Submersible hydrostatic liquid level sensor / level transmitter – RS485, DC 12–36 V, stainless steel probe
Submersible hydrostatic liquid level sensor / level transmitter for continuous level monitoring in tanks, reservoirs, wells and process systems. The probe is immersed in the liquid and measurement data is transmitted via a digital RS485 interface to a controller, PLC, display or other automation system.
This version is powered from DC 12–36 V. The probe is made of stainless steel and is intended for water, oil and other liquids compatible with the probe and sealing materials.
Important when selecting:
this product family may be available with different outputs such as 4–20 mA, 0–10 V and RS485. This description refers to the RS485 version. Measurement range, accuracy, RS485 protocol / register map, cable length and stainless-steel grade must be verified for the exact ordered version.Output

The transmitter is intended for applications requiring continuous digital level measurement. RS485 is particularly useful where the measured level must be integrated into a PLC, RTU, data logger, SCADA or remote monitoring system.
Typical tasks:- water level measurement in tanks and reservoirs;
- monitoring wells, process tanks and vessels;
- level monitoring of oil or other compatible liquids;
- pump control based on measured level;
- high / low level alarms implemented in the controller;
- transmission of level data to SCADA or remote monitoring systems;
- process level monitoring and data logging.
Operating principle
The immersed probe measures the hydrostatic pressure created by the liquid column. The higher the liquid level above the sensing element, the higher the hydrostatic pressure. Integrated electronics process this value and transmit level information through the RS485 interface.
Engineering note:
hydrostatic level measurement depends not only on liquid height but also on liquid density. If the measured medium differs significantly from water, or its density varies with temperature or concentration, the level conversion in the controller should be evaluated separately.Technical data

RS485 enables digital measurement transmission over longer distances than a typical 0–10 V analogue signal and is convenient for industrial automation integration. Before connection to a PLC or controller, the communication parameters of the exact model must be checked.
For RS485 design, verify:- RS485 A/B conductor assignment;
- communication protocol;
- device address;
- baud rate;
- parity, stop-bit and data-bit settings;
- register addresses and scaling of transmitted values;
- whether line-end termination resistors are required;
- shielding and grounding concept.
RS485 ≠ automatically Modbus RTU:
RS485 defines the physical communication layer, not the higher-level protocol. State “Modbus RTU” only when confirmed by the manufacturer's documentation for the exact version.Installation in a tank or reservoir
- The probe should be fully immersed in the measured liquid.
- Do not install directly in the impact zone of an incoming liquid stream.
- Avoid locations with strong turbulence, air bubbles or intensive mixing.
- The probe should not rest on the tank bottom if this can mechanically load the sensing element.
- Fix the cable so that its weight and tension are not transferred to the probe sealing assembly.
- If the cable contains an atmospheric-pressure compensation vent, keep the vent dry and unobstructed.
Do not select solely by liquid name:
actual suitability for oil, fuel, chemicals or aggressive liquids depends not only on the stainless-steel probe but also on the diaphragm, seals and cable jacket. Material compatibility must be checked for the specific medium.Power supply and EMC
The transmitter uses a 12–36 V DC supply. In industrial environments, use a stabilised DC power supply and route the sensor communication cable separately from variable-frequency drives, motors, contactors and other strong electromagnetic interference sources.
For the RS485 line:
in practice, a shielded twisted pair is recommended. Follow bus-topology principles and avoid long stubs. Shield connection and grounding should follow the EMC concept of the complete automation system.Selecting the measurement range
The hydrostatic transmitter range should be selected according to the maximum actual liquid column height, not only the geometric height of the tank. Consider:
- maximum operating level;
- possible overflow level;
- liquid density;
- probe installation height above the tank bottom;
- required measurement reserve;
- level scaling used in the controller.
An unnecessarily large range reduces practical resolution:
if a transmitter with a much larger range is used for a low tank, only part of its measurement span is utilised. Select a range close to the actual process level while retaining a reasonable safety margin.Use according to application
Water systemsFor tanks, wells, reservoirs and process-water level measurement.
Industrial automationFor level monitoring, alarms and process control in PLC / SCADA systems.
Pump controlFor automatic pump start/stop or multi-level control logic in a controller.
Remote monitoringFor transmitting level data to remote controllers, telemetry devices or data loggers.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Is RS485 an analogue output?
No. RS485 is a digital communication interface. 4–20 mA and 0–10 V are examples of analogue outputs.Is DC 12–36 V the output signal?
No. DC 12–36 V is the sensor supply voltage. Measurement data in this version is transmitted through RS485.Can it be used in oil?
Only if the specific oil is compatible with all wetted probe, sealing and cable materials. A stainless-steel body alone does not confirm chemical compatibility.Does RS485 mean the sensor uses Modbus RTU?
Not necessarily. RS485 is the physical interface. The actual protocol must be verified in the manufacturer's documentation.Can the probe simply be dropped onto the bottom of a tank?
It is better to install it so the probe is not mechanically loaded, does not rest on the bottom, and is not directly exposed to strong inflow or turbulence.RS485 level measurement for industrial automation
