    Key idea:
    A building's or a factory's energy consumption can only be managed once it is measured at the individual circuits, not only at the incomer. The iEM3150 combines three things often missing from cheap meters: direct connection up to 63 A without current transformers, a universal 100–480 V voltage range, and a standard Modbus RS485 port through which readings are fed automatically into SCADA, a BMS or an energy-management application. It is a single-tariff meter for internal metering and monitoring, not billing metering with the grid operator – the A9MEM3150 has no MID approval; the MID version with Modbus is the A9MEM3155.

    How it works

    The meter is connected directly into the circuit being measured: the phase conductors pass through the meter's current terminals, and voltage is measured from the same terminals. The electronic measuring unit takes instantaneous current and voltage values, calculates active power from them and accumulates energy in a kWh register with a capacity of up to 99,999,999.9 kWh. Readings are shown on the LCD display, and the same register is read out via the RS485 port using the Modbus protocol.

    Direct connection means that current up to 63 A flows through the meter itself – no current transformers are needed, no CT-ratio configuration errors, and no additional terminals. There is one limitation: this arrangement is suitable only for circuits up to 63 A. Higher loads require the same Acti9 iEM3000-family model with CT measurement (…/5 A or …/1 A). The meter works in 3P, 3P+N and 1P+N networks at 50 Hz and 60 Hz.

    What makes the A9MEM3150 worthwhile?
    It turns an ordinary meter into a data source: with one RS485 cable, dozens of such meters in a board can be read out for every tenant's or workshop's consumption every hour, with no need for site visits or manual transcription. It is also certified as a sub-meter to ANSI C12.20, EAC and NMI M 6-1, so it is also suitable for internal cost allocation between departments.

    Key features

    • Active energy metering – cumulative kWh register up to 99,999,999.9 kWh, without overflow over the whole service life.
    • Direct connection up to 63 A – the cable connects straight into the meter, no CT and no ratio configuration.
    • RS485 Modbus port – readings can be read out into a BMS, SCADA, PLC or energy-management application.
    • Universal 100–480 V voltage – the same model for a 230/400 V network and for 1P+N or 3P without neutral arrangements.
    • LCD display – local readings visible without any communication infrastructure.
    • Sub-meter certifications – ANSI C12.20, EAC and NMI M 6-1 approval for internal metering and cost allocation.

    Where is it used?

    • Metering electricity consumption of tenants in offices and shopping centres
    • Monitoring energy consumption of production workshops and equipment lines
    • Building management systems (BMS) with a Modbus RS485 bus
    • Power circuits of data centre and server-room racks up to 63 A
    • Metering electric-vehicle charging stations on separate circuits
    • Consumption measurement for heat pumps, ventilation and cooling equipment
    • Energy-audit and ISO 50001 monitoring points in distribution boards
    • Metering of shared areas and lift circuits in apartment blocks

    Use by need

    For the domestic user.
    For a house or holiday home with a 63 A supply, this offers the possibility of separately metering a heat pump, an EV charger or a sauna. The Modbus port lets readings be passed to a smart-home controller – but billing with the supplier still requires only the grid operator's official meter.
    For businesses and industry.
    Dozens of iEM3150 units in boards and a single RS485 bus give a complete picture of energy costs by workshop, line or tenant. Readings are fed automatically into the energy-management application, and costs are allocated according to real, not estimated, data.
    For electricians / engineers.
    Before selecting, check that the circuit's protective device is no larger than 63 A, that the cable fits the 16 mm² terminals, and that the RS485 bus is designed with end-of-line resistors and unique Modbus addresses. The meter is DIN rail mounted and is 90 mm wide – plan for space in the board.

    Practical example

    In an office building with 12 tenants, each supply is protected by a 40–63 A breaker. In each tenant's section of the board, one A9MEM3150 is installed on direct connection; all 12 are linked by a single RS485 line with unique Modbus addresses 1–12 and read out by a BMS controller. Every month the administrator gets a kWh report from the system for each tenant without a site visit, and each tenant can see their own readings on the meter's LCD display.

    Pros

    • Standard Modbus RS485 – integrates into any BMS or SCADA without manufacturer-specific software.
    • No current transformers – cheaper and simpler installation for circuits up to 63 A.
    • Wide voltage range – one model for 1P+N, 3P and 3P+N networks.
    • Compact DIN housing – 90 mm wide, fits a standard distribution board.
    • International approvals – CE, cULus, EAC, RCM, so it is suitable for exported boards.
    • Large register – 99,999,999.9 kWh, no need to worry about overflow.

    Cons / limitations

    • Up to 63 A only – larger circuits require the CT version (iEM3155/iEM3255 or an equivalent).
    • No MID approval – for billing metering choose the MID version A9MEM3155.
    • No pulse output or digital inputs – RS485 communication only.
    • Single-tariff metering – multi-tariff metering is not supported.
    • IP20 enclosure – to be installed only inside a board.

    Safety and installation notes

    • Install only with the voltage disconnected and the circuit confirmed dead; work must be carried out by a qualified electrician.
    • The meter does not protect the circuit – a circuit breaker no larger than 63 A is required upstream of it.
    • Terminals up to 16 mm² – choose the cable cross-section according to the 63 A load and installation conditions.
    • Use shielded twisted-pair cable for the RS485 bus, fit 120 Ω resistors at the ends, and observe A/B polarity.
    • Assign a unique Modbus address to each meter on the bus, and match the baud rate and parity with the controller.
    • The device is rated for overvoltage category III and pollution degree 2 – use an IP-rated enclosure in an unprotected environment.

    Suitable when you need:
    • to meter a circuit up to 63 A without current transformers;
    • to pass kWh readings to a BMS, SCADA or energy-management system via Modbus RS485;
    • internal metering or tenant cost allocation, rather than billing metering.
    Check before use:
    • whether the circuit protection does not exceed 63 A;
    • whether the network voltage falls within the 100–277 V / 173–480 V range;
    • whether the controller supports Modbus RTU over RS485;
    • whether the MID version (A9MEM3155) is needed for billing, and whether single-tariff metering is sufficient.
    Important reminder:
    The meter measures and transmits energy data but does not perform a protective function – protection against overload, short circuit and earth leakage is provided by devices installed upstream of it.

    FAQ

    Are current transformers needed?
    No – up to 63 A the meter is connected directly. For higher currents choose the CT version.
    Is it suitable for billing with the electricity supplier?
    Official billing metering is carried out by the grid operator's meter. The iEM3150 has no MID approval and is intended for internal metering; if MID metering with Modbus is required, choose the A9MEM3155.
    What protocol does it support?
    Modbus RTU over the RS485 port – supported by most BMS, SCADA and PLC controllers.
    Does it work in a single-phase network?
    Yes, the 1P+N arrangement is supported, as well as 3P and 3P+N.
    How many meters can be linked on one RS485 line?
    A standard RS485 bus allows up to 32 devices without a repeater; the exact number depends on the controller and cable length.
    Is there a pulse output?
    No – the source states 0 inputs and 0 outputs, data is transmitted only via Modbus.
    Does it support day/night tariffs?
    No – the iEM3150 is a single-tariff meter, multi-tariff metering is not supported.
