  • Photo relay with built-in sensor | outdoor twilight switch | 10 A | 220–240 V AC | ON 10 lx / OFF 40 lx | IP65 | Elsp Group | ES-G03

    Code: ES-G03

Outdoor twilight switch with built-in light sensor: 10 A, 220–240 V AC, IP65, factory thresholds – ON at ~10 lx, OFF at ~40 lx.

  • Photo relay with built-in sensor for outdoor mounting | 10 A | IP65 | Elsp Group ES-G03

ES-G03 is a simple twilight switch mounted directly on a wall or pole outdoors. The light sensor is built into the housing, so neither a distribution board nor a separate sensor is needed: the relay switches the lighting on at dusk and off at dawn. IP65 housing, switching current up to 10 A.

    Key point:
There is nothing to set up. The relay has factory light thresholds – on at about 10 lx, off at about 40 lx – so it only needs to be connected correctly and mounted where the sensor sees the sky. It is the quickest way to automate a yard or facade light.

    Operating principle

The built-in sensor continuously measures ambient light. When it gets dark and the light level drops to about 10 lx, the relay switches the load on; when the light rises to about 40 lx in the morning, it switches the load off.

The difference between the ON and OFF thresholds (hysteresis) prevents the relay from chattering at dusk when the light fluctuates around one value. The thresholds are factory-set – the relay has no sensitivity knob.

What do 10 lx and 40 lx mean?
About 10 lx is already deep dusk, when street lighting is usually on. 40 lx is brighter morning twilight. These thresholds suit yard, path or facade lights that should be on during the dark hours. If you need lighting to switch on earlier (e.g. for a shop window), choose a relay with an adjustable threshold.

    Technical specifications

Product type Twilight switch (photo relay) with built-in light sensor, for outdoor mounting
Manufacturer / model Elsp Group ES-G03
    Supply voltage 220–240 V AC
    Switching current 10 A
    ON threshold about 10 lx – factory-set
    OFF threshold about 40 lx – factory-set
Sensitivity adjustment none – fixed factory thresholds
Light sensor built into the housing
    Protection rating IP65
Mounting on a wall or pole outdoors

    Main functions

    • Automatic switch-on at dusk – lighting switches on at about 10 lx and off at about 40 lx.
    • Built-in sensor – no separate sensor or sensor cable needed.
    • Hysteresis – different ON and OFF thresholds prevent chattering at dusk.
    • IP65 housing – designed for outdoor mounting, protected against dust and water jets.
    • No settings – factory thresholds, works right after connection.

How does it differ from similar models?

    • ES-G02 – Relay from the same line with 10–250 lx thresholds – for when lighting must switch on earlier, in brighter dusk.
    • 65593 – 25 A switching current and 10–100 lx threshold, but IP44 housing – for larger loads under a canopy.
    • F&F AWZ – Also IP65 with a built-in sensor, but 16 A and an adjustable threshold of 2–1000 lx.
    • HOROZ 0890010001 – Cheaper basic relay: 6 A, 5–15 lx, IP44 – for one or a few low-power luminaires.

    Where is it used?

    • Yard, driveway and path luminaires
    • Facade and entrance lighting
    • Lighting of homesteads, garages and farm buildings
    • Car park luminaires
    • Fence, gate and yard area lighting
    • Replacing timers and manual switches in outdoor lighting

    Use by need

    For the electrician.
Installation without a distribution board: directly on the wall next to the luminaire, three wires and no settings.
For the home or farmstead owner.
The yard light comes on by itself every evening and does not burn needlessly during the day.
For the company or farm manager.
Site or building lighting without readjusting timers every season.

    Practical use

If the yard light by the garage is switched on manually and often forgotten, ES-G03 solves this. Screw the relay onto the wall next to the luminaire and point the sensor north or sideways so the luminaire itself does not illuminate it. At dusk the light will switch on by itself and in the morning it will switch off.

    Pros

    • Built-in sensor – no distribution board or separate sensor needed
    • IP65 housing for outdoor mounting
    • 10 A switching current
    • Hysteresis: ON at ~10 lx, OFF at ~40 lx
    • No settings – easy to install

    Cons / limitations

    • Fixed thresholds – the switch-on moment cannot be moved earlier or later; for that there are ES-G02 or F&F AWZ
    • 10 A – for LED floodlight groups with high inrush current use a modular contactor
    • No timer for night-time switch-off

    ⚠ Safety and installation notes

    • Mount the sensor so that the controlled luminaire does not illuminate it – otherwise the relay will start switching itself off.
    • Avoid places where the sensor is lit by car headlights, street lights or lighting from neighbouring buildings.
    • Mount the housing with the cable entry facing down and tighten the gland firmly – only then is IP65 maintained.
    • For LED luminaire groups with high inrush current, the relay must control a contactor coil, not the load directly.
    • Protect the circuit with a circuit breaker matched to the cable cross-section and load.
    • Installation must be carried out by a qualified electrician after disconnecting and verifying the absence of voltage.

    Suitable when you need to:
    • to switch yard or facade lighting on automatically at dusk;
    • a relay without a distribution board, directly outdoors;
    • a simple solution with no settings.
    Check before use:
    • load power and inrush current (LED – via a contactor);
    • whether the controlled luminaire will illuminate the sensor;
    • whether the factory switch-on threshold (~10 lx) suits you.
Important reminder: a twilight switch controls lighting by light level, but it does not replace protective devices and does not switch lighting off in the middle of the night – that requires a relay with a timer.

    FAQ

Can the switch-on threshold be adjusted?
No. ES-G03 has factory thresholds: on at about 10 lx, off at about 40 lx. For an adjustable threshold choose ES-G02 or F&F AWZ.
Why do the ON and OFF thresholds differ?
This is hysteresis – it prevents the relay from chattering at dusk when the light fluctuates around one value.
Can an LED floodlight be connected directly?
A small load – yes, but for larger LED groups use a modular contactor because of inrush current.
Where should the relay be mounted?
Outdoors on a wall or pole where the sensor sees the sky but is not lit by the controlled luminaires or car headlights.
Why does the light flicker or switch on and off?
Most often the luminaire itself illuminates the sensor. Move the relay or point the sensor in another direction.
