  • Modular three-phase energy meter | 100 A | 3×230/400 V | 2 tariffs | RS485 Modbus | Import / export | DIN | Selec EM4M-3P-C-100A

The Selec EM4M-3P-C-100A is a direct-connected three-phase energy meter for DIN rail mounting. Phase conductors up to 100 A are connected straight to the meter, so no current transformers are needed. It is designed for internal metering of buildings, feeders or equipment and for sending data to control systems.

    Key point:
This meter does more than show consumed kWh – it records import and export separately, measures U, I, P, Q, S, PF and frequency, and sends the data via RS485 Modbus RTU to a PLC, SCADA or BMS. Two pulse outputs also allow simpler pulse loggers to be connected. It is a practical choice when you need more than a basic meter but do not need MID.

    Bidirectional metering
Yes. The manufacturer specifies import and export metering of active, reactive and apparent energy. It measures energy imported from and exported to the grid – both directions are counted separately. As there is no MID, the data is for internal control, not for billing with the supplier. Compatibility with inverter power / export control must be confirmed separately – bidirectional metering alone is not enough.

    Communication interfaces and integration

    RS485 Modbus RTU
Remote reading of all measured values into a PLC, SCADA, BMS, data logger or Home Assistant (via a Modbus gateway). 2400–38400 bps, addresses 1–255, line length up to 500 m – several meters can share one bus.
    2 pulse outputs (5–24 V DC, 100 mA)
Output 1 – 1000 imp/kWh for active energy, output 2 – reactive energy (1/10/100/1000 imp/kVArh). Suitable for pulse counters, PLC inputs and simple energy monitoring systems.

    Operating principle

The meter mounts on a 35 mm DIN rail. Phase and neutral conductors connect directly to the terminals (3P-4W, 3P-3W or 1P-2W), while the RS485 and pulse lines use separate signal terminals.

The measuring circuit captures the voltage and current of each phase, calculates power and energy, and accumulates import and export separately according to the active tariff.

Results are shown on a backlit 3-line LCD and transmitted via Modbus RTU and the pulse outputs – you see the data both on site and in your system.

    Why choose the Selec EM4M-3P-C-100A?
One device replaces a basic meter and a network parameter meter: you get energy in both directions, power, PF and demand, while wiring stays simple – no current transformers up to 100 A.

    Main functions

    • Import and export metering – consumed and exported energy shown separately.
    • Three energy types – kWh, kVArh and kVAh let you assess the reactive load too.
    • 2 tariffs – energy can be accumulated in two tariff registers.
    • RS485 Modbus RTU – data to SCADA, BMS or PLC without extra meters.
    • 2 pulse outputs – separate for active and reactive energy.
    • Power demand – the maximum demand value helps assess peaks and capacity reserve.

How does it differ from similar models?

Eastron SDM630-MT Also 100 A direct with RS485 Modbus, but has MID and 4 tariffs. Choose it if the data is used for billing.
Rayfull TD50MTMID 100 A, RS485 Modbus, MID, 4 tariffs – for billing metering. Instead of MID, the EM4M offers 2 pulse outputs including reactive energy pulses.
Ollo 3P-351 / ESTXM302 Simple 100 A meters without interfaces – display only. The EM4M fits when data must be sent to a system.
Selec MFM384-R-C-CE Same manufacturer, but connected via current transformers (…/5 A or …/1 A) and without pulse outputs – for currents above 100 A.

    Where is it used?

    • Internal metering of buildings, floors and tenants
    • Monitoring of solar PV generation and export
    • Energy control of production lines and equipment
    • Metering of heat pumps, compressors and ventilation units
    • Energy monitoring in BMS and SCADA systems
    • Internal metering of EV charging points
    • Upgrading distribution boards instead of basic meters

    Use by need

    Electricians and installers.
Direct connection up to 100 A – fewer components and errors, installed like a standard modular meter.
    Automation integrators.
Modbus RTU with programmable baud rate, parity and address – easy to add to an existing bus.
    Facility managers.
Clear data on consumption, export and power peaks for every monitored feeder.

    Practical use

If a site has a solar PV system and you want to see how much energy is used on site and how much is fed into the grid, install the EM4M-3P-C-100A in the main board after the utility meter and read its Modbus data into a data logger or smart home system. Import and export are shown separately, and the pulse output can additionally send kWh counts to a simple counter.

    Pros

    • Direct connection up to 100 A – no current transformers needed
    • Import and export for all three energy types
    • RS485 Modbus RTU and 2 pulse outputs in one device
    • 2 tariffs and maximum power demand recording
    • Backlit 3-line LCD – easy to read in the panel
    • Wide supply range 85–285 V L-N

    Cons / limitations

    • No MID – not suitable for billing; choose the Eastron SDM630-MT or Rayfull TD50MTMID instead.
    • Maximum current 100 A – larger loads need a CT-operated meter such as the Selec MFM384-R-C-CE or Eastron SDM630MCT.
    • The manufacturer does not state an IP rating – install only in an enclosed panel.
    • No wireless connectivity – for Wi-Fi look at Tuya models (e.g. EL-TVPS3-80T).

    Safety and installation notes

    • Installation must be carried out by a qualified electrician with the supply disconnected and verified dead.
    • Install suitable upstream protection (circuit breaker or fuses) according to the cable cross-section.
    • Make sure the phase sequence and current direction follow the wiring diagram – otherwise import will be recorded as export.
    • Run the RS485 line in shielded twisted-pair cable and use 120 Ω terminators at both bus ends.
    • Tighten the power terminals to the correct torque and check them for heating after a few days of operation.

    Quick selection guide

    100 A direct
    Import / export
    RS485 Modbus RTU
    2 pulse outputs
    Suitable when you need:
    • internal metering up to 100 A with data transfer
    • to measure energy imported from and exported to the grid separately
    • to integrate a meter into SCADA, BMS or a PLC via Modbus
    Check before use:
    • that the load current does not exceed 100 A
    • that you do not need MID (billing metering)
    • which Modbus baud rate and address your system requires
Important reminder: The EM4M-3P-C-100A does not replace the grid operator's billing meter and is not a protective device – it does not disconnect the load on overload or overvoltage.
