  • Modular multifunction energy meter | 3-phase | CT operated | 1 tariff | RS485 Modbus | MID | DIN | Eastron SDM630MCT-ML-1

    SDM630MCT-ML-1 – three-phase multifunction energy meter on a DIN rail, CT operated with a 100 mA / 100 mV secondary output. A single compact instrument meters one three-phase (3P4W) circuit or three single-phase (1P2W) circuits, and presents all the data over a single Modbus address. Designed for distribution boards where MID metering via CT is required, apartment blocks, commercial buildings and metering for solar installations.

    Key idea:
    When a distribution board needs to meter a three-phase line or three single-phase consumers, and there is no wish to route load currents through the meter, the SDM630MCT-ML-1 does this in a single narrow housing: metering via small CTs, a single Modbus device as far as the BMS is concerned, and "EasyClick" CT connectors that remove the most common mistake – reversed current-circuit polarity. Three single-phase flats no longer need three separate meters and three RS485 addresses.
    Current input
    100 mA / 100 mV via current transformers
    Rated voltage
    3 x 230/400 V AC (80–120% Un)
    Communication / tariffs
    RS485 Modbus RTU (addresses 1–247), 1 tariff
    Mounting / certificate
    DIN rail (DIN 43880), MID (EN 50470-1/3)

    How it works

    The load current does not flow through the meter – the phase conductors of the metered line pass through small current transformers, whose secondary output (100 mA or 100 mV) is connected to the instrument via an "EasyClick" connector. Voltage is measured directly from the 3 x 230/400 V busbar, and from the currents and voltages the meter calculates power, power factor and THD, and sums the imported and exported energy. Depending on the configured scheme, the three CTs meter either one three-phase (3P4W) circuit or three separate single-phase (1P2W) circuits.

    The instrument is powered from an auxiliary supply (85–276 V AC or 120–380 V DC), so measurement does not depend on the state of the load circuit. Data is available on the LCD display, via an LED pulse output of 3200 pulses/kWh, and via RS485 Modbus RTU. All registers are read over a single address, so a BMS or PV monitoring system obtains the data for the three-phase system or all three single-phase circuits in a single polling cycle. A version with Ethernet and Modbus TCP is a separate model, the SDM630MCT-ML-TCP.

    What makes the SDM630MCT-ML-1 worthwhile?
    It reduces board space, cable volume and integration work: load cables do not need to be routed through the meter, and three single-phase consumers, which would otherwise need three meters and three Modbus addresses, need only one 71 mm-wide instrument. The current direction can be reversed in software, so CTs fitted on either the left or right side will work without rewiring. MID approval to EN 50470-1/3 means the readings are suitable for billing, not just informational monitoring.

    Key features

    • Flexible metering scheme – one three-phase (3P4W) or three single-phase (1P2W) circuits in a single housing.
    • Single Modbus address – every register accessible over one RS485 interface.
    • Full parameter set – V, A, Hz, P/Q/S, PF, maximum load, voltage and current THD.
    • Bidirectional energy – import, export and total active and reactive energy.
    • "EasyClick" CT connectors – up to 90% less installation work and a lower risk of wiring errors.
    • Software current-direction reversal – CTs can be fitted on either side.

    Where is it used?

    • Apartment blocks – metering of three single-phase flats from one meter in a single distribution board
    • Office and shopping-centre boards with tenant metering via CT
    • Production facilities – energy metering for individual lines and shops
    • Solar installations – monitoring of generation, self-consumption and export flows
    • Distribution boards where routing load cables through the meter is inconvenient
    • Electrical-network monitoring and load-balancing projects

    Use by need

    For the domestic user.
    For a home with a three-phase incomer, this is metering without rerouting the load cables – the CTs simply clamp around the phases. If you want to see three single-phase circuits separately (e.g. a heat pump, an EV charger and general household use), the 3 x 1P2W mode is suitable, but you will need an RS485 connection to the home automation system, since without one you will only see the display.
    For businesses and industry.
    The main scenario is metering and cost allocation for tenants or departments. MID approval allows the readings to be used for billing, while the THD and maximum-load data help spot overloaded lines before the protection trips.
    For electricians / engineers.
    Select CTs with a 100 mA or 100 mV secondary output, plan the auxiliary supply (85–276 V AC), the RS485 bus and a single Modbus address. Enter the CT ratios and the scheme (1 x 3P4W or 3 x 1P2W) in the settings. Direction errors can be corrected in software.

    Practical example

    In the stairwell distribution board of an apartment block, three single-phase flats are supplied, each via a 40 A line. Instead of three meters, a single SDM630MCT-ML-1 is installed in 3 x 1P2W mode with three "EasyClick" CTs (100 A primary current). The administrator reads each flat's kWh over a single RS485 address every 15 minutes, and at month end bills are drawn up from the MID metering data. The load cables were left untouched, and installation took about an hour instead of half a day.

    Pros

    • Three single-phase meters in one – 1 x 3P4W or 3 x 1P2W circuits in a 71 mm-wide housing.
    • Single Modbus address – simpler BMS integration and a shorter bus.
    • MID approval – readings suitable for billing metering.
    • Fast installation – "EasyClick" connectors, fewer wires and errors.
    • Analysis data – THD, PF, maximum load for each circuit.
    • Universal power supply – 85–276 V AC or 120–380 V DC auxiliary input.

    Cons / limitations

    • Current transformers are not included – they must be selected to match each line's current.
    • Single-tariff metering only – day/night tariff systems need a different model.
    • An auxiliary supply is required – without it the meter does not operate.
    • One instrument is not enough for several three-phase circuits – the multi-channel SDM630MCT-ML-4 is designed for that.
    • Without RS485 or a monitoring system, only a small part of the functionality is used; IP51 is indoor use only.

    Safety and installation notes

    • Carry out work with the voltage switched off; CAT III category allows installation in distribution boards.
    • Protect the voltage-measuring and auxiliary-supply circuits with low-current fuses per the manufacturer's datasheet.
    • Assign the correct CT ratio and phase sequence – mixing up phases will give an incorrect power reading.
    • Follow the CT direction marking, or correct the direction in software before commissioning the meter.
    • Use a screened twisted-pair cable with termination at both ends for the RS485 bus.
    • Operate at -25…+55 °C in a dry location (IP51, ≤ 90% humidity, non-condensing).

    Quick selection guide

    Current input
    100 mA / 100 mV via current transformers
    Rated voltage
    3 x 230/400 V AC (80–120% Un)
    Communication / tariffs
    RS485 Modbus RTU (addresses 1–247), 1 tariff
    Mounting / certificate
    DIN rail (DIN 43880), MID (EN 50470-1/3)
    Suitable when you need:
    • to meter one three-phase or three single-phase circuits via CT from a single distribution board;
    • MID metering for tenants or departments with Modbus integration;
    • to save board space and installation time.
    Check before use:
    • whether the CT secondary output is 100 mA or 100 mV;
    • whether an 85–276 V AC auxiliary supply is available;
    • whether single-tariff metering is sufficient;
    • whether the RS485 bus and Modbus address have been planned.
    Important reminder:
    The meter does not protect the circuits – separate protective devices are required for each line. Metering via CT and a single Modbus address does not mean the instrument replaces a BMS – it only provides the data.

    FAQ

    How many circuits can one meter handle?
    One three-phase (3P4W) or three single-phase (1P2W) circuits. For several three-phase channels, the SDM630MCT-ML-4 model is designed for that.
