    Key idea:
    This is a monitoring-class device – its purpose is to give an engineer or owner an accurate (Class 0.5) picture of where and when electricity is being used. MID approval is not stated for it (do not use it as an MID meter for billing metering), and it has no tariff registers, so it costs less than billing models, while precisely answering the question "what is my load right now, and how much did it consume over the day". The Modbus RTU interface lets the same data be continuously collected into a SCADA or BMS system.

    How it works

    The TD50DSS is connected directly into a three-phase supply or sub-circuit: current flows through internal measuring circuits, voltage is taken from the same terminals, so external current transformers are not required. The measuring unit continuously calculates instantaneous power and integrates it into an energy register with a capacity of up to 9,999,999.9 kWh – a range sufficient for a heavily used industrial site for many years.

    Results are shown on a digital LED display and are simultaneously available over the RS485 bus via the Modbus RTU protocol. The meter operates as a Modbus slave device: a controller or data logger periodically polls the registers and receives power and energy values. Since an RS485 bus can carry dozens of such devices, a single cable can cover monitoring for an entire board or building.

    What makes the TD50DSS worthwhile?
    It fills the gap between a simple kWh meter and an expensive network analyser: you see real power and accumulated energy at Class 0.5 accuracy, get a standard Modbus RTU output, and fit it all into a 100 x 72 x 66 mm DIN housing. It's the best option when you need many measuring points at a sensible price.

    Key features

    • Real-time power monitoring – instantaneous load is visible on the display and via Modbus, not just accumulated kWh.
    • Class 0.5 energy metering – accuracy sufficient for energy audits and cost analysis.
    • RS485 Modbus RTU – a standard industrial protocol, compatible with PLC, SCADA, BMS and IoT gateways.
    • Direct connection up to 100 A – suits most domestic and small commercial supplies without a CT.
    • Wide temperature range – from -25 to +55 °C, suitable for unheated cabinets and generator supplies.
    • Compact DIN housing – 100 x 72 x 66 mm, fits next to circuit breakers.

    Where is it used?

    • Power monitoring for industrial workshops and individual machines
    • Power monitoring for telecom sites and base stations
    • Load control on generators and backup supplies
    • Consumption analysis for homes and workshops with a three-phase supply
    • Internal sub-metering in commercial building distribution boards
    • IoT energy monitoring platforms with RS485 gateways
    • Cost tracking for heat pumps, compressors and ventilation equipment
    • Temporary and permanent measuring points for energy audits

    Use by need

    For the domestic user.
    In a house or workshop with a three-phase supply, the TD50DSS shows the real load when a heat pump, cooker and compressor run at the same time, and how many kWh per day each protected circuit consumes – a basis for deciding what to shift to off-peak hours or replace.
    For businesses and industry.
    When you need dozens of measuring points for production lines or tenants, a monitoring-class meter with Modbus RTU is the most cost-effective solution: data is collected centrally, while MID billing meters are kept only where invoices are actually issued.
    For electricians / engineers.
    Check three things: the sub-circuit current ≤ 100 A (otherwise use a CT-operated model), the network is three-phase (this model is not suitable for single-phase circuits), and the RS485 bus is designed with unique addresses and terminating resistors. Take the register map from the manufacturer's Modbus documentation.

    Practical example

    In a woodworking workshop, three machines and a compressor are fed from a single 63 A three-phase board. With a TD50DSS installed on each sub-circuit and all linked by one RS485 line to a data logger, within a week it becomes clear that the compressor, running on idle, uses around 4 kWh per day – 28 kWh per week – which can be eliminated with a simple time relay. Such a fix pays for itself within a few months, and the data remains in the SCADA archive for further analysis.

    Pros

    • Class 0.5 accuracy – reliable data for energy audits.
    • Modbus RTU – easy integration into any automation system.
    • Direct 100 A connection – no extra CTs and no CT errors.
    • Large register range – up to 9,999,999.9 kWh without overflow.
    • Environmentally rugged – operates from -25 to +55 °C.
    • Cost-effective – monitoring-class pricing for multi-point projects.

    Cons / limitations

    • MID not stated – do not use as an MID meter for billing metering; not suitable for billing tenants.
    • No tariff registers – does not split energy by time of day (for that, see the TD50MT).
    • Three-phase networks only – not used on single-phase circuits.
    • Digital LED display only – no graphical interface and no mechanical counter.
    • No built-in Wi-Fi or Ethernet – remote monitoring needs an RS485 gateway.

    Safety and installation notes

    • The meter is installed only with the supply switched off and the circuit confirmed dead.
    • A circuit breaker is required upstream of the meter – the measuring device does not perform a protective function.
    • Follow the manufacturer's wiring diagram: phase sequence and neutral connection determine the sign of the power and the correctness of the readings.
    • Route the RS485 cable separately from power cables, use screened twisted-pair cable and 120 Ω terminating resistors at the ends of the line.
    • Assign a unique Modbus address to each meter on the bus before connecting the cable.
    • Do not install directly above equipment that runs hot – keep within the operating temperature limits.

    Quick selection guide

    Maximum current
    100 A

    Communication
    RS485, Modbus RTU
    Accuracy class and mounting

    Suitable when you need:
    • real-time power and energy monitoring on a three-phase sub-circuit up to 100 A;
    • many measuring points on a single RS485 Modbus bus;
    • accurate data for an energy audit, without a billing-metering function.
    Check before use:
    • whether MID metering is not required (if it is, choose the TD50DS or TD50MMID);
    • whether tariffs are not required (if they are, choose the TD50MT);
    • whether the sub-circuit current does not exceed 100 A;
    • whether the network is genuinely three-phase.
    Important reminder:
    Data from a monitoring meter is intended for analysis and control – it cannot be used to invoice a tenant. If subletting with billing is planned for the site in future, choose the MID version from the outset.

    FAQ

    How does it differ from the TD50DS?
    The TD50DS has MID approval and is intended for billing; the TD50DSS is a monitoring device for which MID is not stated – do not use it as an MID meter for billing metering.
    Does the meter show instantaneous power?
    Yes – this is one of its core functions, with power visible on the display and via Modbus registers.
    Are current transformers needed?
    No, connection is direct up to 100 A.
    Can it be used on a single-phase circuit?
    No, the model is designed for three-phase networks.
    How many meters can be linked on one RS485 line?
    Several dozen, depending on the RS485 standard and gateway capability; each one needs a unique address.
    Is there Wi-Fi or an app?
    No – remote monitoring is implemented via an external RS485-to-Wi-Fi or RS485-to-Ethernet gateway.
