  • Modular three-phase energy meter | 80 A | 3×230/400 V | 4 tariffs | RS485 Modbus | MID | DIN | Orno OR-WE-517

The Orno OR-WE-517 is a modular three-phase energy meter for direct connection to 3×230/400 V networks up to 80 A. It is designed for sub-metering, tenant billing and automated systems where readings need to be collected remotely via RS485 Modbus RTU.

    Key point:
The meter is MID certified (0120/SGS0278) with accuracy class B to EN 50470-3, so its readings are valid for billing between parties. Separate forward and reverse energy registers plus 4 tariffs let one device record both consumption and energy fed back to the grid. All data is available over Modbus – no extra converters needed.
    Max. current
    80 A
    Network
    3×230/400 V
    Certification
    MID, class B
    Interface
    RS485 Modbus RTU
    ⇄
    Bidirectional metering
Yes. The meter stores forward (import) and reverse (export) active and reactive energy separately, also per tariff T1–T4. It measures energy imported from and exported to the grid – both values are shown separately. Compatibility with inverter power / export control must be confirmed separately – bidirectional metering alone is not enough.

    Communication interfaces and integration

    RS485 Modbus RTU
Remote reading of all registers into SCADA, BMS, PLC, data logger or Home Assistant (via an RS485 adapter). Default address 1, 9600 bps, 8E1. Tariff times are also set via RS485.
    S0 pulse output
    Open-collector output 12–27 V DC, ≤27 mA, 1000 imp/kWh – for a pulse counter, PLC or energy monitoring module.
    IR optical port
Local data readout with an optical reading head.

    Operating principle

The meter mounts on a 35 mm DIN rail and connects directly into a 3-phase 4-wire (3P+N) circuit – no current transformers are needed up to 80 A.

It measures voltage and current on each phase, calculates active, reactive and apparent power, power factor and frequency, and accumulates energy by direction and active tariff.

Results are shown on the LCD (6+2 digits) and available over Modbus RTU, while S0 pulses are sent to an additional counter or controller.

    Why choose the Orno OR-WE-517?
One device does three jobs: MID-grade billing, remote data transfer and import/export separation. That saves panel space and the cost of separate measuring modules.

    Main functions

    • MID metering – readings valid for billing tenants or sub-users
    • RS485 Modbus RTU – remote reading without extra modules
    • 4 tariffs – day, night and other time-zone metering
    • Import / export – separate registers for consumed and exported energy
    • Network parameters – U, I, P, Q, S, PF and Hz per phase
    • S0 output 1000 imp/kWh – parallel signal for a controller
    • IR port – local data readout

How does it differ from similar models?

Orno OR-WE-520 Same 80 A MID meter class, but without RS485 or tariffs – S0 pulses only. Choose the OR-WE-517 when remote reading is required.
    THORGEON 01007 Also 80 A, MID and RS485 Modbus, but 2 tariffs. The OR-WE-517 offers 4 tariffs.
    Eastron SDM630-MT 100 A direct, 4 tariffs, Modbus, MID – for currents above 80 A.
    Schneider Acti9 iEM3150 63 A direct, Modbus, MID – for Schneider systems; the OR-WE-517 has a higher 80 A limit.

    Where is it used?

    • Tenant metering in apartment and office buildings
    • Solar PV import / export monitoring
    • Building management systems (BMS)
    • Industrial panels and feeder sub-metering
    • EV charging point metering
    • Home energy management (Home Assistant, inverter systems)
    • Agricultural and warehouse sites

    Use by need

    For building managers.
MID readings for billing and remote reading without walking the site.
    For solar PV owners.
Energy drawn and exported shown separately, data via Modbus.
    For electricians / integrators.
Standard Modbus RTU, direct 3P+N connection up to 80 A, DIN mounting.

    Practical use

If every tenant in an office building has a three-phase supply up to 80 A, the OR-WE-517 meters are linked on one RS485 line with different Modbus addresses, and the manager pulls monthly per-tariff readings into the BMS without visiting each unit.

    Pros

    • MID certificate and class B – valid for billing
    • RS485 Modbus RTU as standard
    • 4 tariffs
    • Separate import and export registers
    • Full network parameters per phase
    • IP51 housing
    • Low own consumption – 0.4 W

    Cons / limitations

    • Max. 80 A – for higher currents choose the Eastron SDM630-MT (100 A) or a CT-operated meter (e.g. Eastron SDM630MCT-2T)
    • No wireless link – for Wi-Fi see the EL-TVPS3-80T
    • Tariff times can only be set via RS485
    • For 4-wire 3P+N systems only

    Safety and installation notes

    • Installation and wiring must be done by a qualified electrician with the supply isolated
    • Size cables and protection for the 80 A limit
    • Follow the phase and N wiring diagram in the manufacturer's manual
    • Run the RS485 line in twisted-pair cable with terminators at both ends
    • Fit the terminal covers and seal them if required

    Quick selection guide

    80 A direct
    MID, class B
    RS485 Modbus RTU
    4 tariffs, import/export
    Suitable when you need:
    • MID metering for billing
    • Remote reading via Modbus
    • Separate visibility of exported energy
    Check before use:
    • That the load does not exceed 80 A
    • That the network is 3×230/400 V with N
