / power only.
    THORGEON 01007 80 A, 2 tariffs, RS485 Modbus, MID; the ESM3100DM has a 100 A limit but 1 tariff.

    Where is it used?

    • Solar plants (import / export metering)
    • Inverter export limiting systems (if the inverter supports the meter)
    • Building management systems (BMS)
    • Remote metering of rented premises and sub-tenants
    • EV charging points
    • Energy monitoring of heat pumps and boilers
    • Production halls and equipment metering
    • Home energy management (Home Assistant via a Modbus gateway)

    Use by need

    Solar installers.
Consumed and exported energy plus a Modbus interface in one meter.
    Integrators.
Standard Modbus RTU and a documented register map.
    Landlords.
MID readings and remote reading without a site visit.

    Practical application

If a house with a solar plant needs to show how much energy was taken from the grid and how much was exported, the ESM3100DM is installed at the supply after the protective device, and its import and export registers are read via RS485 Modbus into a data logger or energy management system.

    Pros

    • Separate import and export registers
    • RS485 Modbus RTU with documented registers
    • MID designation
    • Direct connection up to 100 A
    • IP51 and insulation class II
    • Resettable partial counter

    Cons / limitations

    • Only 1 tariff – for dual-source tariffs choose the ESM3100DM2T
    • Does not measure voltage, current, power factor or THD – the ESM3100DM2T does
    • Modbus baud rate limited to 9600 bps
    • Compatibility with a specific inverter must be checked in the inverter's documentation
    • Currents above 100 A require a CT meter (ES3100DCT)

    Safety and installation notes

    • Installation and wiring must be done by a qualified electrician with the circuit isolated and verified dead.
    • Install an upstream protective device (MCB or fuses) sized to the cable cross-section and load – the meter is not a protective device.
    • Follow the phase and neutral wiring diagram in the manufacturer's manual; swapped inputs and outputs distort the readings.
    • Tighten the power terminals to the specified torque – a loose contact at 100 A overheats and can damage the meter.
    • Do not break the seals or open the front cover – this affects the measurement and, according to the manufacturer's manual, voids the warranty.
    • Run the RS485 line in twisted-pair cable and, on long lines, fit termination resistors at the ends.

    Quick selection guide

    100 A direct
    Modbus RTU
    Import / export
    MID
    Suitable when you need:
    • separate metering of energy imported from and exported to the grid
    • Modbus RTU integration
    • MID metering up to 100 A
    Check before use:
    • that the circuit current does not exceed 100 A
    • that the inverter or system supports this meter
    • that Modbus baud rate, parity and address match
Important reminder: The meter measures and transmits data but performs no protective functions and does not replace the grid operator's billing meter without the operator's consent.
