  • Panel multifunction energy meter | 3-phase | 96x96 mm | CT operated | RS485 Modbus | MID | Eastron SMART X96-1

    Code: SMARTX96-1

    SMART X96-1 – three-phase multifunction energy meter and network analyser, mounted in the panel door in a standard 96 x 96 mm cut-out. Current is measured via external current transformers, so a single instrument suits both a 50 A incomer and one of several thousand amperes. Designed for substations, industrial distribution boards, business centres and solar-plant incomers, where more than kWh needs to be seen – voltages, currents, power and harmonics as well.

    Key idea:
    On an industrial incomer, a meter has to do two jobs at once – legally valid metering and power-quality monitoring. The SMART X96-1 is certified to MID EN 50470-1/3 class C (0.5%), so its readings are suitable for billing tenants or a supplier, while harmonic analysis up to the 63rd and RS485 Modbus allow the same instrument to be used as a BMS data source.
    Current input
    3 x 100 mA via external current transformers
    Voltage
    100–276 V (phase–neutral), 174–480 V (phase–phase)
    Communication
    RS485 Modbus RTU, 2 pulse outputs
    Certificate
    MID EN 50470-1/3, class C (0.5%)

    How it works

    The meter does not measure the load current directly – the conductor of each phase passes through a current transformer, which reduces the current proportionally to a secondary value of 100 mA. The CT ratio is entered in the meter's settings. Voltage is measured directly from the phases, and from the voltage and current the meter calculates active, reactive and apparent power, power factor, and sums energy separately in the import and export directions.

    Power supply is internal, taken from the metered phases, so no separate auxiliary source is required, and if one phase is lost the instrument continues to work. Data is output three ways: on the illuminated display, via two pulse outputs (for kWh/kVArh counting in an external system), and via RS485 Modbus RTU registers, from which a BMS, SCADA or PV monitoring system periodically reads instantaneous parameters and energy counters.

    What makes the SMART X96-1 worthwhile?
    A single instrument in the panel door replaces a separate billing meter, voltmeters, ammeters and a network analyser. 1P2W, 3P3W and 3P4W configurations are supported, and the current direction can be reversed in software, so CTs fitted the wrong way round (left/right) do not need to be physically swapped. The Max Demand function shows the highest power reached over a period – needed for negotiating permitted power and avoiding penalties for exceeding it.

    Key features

    • MID class C metering – active energy at class 0.5 accuracy, suitable for billing.
    • Bidirectional metering – separate import and export kWh and kVArh registers for solar installations.
    • Harmonic analysis – up to the 63rd harmonic for each phase, for power-quality assessment.
    • RS485 Modbus RTU – every parameter available to a BMS, SCADA or PV monitoring system.
    • Max Demand – records the highest power reached over a period, for controlling permitted power.
    • "EasyClick" connector and software direction reversal – fast installation, CTs can be fitted on either side.

    Where is it used?

    • Substations and main distribution boards at industrial sites
    • Energy metering and load analysis for production lines and shops
    • Business centres and retail chains with billing metering for tenants
    • Solar and wind plant incomers – analysis of import/export flows
    • Distribution and monitoring systems for energy companies

    Use by need

    For the domestic user.
    For a home distribution board this is more than is needed – a modular DIN meter is more suitable here. The SMART X96-1 makes sense in a larger private property with a powerful incomer or a solar installation, where the meter is to be seen in the panel door and transmitted via Modbus into home automation.
    For businesses and industry.
    The main purpose: a single instrument carries out MID metering for tenants or shops while also showing where harmonics, imbalance or a low power factor appear in the network. Max Demand data allows permitted power to be negotiated on a sound basis.
    For electricians / engineers.
    Select CTs with a 100 mA secondary current and a suitable primary value, check the voltage range (phase–neutral up to 276 V), and plan the RS485 bus and Modbus address. A CT direction error can be corrected in the settings, and the configuration (3P4W/3P3W) selected in software.

    Practical example

    In the 630 kVA substation of a business centre, a SMART X96-1 is installed in the panel door with 1000/0.1 A current transformers. The BMS reads three-phase currents, power and Max Demand via Modbus every 60 s. It turns out that current on the third phase reaches 720 A at peak, the others around 550 A, and the 5th harmonic exceeds 8%. After the loads were rebalanced, Max Demand fell, and the MID readings continue to be used for billing.

    Pros

    • Billing metering – MID class C (0.5%) to EN 50470-1/3.
    • Analyser functionality – harmonics up to the 63rd, power factor, Max Demand.
    • Versatile for any incomer – via CT, suits any current, 1P2W/3P3W/3P4W configurations.
    • No auxiliary supply needed – internal three-phase power, works with a phase lost.
    • Fast installation – "EasyClick" connector and software CT direction reversal.
    • Environmentally robust – 30g shock / 2g vibration, up to 3000 m altitude.

    Cons / limitations

    • Current transformers are not included – they must be selected and purchased separately.
    • IP51 is indoor use only; an outdoor board must provide protection against moisture.
    • RS485 only – integration into the cloud or an Ethernet network requires a Modbus RTU/TCP converter.
    • Panel mounting requires a cut-out in the panel door – it is not a DIN-rail version.
    • The settings (CT ratio, configuration, Modbus parameters) require technical preparation.

    Safety and installation notes

    • Install only with the voltage switched off; never leave a CT secondary circuit open while current is flowing in the primary.
    • Protect the voltage-measuring circuits with separate low-current fuses per the manufacturer's datasheet.
    • Check the CT direction (P1 on the grid side) and phase correspondence between the current and voltage inputs – otherwise power will be negative or distorted.
    • Use a screened twisted-pair cable for the RS485 bus, earth the screen at one end, and fit terminating resistors at both ends.
    • For billing metering the instrument must keep an unbroken MID seal and a properly recorded CT ratio.
    • Observe an operating temperature of -25…+55 °C and indoor conditions (IP51).

    Suitable when you need:
    • MID billing metering on a high-current incomer via CT;
    • a meter in the panel door with harmonic and Max Demand analysis;
    • a Modbus RTU data source for a BMS, SCADA or PV monitoring system.
    Check before use:
    • whether the CT secondary current is 100 mA and the ratio has been entered in the settings;
    • whether the voltage stays within 276 V phase–neutral / 480 V phase–phase;
    • whether there is room in the panel door for a 96 x 96 mm cut-out and a 74 mm depth;
    • whether the RS485 bus has been planned with unique Modbus addresses.
    Important reminder:
    The meter measures and records, but does not protect the circuit – overload, short-circuit and surge protection is provided by separate devices. Without an RS485 connection it remains only a local display – plan a bus or a converter for remote monitoring.

    FAQ

    Can it be connected directly without current transformers?
    No – the current input is designed for a 100 mA secondary CT current; direct connection would damage the instrument.
    Is it suitable for billing with tenants?
    Yes, the meter is certified to MID EN 50470-1/3 class C, so the readings are suitable for billing metering.
    Does it meter the export from a solar installation?
    Yes – imported and exported active and reactive energy are recorded separately.
    Is a separate power supply needed?
    No, the meter is powered from the metered phases and continues to work even if one of them is lost.
    How is data sent to the cloud?
    Via RS485 Modbus RTU to a BMS, or via a Modbus RTU/TCP converter – the instrument has no Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
    What if the CTs are fitted the wrong way round?
    The current direction can be reversed in the settings in software – the CTs do not need to be rewired.
