Wall-mounted photo relay with built-in light sensor: adjustable 2–30 lx threshold, up to 1000 W incandescent or 4 LED luminaires, 230–240 V AC, IP54.

  • Wall-mounted photo relay with built-in sensor | 1000 W | 2–30 lx | Steinel NightMatic 2000

Steinel NightMatic 2000 is a wall-mounted photo relay from a German manufacturer that switches outdoor lighting on at dusk and off at dawn. The light sensor is built into the housing, so the unit is fixed directly to the wall and wired into the luminaire circuit without a panel or separate sensor. The response threshold is adjustable within 2–30 lx, and the housing is IP54.

    3 yrs
    Manufacturer warranty – 3 years
Steinel provides a 3-year warranty against material and manufacturing defects from the date of purchase.
    Key point:
What usually makes outdoor lighting automation difficult is not the price but the installation: a panel, a cable to the sensor, adjustment. NightMatic 2000 fits everything into one IP54 housing on the wall – connect phase, neutral and load, set the threshold, and from then on the lighting is on only in the dark.
    Sensitivity
    2–30 lx, adjustable
    Load
    1000 W incandescent / 4 LED
    Supply
    230–240 V AC, 50 Hz
    Protection
    IP54, −20…+50 °C
    Mounting
on a wall, sensor in housing

    Operating principle

The light sensor in the housing continuously measures ambient light. When the light drops below the set threshold, the unit switches the connected lighting on, and in the morning, as the light increases, switches it off.

The response threshold is set with an adjuster inside the housing, infinitely variable from approx. 2 to 30 lx. Phase (L), neutral (N) and load (L′) are connected to the terminals; the protective conductor (PE) is connected as required.

What does “max. 4 LED” mean?
In addition to the 1000 W limit for incandescent lamps, the manufacturer specifies a separate limit for lamps with an electronic ballast or driver (fluorescent, energy-saving, LED luminaires): up to 4 pcs of max. 58 W each, total capacitance C ≤ 88 µF. This is because such luminaires briefly draw a high inrush current when switched on, which stresses the relay contact. Connect more LED luminaires via a modular contactor.

    Main functions

    • Automatic switch-on at dusk – lighting is on only when it is dark.
    • Adjustable 2–30 lx threshold – you adapt the switch-on moment to the location.
    • Built-in sensor – no panel or separate sensor needed.
    • Clear load limits – the manufacturer states values for incandescent, fluorescent and LED lamps.
    • IP54 housing – designed for outdoor mounting on a building wall.
    • Low own consumption – less than 0.8 W.

How does it differ from similar models?

    • Night-Matic 3000 – Has a night economy mode – switches lighting off after a set time, threshold 0.5–10 lx.
    • Night-Matic 5000-3 – 2000 W load, 2–1000 lx range and night economy mode – for larger lighting groups.
    • F&F AWZ – 16 A output, wide 2–1000 lx range and IP65 housing.
    • GTV CZ-2 – 3–200 lx threshold and 1–9 h timer – lighting switches off after a set time.

    Where is it used?

    • House entrance, terrace and yard lighting
    • Path, driveway and parking space luminaires
    • Facade and signage lighting
    • Floodlights for outbuildings, garages and warehouses
    • Replacing a manual switch in an existing outdoor circuit

    Use by need

    For the electrician.
A complete solution in one IP54 housing on the wall: L, N, L′, threshold set inside, no panel needed.
For the home or country house owner.
Yard and entrance lit every evening, while luminaires do not burn needlessly during the day.
For the company or farm manager.
Site luminaires switch on according to real light, without adjusting timers.

    Practical use

If the yard luminaires have so far been switched by a manual switch, NightMatic 2000 solves the problem. Mount the photo relay on the north wall where the luminaires themselves do not light it, bring the cable in from below and pierce the condensation holes at the bottom before screwing on the housing. The threshold is set inside – for a yard the lower part of the range is usually enough. From then on the lighting switches on at dusk all year round.

    Pros

    • Sensor and relay in one IP54 housing
    • Adjustable 2–30 lx threshold
    • Up to 1000 W incandescent load
    • Manufacturer-specified LED and fluorescent limits
    • Own consumption < 0.8 W
    • 3-year manufacturer warranty

    Cons / limitations

    • LED luminaires – only up to 4 pcs (≤ 58 W, C ≤ 88 µF); for a larger LED group use a modular contactor
    • No night economy mode – this function is offered by Night-Matic 3000 and Night-Matic 5000-3
    • Range up to 30 lx – for earlier switch-on choose F&F AWZ (2–1000 lx)
    • The threshold is set inside the housing – the cover must be opened for adjustment

    ⚠ Safety and installation notes

    • Mount the photo relay so that the light of the controlled luminaires does not reach it – otherwise the lighting will keep switching itself off.
    • Bring the cables in from below and pierce the condensation holes at the bottom before screwing on the housing.
    • Protect the circuit with a 10 A circuit breaker; cable diameter no more than 10 mm.
    • Do not exceed the stated limits: 1000 W incandescent, 500 W fluorescent, 4 × 58 W LED with electronic ballast.
    • Connect more LED luminaires or floodlights via a modular contactor.
    • Installation must be carried out by a qualified electrician after disconnecting and verifying the absence of voltage.

    Quick selection guide

    2–30 lx
    1000 W / 4 LED
    230–240 V AC
    IP54, wall-mounted
    Suitable when you need to:
    • switch outdoor lighting on automatically at dusk;
    • install the photo relay without a panel, directly on a wall;
    • control a group of up to 4 LED luminaires or incandescent lamps.
    Check before use:
    • the number and power of LED luminaires (more than 4 – via a contactor);
    • that the light of the controlled luminaires will not reach the sensor;
    • whether night-time switch-off is needed – then NightMatic 3000 or 5000-3.
Important reminder: a photo relay switches lighting on by light level, but it does not switch it off in the middle of the night and does not replace protective devices.

    FAQ

How many LED luminaires can be connected?
The manufacturer specifies up to 4 pcs of max. 58 W each (C ≤ 88 µF). More – via a modular contactor.
Where is the response threshold set?
With an adjuster inside the housing, infinitely variable from approx. 2 to 30 lx.
    Can it be mounted outdoors?
Yes, the housing is IP54 and designed for mounting on a building wall; bring the cables in from below.
Why does the lighting flicker or switch off?
Usually the controlled luminaires themselves light up the sensor – move the photo relay further away from them.
    How does NightMatic 3000 differ?
NightMatic 3000 has a night economy mode that switches the lighting off after a set time.
    What is the warranty?
Steinel provides a 3-year warranty against material and manufacturing defects.
