  • Modular three-phase multifunction energy meter | via current transformers 1/5 A | 3×230/400 V | bidirectional | RS485 Modbus | DIN | Eastron SDM630MCT

    Code: SDM630MCT

Three-phase multifunction meter connected via 1 A or 5 A current transformers. It measures energy in both directions, THD and demand, and transmits data via RS485 Modbus RTU.

  • Modular three-phase multifunction energy meter | via current transformers 1/5 A | 3×230/400 V | bidirectional | RS485 Modbus | DIN | Eastron SDM630MCT

The Eastron SDM630MCT is a 4-module DIN meter for 3×230/400 V networks, connected via current transformers with 1 A or 5 A secondary. It is intended for incomers and feeders where current exceeds the limits of direct-connected meters.

    Key point:
One device replaces a kWh meter and a basic network analyser: it measures active and reactive energy in both directions, voltages, currents, powers, PF, THD and demand. The CT ratio is programmable, so readings are shown directly in primary values. RS485 Modbus and two pulse outputs make the data usable in automation.

    Bidirectional metering
Yes. The meter records imported and exported active (kWh) and reactive (kVArh) energy separately: it measures energy imported from and exported to the grid. Compatibility with inverter power / export control must be confirmed separately – bidirectional metering alone is not enough.

    Communication interfaces and integration

    RS485 Modbus RTU
All measured values are sent to SCADA, BMS, PLC, energy management systems or a solar inverter; 2400–38400 bps, up to 247 addresses per line.
    Pulse output No. 1
Configurable for kWh or kVArh pulses – for a data logger or existing pulse-based metering.
    Pulse output No. 2
Fixed 3200 imp/kWh for total active energy – a Modbus-independent signal for a PLC counter.

    Operating principle

Mounted on a 35 mm DIN rail; voltage circuits are connected directly, currents via three 1 A or 5 A current transformers. 1P2W, 3P3W and 3P4W systems are supported.

The CT ratio and secondary current are entered in setup; the meter measures all values and accumulates energy in separate import and export registers.

Values are shown on the backlit LCD and transmitted via RS485 Modbus RTU and two pulse outputs – to a controller, SCADA or inverter.

    Why choose the Eastron SDM630MCT?
It lets you meter a high-current incomer with a compact 4-module device while also getting power-quality data (THD, PF, demand) that a basic kWh meter lacks. The selectable 1 A or 5 A secondary lets you reuse existing transformers.

    Main functions

    • 1 A / 5 A CT connection – for high-current incomers and feeders.
    • Bidirectional metering – import / export kWh and kVArh.
    • Network parameters – V, A, W, var, VA, PF, Hz, THD and demand.
    • RS485 Modbus RTU – data to SCADA, BMS or inverter.
    • 2 pulse outputs – one configurable, one fixed 3200 imp/kWh.
    • Programmable CT ratio – readings in primary values.

How does it differ from similar models?

Eastron SDM630MCT-2T Same CT platform but with 2 tariffs and MID; choose it for tariff or billing metering.
Eastron SDM630MCT-ML-1 Also CT-connected with RS485 Modbus and 1 tariff, but with confirmed MID.
Eastron SMART X96-1 Panel-mounted 96×96 mm meter for enclosure doors; the SDM630MCT mounts on a DIN rail inside the panel.
Eastron SDM630-MT Direct connection up to 100 A (no CT) with 4 tariffs; the SDM630MCT is for higher currents via current transformers.

    Where is it used?

    • Building and factory incomers above 100 A
    • Solar PV incomer metering and export control (if the inverter supports the meter)
    • Distribution boards with several high-power feeders
    • Building management systems (BMS) and SCADA
    • Compressor, refrigeration and ventilation plants
    • Metering of EV charging station groups
    • Upgrading existing CT circuits

    Use by requirement

    For installers.
One 4-module device with 1 A or 5 A input fits most existing transformers.
    For energy engineers.
Bidirectional energy, THD and demand over a single Modbus interface.
    For solar PV integrators.
Incomer measurement for export limitation and self-consumption analysis.

    Practical use

If a factory's 400 A incomer already has 400/5 A current transformers and the energy engineer wants to see power, reactive energy and THD in the system, install an SDM630MCT, set 5 A secondary and a 400/5 ratio – the data then goes straight to SCADA via Modbus in primary values.

    Pros

    • Suitable for high currents via 1 A or 5 A transformers
    • Bidirectional active and reactive energy metering
    • THD, PF and demand measurement
    • RS485 Modbus RTU up to 38400 bps
    • 2 pulse outputs
    • Compact – 4 modules (72 mm)

    Cons / limitations

    • MID is not confirmed for this item – for billing choose the SDM630MCT-ML-1 or SDM630MCT-2T.
    • Requires separate current transformers – up to 100 A a direct SDM630-MT or SDM72D-M-MID is simpler.
    • Single tariff only – for tariff metering choose the SDM630MCT-2T.
    • No wireless link – an RS485 cable or gateway is required.

    Safety and installation notes

    • Installation only by a qualified electrician with the power disconnected.
    • Never open a CT secondary circuit under load – short it before disconnecting the meter.
    • Protect the voltage circuits with fuses according to the manufacturer's diagram.
    • Observe phase order and CT orientation (P1 / P2, S1 / S2) – errors distort power and direction readings.
    • Run the RS485 line in twisted-pair cable with 120 Ω termination at both ends.
    • The IP51 housing is for indoor use.

    Quick selection guide

    1 A / 5 A CT

    Suitable when you need:
    • Metering above 100 A via current transformers
    • Energy direction, THD and demand data
    • Integration via Modbus RTU
    Check before use:
    • The CT secondary current (1 A or 5 A) and ratio
    • Whether MID is required for billing
    • Whether the controller supports Eastron SDM630 Modbus registers
Important reminder: The meter does not replace current transformers, circuit breakers or protection relays – transformers are purchased separately to match the incomer current.
