Modular three-phase multifunction energy meter | CT-operated …/5 A (…/1 A) | 3×230/400 V | RS485 Modbus | Import / export | DIN | Selec MFM384-R-C-CE
The Selec MFM384-R-C-CE is a three-phase multifunction meter for DIN rail, connected via current transformers. This is the DIN version (90 × 70 mm), not the 96 × 96 mm panel-mount MFM384. It is designed for higher-current feeders where a direct-connected meter is no longer suitable.
Key point:
Programmable CT ratio (primary up to 10 kA, secondary 1 A or 5 A) and PT ratio let the same device be used from a small board to a large substation. One unit shows voltages, currents, power, PF, frequency, import and export energy and power demand, and sends all data to SCADA or BMS via RS485 Modbus RTU.Current input

1⇄Bidirectional metering
Yes. The manufacturer specifies import and export metering of active, reactive and apparent energy. It measures energy imported from and exported to the grid – both directions are counted separately. The data is for internal control, as this CE version has no MID. Compatibility with inverter power / export control must be confirmed separately – bidirectional metering alone is not enough.Communication interfaces and integration
RS485 Modbus RTU
Reading of all measured values into SCADA, BMS, PLC or an energy monitoring system. 300–19200 bps, parity none/odd/even, addresses 1–255, line length up to 500 m – many meters on one bus.Operating principle
The meter mounts on a 35 mm DIN rail. Current circuits connect via current transformers (5 A or 1 A secondary), voltage directly up to 300 V L-N or via voltage transformers; auxiliary supply 85–270 V AC.
The CT and PT ratios and wiring configuration are set in the menu, and the device scales the measured values to actual primary-side values.
The backlit LCD shows real values for each phase and the energy registers, and the same data is sent to your system via Modbus RTU.
Why choose the Selec MFM384-R-C-CE?
One compact device replaces voltmeters, ammeters and an energy meter: high-current feeders are measured via standard CTs and the data is immediately available via Modbus.Technical specifications

How does it differ from similar models?
Eastron SDM630MCT Also CT-operated with RS485 Modbus, but has MID. Choose it if the data is used for billing. Eastron SMART X96-1 96 × 96 mm panel meter via CT with MID – mounted in the panel door. The MFM384-R-C-CE mounts on a DIN rail. Schneider PowerLogic PM5110 / PM5330 Panel-mount power analysers via CT with broader analysis. The MFM384-R-C-CE is a more compact DIN solution for the main parameters. Selec EM4M-3P-C-100A Direct connection up to 100 A with 2 tariffs and 2 pulse outputs. The MFM384-R-C-CE is needed when current exceeds 100 A. Where is it used?
- Incoming and main distribution boards with high currents
- Transformer substations and medium-voltage incomers (via PT)
- Monitoring of industrial feeders and large equipment
- Control of solar PV generation and export
- Energy monitoring of commercial buildings in BMS
- Generator and backup power feeders
- Power factor correction equipment and PF control

One model for different CT ratios – easier to standardise specifications across boards.Automation integrators.
Standard Modbus RTU with programmable baud rate, parity and address.Energy engineers and facility managers.
Clear data on power, PF, peaks and energy in both directions.Practical use
If the plant incomer has 400/5 A current transformers and you need to see actual loads and energy in SCADA, install the MFM384-R-C-CE next to them on a DIN rail, set CT primary 400 A and secondary 5 A in the menu, and let the system read currents, power, PF and import/export energy via RS485 Modbus RTU.Pros
- Programmable CT (up to 10 kA) and PT (up to 500 kV) ratio
- Import and export for all three energy types
- Compact 90 × 70 mm DIN housing
- RS485 Modbus RTU up to 500 m
- Backlit 3-line LCD
- Supports 3P-4W, 3P-3W, 2P-3W and 1P-2W configurations
Cons / limitations
- No MID – for billing choose the Eastron SDM630MCT or SMART X96-1.
- Separate current transformers are required – not included.
- No pulse output or tariffs – if you need them up to 100 A, choose the Selec EM4M-3P-C-100A.
- Requires a separate 85–270 V AC supply; the manufacturer does not state an IP rating – install in an enclosed panel.
Safety and installation notes
- Installation must be carried out by a qualified electrician with the supply disconnected and verified dead.
- Never open the CT secondary circuit while current flows in the primary – short it first.
- Protect the voltage measurement and supply circuits with fuses or circuit breakers.
- Observe CT polarity (P1/P2, S1/S2) and phase matching – otherwise power and energy direction will be wrong.
- Run the RS485 line in shielded twisted pair with 120 Ω terminators at both bus ends.
Quick selection guide
CT …/5 A or …/1 ACT up to 10 kAImport / exportRS485 Modbus RTUSuitable when you need:- to measure feeders with currents above 100 A
- to send network parameters to SCADA or BMS via Modbus
- a compact DIN meter instead of a panel meter
Check before use:- that you have suitable current transformers (5 A or 1 A secondary)
- that you do not need MID (billing metering)
- that an 85–270 V AC supply is available in the panel
Important reminder: The MFM384-R-C-CE does not replace the grid operator's billing meter and is not a protection relay – it only measures and transmits data.FAQ
Is it a DIN or panel meter?
It is the DIN rail version (90 × 70 × 66.3 mm), not the 96 × 96 mm panel MFM384.What does 6 A mean?
It is the maximum CT secondary current; nominal input is 5 A, while the load can be up to 10 kA depending on the CT.Can it be used with …/1 A current transformers?
Yes, the secondary current is programmable as 1 A or 5 A.Does the meter have MID?
No, this is the CE version for internal metering.Does it measure energy exported to the grid?
Yes, it records imported and exported energy separately; check compatibility with inverter export control separately. Is there a pulse output?
No, data is transmitted only via RS485 Modbus RTU.Wiring diagram via current transformers

- CT installed backwards (P1 on the load side) or S1/S2 swapped – negative power, energy counted as export.
- CT and voltage input taken from different phases – wrong power and cos φ; the total may be close to zero.
- CT ratio not set in the menu (e.g. 200/5) or 1 A selected instead of 5 A – readings wrong by a fixed factor.
- CT secondary opened under load – dangerous voltage at the terminals and possible CT damage. Short-circuit it before disconnecting.
- N (terminal 16) not connected in a 3-phase 4-wire system – distorted phase voltages and power values.
- Auxiliary supply (18–19) connected between two phases (400 V) – exceeds the 85–270 V AC limit and damages the device.
- RS485 A+/B− swapped or no 120 Ω terminator at the end of the line – no communication or intermittent data.
- CT secondary wires too thin or too long – the CT is overburdened and measurement error increases.
