  • Three-Phase Voltage and Phase Sequence Control Relay | 3x380VAC+N | DIN

Three-Phase Voltage and Phase Sequence Control Relay | 3x380V AC + N | Overvoltage, Undervoltage and Phase Sequence Protection

Three-phase voltage and phase sequence control relay – is a protection device designed to protect three-phase electrical networks and sensitive equipment connected to them against improper mains voltage and incorrect phase sequence. The relay monitors phase voltage and allows the lower and upper permissible voltage limits to be set. When the mains parameters are within the permitted range and the phase sequence is correct, the output relay is activated. If overvoltage, undervoltage, or an incorrect phase sequence is detected, the control contact switches to the protective state after the configured delay.

Three-phase network protection against voltage faults and incorrect phase sequence

The device allows the undervoltage protection threshold to be set from 260V to 360V AC and the overvoltage protection threshold from 400V to 460V AC. The trip delay is adjustable from 0.1 to 10 seconds. The relay also monitors the phase sequence and prevents the output from being activated if the phases are connected in the wrong sequence. Once the fault is cleared, the device automatically restores operation.

    Operating principle and functions

Function / Block Parameters / Modes Description / Purpose in the System
Undervoltage monitoring (U<) Adjustable 260 – 360V AC If the mains voltage drops below the set threshold, the relay switches off after the configured delay and protects the connected equipment.
Overvoltage monitoring (U>) Adjustable 400 – 460V AC If the mains voltage exceeds the set threshold, the relay output switches to the protective state after the configured delay.
Phase sequence monitoring 3-phase sequence monitoring The relay output is not activated if the L1, L2, and L3 phase sequence is incorrect.
Trip delay Adjustable 0.1 – 10s Helps prevent unnecessary relay operation caused by short-term mains voltage fluctuations.
Automatic reset Auto Reset When the mains parameters return to the permitted range and the phase sequence is correct, the device automatically restores relay operation.
LED indication LED indicators Provides visual information about the device and relay output status.

    How does the controller work?

    1. Connect the device to a three-phase 3x380V AC + N network according to the provided wiring diagram.
    2. Set the desired undervoltage protection threshold U< within the range of 260V to 360V AC.
    3. Set the desired overvoltage protection threshold U> within the range of 400V to 460V AC.
    4. Set the desired trip delay from 0.1 to 10 seconds.
    5. If the mains voltage parameters are within the set limits and the phase sequence is correct, the relay LED indicator lights up and the relay output is activated.
    6. If the voltage drops below the set U< threshold, rises above the U> threshold, or an incorrect phase sequence is detected, the relay output switches to the protective state.
    7. Once the fault is cleared and the mains parameters return to the permitted range, the relay automatically restores operation.
    Phase sequence protection

The device additionally monitors the phase sequence of the three-phase network. If phases L1, L2, and L3 are connected in the wrong sequence, the relay output is not activated. This function is particularly important for three-phase electric motors, pumps, compressors, and other equipment whose direction of rotation depends on the phase sequence.

    Voltage protection operation

When the monitored voltage is between the set U< and U> thresholds, the relay output remains active. If the voltage moves outside the set limits, the device begins counting the configured delay time. If the fault remains until the end of the delay, the relay switches off. Once the mains voltage returns to normal, the device automatically returns to the operating state.

    Relay contact states

    Relay state Contact state
    Normal operation / relay activated Contacts 1 – 2 are open, contacts 2 – 3 are closed.
Protection activated / relay switched off Contacts 1 – 2 are closed, contacts 2 – 3 are open.

    Disadvantages / Limitations

    • Neutral conductor required: the device is designed for a 3x380V AC network with neutral connection.
    • Limited relay contact load: the output contact is rated for up to 5A / 250V AC resistive load, therefore a contactor must be used to control higher-power loads.
    • Not suitable for humid environments: the device must not be operated in locations where it is directly exposed to moisture or water.
    • Incorrect phase sequence blocks the relay: the output will not be activated until the phases are connected in the correct sequence.

What is it suitable for? (Applications)

    • Protection and control circuits for three-phase electric motors
    • Pump and compressor control systems
    • Industrial automation and control cabinets
    • Equipment sensitive to excessively high or low mains voltage
    • Systems where the correct L1-L2-L3 phase sequence must be monitored
    • Contactor control circuits in three-phase electrical systems

What is it not suitable for?

    • Monitoring single-phase 230V AC circuits
    • Three-phase networks without the required neutral connection
    • Direct switching of high-power motors or other loads without a contactor
    • Direct installation in humid locations without a suitable protective enclosure

    Practical example

In an industrial system, a three-phase electric motor is controlled through a contactor. This voltage and phase sequence control relay is installed in the control panel. For example, the undervoltage threshold is set to 330V, the overvoltage threshold to 430V, and the trip delay to 2 seconds. When the mains voltage is within the configured range and the L1-L2-L3 phase sequence is correct, the relay activates the contactor control circuit and the motor can operate. If the voltage drops below 330V, rises above 430V, or the phase sequence changes, the relay output switches off and the contactor disconnects the motor. Once the mains parameters return to normal, the relay automatically restores operation.

Important safety note for the installer

Use the device according to its intended purpose and wiring diagram. Do not use it in a humid environment. Provide a separate switch and automatic circuit breaker in the installation circuit. They must be installed near the device, in a location easily accessible to the operator, and marked as the means for disconnecting the device from the electrical circuit.

    Maintenance

Before performing maintenance or cleaning, switch off the device power supply and disconnect it from the electrical circuit. Clean the housing with a soft cloth. Do not use conductive materials or chemical cleaners that may damage the housing or electronic components. After cleaning, make sure that the device operates correctly.
