DIN-rail voltage monitoring relay | 40 A | 230 V | 8.8 kVA | DIN | Tomzn VPD1-60
VPD1-60 is a DIN-rail voltage monitoring relay, mounted on a 35 mm DIN rail in an electrical distribution panel. It continuously monitors the 230 V AC mains voltage and, if it rises above or falls below the permitted limits, automatically disconnects the load from the mains; once the voltage stabilises, it reconnects power after a set delay. Used in domestic and low-power industrial panels where equipment needs protection from overvoltage and undervoltage.
Main point:
In rural or older infrastructure networks, voltage is unstable – there are both overvoltage spikes and prolonged voltage drops, and both modes gradually damage household appliances, refrigerators, pumps and electronics' power supplies. A separate surge arrester only suppresses short impulses and offers no protection from low voltage. VPD1-60 addresses both cases with one module: when the voltage moves outside the 175–270 V range, the relay disconnects the circuit in under 1 s, protecting equipment from prolonged exposure that fuses or circuit breakers do not detect.Rated current
40 ARated voltage
230 V±10%, 50/60 HzMax. connected load
8.8 kVAMounting
35 mm DIN railOperating principle
The relay is connected in series into the phase conductor between the main circuit breaker and the protected circuit. The device continuously measures the mains voltage: as long as it stays within 175–270 VAC, the contacts remain closed and power flows uninterrupted. If the voltage exceeds 270 VAC±5 V (overvoltage) or falls below 170 VAC±5 V (undervoltage), the internal logic trips and disconnects the circuit in under 1 second – the indicator changes from green to red.
After disconnecting the circuit, the relay keeps monitoring the mains voltage but does not restore power immediately, even if the voltage instantly returns to normal – this avoids repeated chattering during unstable voltage. Once the voltage becomes normal again, power is restored after a delay of up to 60 s, and on first connecting the product you need to wait about 1 minute for the red light to go out before the device starts operating.
What makes VPD1-60 useful?
The module works autonomously, with no settings and no external control – it just needs to be mounted on the DIN rail and connected to the phase. It protects an entire circuit or an entire flat from a single point, and automatic restoration after the delay means that power returns by itself after a brief mains disturbance, without human intervention.Technical specifications
Model VPD1-60 Product type DIN-rail voltage monitoring relay Rated current 40 A Rated voltage 230 V±10%, 50/60 Hz Max. connected load 8.8 kVA Overvoltage trip threshold >270 VAC±5 V Normal voltage range 175–270 VAC Undervoltage trip threshold <170 VAC±5 V Disconnection time < 1 s Power restoration delay < 60 s Own power consumption < 2 W Service life 100,000 cycles Dimensions (W x H x D) 35 x 70 x 77 mm Mounting 35 mm DIN rail Key features
- Overvoltage protection – disconnects the circuit when voltage exceeds 270 VAC±5 V.
- Undervoltage protection – disconnects the circuit when voltage falls below 170 VAC±5 V.
- Fast tripping – disconnects in under 1 second from the threshold being exceeded.
- Automatic restoration – switches power back on by itself once voltage returns to normal, after a delay of up to 60 s.
- Indication – green indicator shows normal status, red shows a trip.
- Low own consumption – consumes less than 2 W, operates continuously with negligible energy loss.
Where is it used?
- Incoming electrical panels of flats and houses with unstable mains supply
- Rural locations and grid-edge sites with frequent voltage fluctuations
- Power circuits of refrigerators, washing machines and other household appliances
- Electrical circuits of water pumps and well pump stations
- Small shops, warehouses and offices with sensitive electronics
- Electrical installations of summer houses and garden cabins
- Power lines for servers, routers and other communications equipment
- Separate circuits for air conditioners and heating appliances
Use by need
For home users.
If the mains experiences voltage spikes or drops, VPD1-60 is installed at the flat or house incomer and protects the entire installation and the appliances connected to it, without a separate protection device for each appliance.For businesses and industry.
In low-power sites (up to 8.8 kVA), the relay lets you isolate critical circuits – refrigeration, ventilation or IT equipment – from mains disturbances, reducing the risk of failures and downtime.For electricians / engineers.
Before installation, check that the circuit load does not exceed 40 A and 8.8 kVA, and that there is space on the panel's 35 mm DIN rail for the module. Explain to the customer the roughly 1-minute delay on first power-up and the up-to-60-s automatic restoration logic, so it is not mistaken for a fault.Practical application
In a rural homestead where the utility's network often shows voltage spikes above 270 V in the evenings, VPD1-60 is installed right after the main circuit breaker, ahead of the refrigerator and pump circuit. When an overvoltage occurs, the relay disconnects power in under 1 second, protecting the compressors from damage; once the voltage stabilises, power is automatically restored within up to 60 seconds, with no action needed from the owner.
Pros
- Dual protection – against both overvoltage and undervoltage in one module.
- Automatic operation – no need to manually restore power after a trip.
- Fast response – disconnects the circuit in under 1 s.
- Compact – 35×70×77 mm housing, fits a standard panel.
- Clear indication – status visible at a glance by colour.
- Long service life – 100,000 switching cycles.
Cons / limitations
- Rated current limited to 40 A – not suitable for higher-load circuits without a separate tap-off.
- Fixed trip thresholds – cannot be adjusted by the user.
- After a trip, power is restored only automatically, with a delay of up to 60 s – not intended for quick manual switching.
- On first connection, you need to wait about 1 minute before the device starts operating.
- Does not protect against short-circuit or overload current – that is handled by a separate circuit breaker.
Safety and installation notes
- Install only on a 35 mm DIN rail, inside an electrical panel, not in a damp environment.
- Connect the relay in series in the phase circuit after the main circuit breaker, following the manufacturer's terminal diagram.
- Before installation, disconnect the panel's power supply and confirm there is no voltage present.
- Do not use in circuits whose load exceeds 40 A or 8.8 kVA.
- After first connection, wait until the red indicator goes out before treating the device as operational.
- This relay does not replace a separate circuit breaker against short circuit and overload – use it together with one.
Quick selection guide

230 V±10%, 50/60 HzMax. connected load
8.8 kVAMounting
35 mm DIN railSuitable when you need to:- protect a flat, house or small site circuit from overvoltage and undervoltage;
- automatically restore power without human intervention;
- a compact DIN module for loads up to 40 A / 8.8 kVA.
Check before use:- whether the circuit current does not exceed 40 A and power does not exceed 8.8 kVA;
- whether there is free space on the panel's DIN rail;
- whether the circuit also needs a separate short-circuit protection breaker;
- whether the customer has been informed about the first-startup and restoration delays.
Important reminder:
VPD1-60 protects against overvoltage and undervoltage, but not against short-circuit or overload current – that requires a separate circuit breaker.FAQ
What current and power can the relay carry?
Up to 40 A and 8.8 kVA rated load.How quickly does the relay disconnect the circuit when voltage is disturbed?
In under 1 second from the threshold being exceeded.Is power restored automatically?
Yes, once the voltage becomes normal again, power switches on automatically within up to 60 seconds.Why doesn't the device work immediately after first connection?
On first connection you need to wait about 1 minute for the red light to go out – this is a normal startup cycle.Does the relay protect against short circuit?
No, it reacts only to overvoltage and undervoltage; a separate circuit breaker is required for short-circuit and overload protection.What voltage range is considered normal?
175–270 VAC; outside this range, the protection trips.DIN-rail voltage monitoring relay | 40 A
