Modular three-phase energy meter | 100 A | 3×230/400 V | bidirectional | RS485 Modbus | MID | DIN | Eastron SDM72D-M-MID
The Eastron SDM72D-M-MID is a 4-module DIN meter for 3×230/400 V networks, connected directly up to 100 A. It measures active energy in both directions and transmits data via RS485 Modbus RTU.
Key point:
It is the simplest way to get MID-approved metering with Modbus without current transformers. One device provides accurate kWh readings and live values (V, A, W, PF, Hz) to a controller or inverter. Separate import and export registers make it usable wherever energy also flows back to the grid.Current

MID B+D⇄Bidirectional metering
Yes. The meter records imported and exported active energy (kWh) separately: it measures energy imported from and exported to the grid. Compatibility with inverter power / export control must be confirmed separately – bidirectional metering alone is not enough.Communication interfaces and integration
RS485 Modbus RTU
Remote reading into SCADA, BMS, PLC, Home Assistant or a solar inverter export-limiting system (if the inverter supports this meter); up to 247 addresses on one line.Pulse output
Default 1000 imp/kWh – energy pulses to a data logger, PLC counter input or an existing pulse collection system.Operating principle
Mounted on a 35 mm DIN rail and connected directly into a 3P4W or 1P2W circuit – no current transformers, up to 100 A.
The meter continuously measures voltage, current, power and power factor, and accumulates active energy in separate import and export registers.
Readings are shown on the backlit LCD and transmitted via RS485 Modbus RTU and the pulse output – usable for billing and automation alike.
Why choose the Eastron SDM72D-M-MID?
It combines the three things most often needed in sub-metering: 100 A direct connection, MID B+D approval and a Modbus interface. There is no need to choose between an “accurate” and a “smart” meter.Technical specifications

- Bidirectional metering – separate import and export kWh registers.
- RS485 Modbus RTU – data to SCADA, BMS, PLC or inverter.
- Pulse output – default 1000 imp/kWh for existing pulse systems.
- Live values – V, A, W, PF and Hz per phase.
- MID B+D – metering accuracy approved under 2014/32/EU.
- Direct 100 A connection – no current transformers.
How does it differ from similar models?
Eastron SDM72D-MID Same SDM72 platform but without RS485 – pulse output and total kWh only; the SDM72D-M-MID adds Modbus and separate import/export registers. Eastron SDM630-MT Also 100 A, Modbus and MID, but multifunction (more parameters) with 4 tariffs; the SDM72D-M-MID is simpler and more affordable when tariffs are not needed. THORGEON 01007 RS485 Modbus and MID with 2 tariffs, but maximum current 80 A; the SDM72D-M-MID handles up to 100 A direct. Schneider Acti9 iEM3150 Modbus and MID, but direct connection up to 63 A; the SDM72D-M-MID has a higher 100 A rating. Where is it used?
- Solar PV with export limitation (if the inverter supports the meter)
- Tenant and unit sub-metering
- EV charging points
- Building management systems (BMS)
- Consumption monitoring of production lines and machines
- Heat pumps and boiler rooms
- Home energy monitoring with Home Assistant
Use by requirement
For installers.
One 4-module device up to 100 A, no CTs, with a standard Modbus interface. For property managers.
MID-approved readings for splitting costs between tenants. For solar PV owners.
Clear view of consumption and energy fed into the grid.Practical use
If a commercial building has several rented units and bills must follow real consumption, install an SDM72D-M-MID for each unit and read all meters over one RS485 line into a central system – invoices are then based on MID-approved readings with no manual reading.Pros
- Direct connection up to 100 A
- MID B+D approval
- RS485 Modbus RTU and pulse output
- Separate import and export metering
- Compact – 4 modules (72 mm)
- Backlit LCD
- Low self-consumption – ≤ 2 W / 10 VA per phase
Cons / limitations
- Single tariff only – for multi-tariff metering choose the Eastron SDM630-MT.
- Not for currents above 100 A – then a CT meter is needed (e.g. Eastron SDM630MCT).
- No wireless link – Wi-Fi requires a separate gateway or a Wi-Fi model (e.g. EL-TVPS3-80T).
- Fewer parameters than the multifunction SDM630 (no THD, no demand).
Safety and installation notes
- Installation only by a qualified electrician with the power disconnected.
- Fit suitable upstream protection (MCB or fuses) sized for the cable cross-section.
- Follow the terminal markings: phase inputs/outputs and neutral must not be swapped.
- Run the RS485 line in twisted-pair cable with 120 Ω termination resistors at both ends.
- The IP51 housing is for indoor use – outdoors install only in a sealed enclosure.
Quick selection guide
100 A direct3×230/400 VRS485 Modbus RTUMID B+DSuitable when you need:- MID-approved metering with Modbus
- Separate measurement of energy imported from and exported to the grid
- Direct connection up to 100 A
Check before use:- That the load does not exceed 100 A
