Modular photo relay with external sensor | 16 A | 1–100 lx | VEXEN TWR1
VEXEN TWR1 is a twilight switch that turns lighting on at dusk and off at dawn by itself. The relay is mounted in the panel on a DIN rail (1 module), while the light level is measured by an external sensor installed where it sees daylight. The 1–100 lx sensitivity range suits street, yard, facade and shop window lighting.
Key point:
A timer does not follow sunset or cloud cover, and a manual switch depends on a person. A photo relay reacts to real light: lighting is on only when it is dark, so you use less electricity and do not have to reset times every season.Sensitivity

The external sensor continuously measures ambient illuminance. When light falls below the set threshold, the relay closes the output contact and switches the lighting on; when light rises again, the contact opens.
The threshold is set with the “Lx” knob on the front panel within 1–100 lx. Hysteresis and a switching delay of about 2 min prevent the relay from chattering because of car headlights, lightning or a passing cloud.
The AUTO / ON / OFF mode switch lets you control lighting automatically, switch it on permanently (e.g. when testing luminaires) or switch it off. A green LED indicates supply, a red LED indicates an active output.
Why 1–100 lx?
Street and yard lighting is usually switched on at 5–20 lx, shop windows and signage earlier, at 30–80 lx. The 1–100 lx range covers both cases. If you need control based on bright daylight (e.g. blinds or ventilation), choose a relay with a wider range.Technical specifications

- Automatic switch-on at dusk – lighting is on only when needed.
- Adjustable threshold 1–100 lx – you match the switch-on moment to the site.
- Protection against false triggering – hysteresis and delay ignore short light changes.
- AUTO / ON / OFF modes – lighting can be switched on or off without disconnecting the automation.
- Clear indication – you see at once whether there is supply and whether the output is on.
- Compact housing – only 18 mm wide, fits a small panel.
How does it differ from similar models?
- VEXEN TWR923 – Same series, but 1–10,000 lx range – also suitable for control based on daylight.
- VEXEN VSOU-1 – 1–50,000 lx – the widest range, when the threshold may be at dusk or in bright daylight.
- VEXEN DTWR972 – Digital relay with timer: lighting can be switched off, e.g. after midnight, and on again before dawn.
- Promfactor FRS21 – 25 A output and 2–100 lx – when a larger load is switched directly.
Where is it used?
- Street and driveway lighting
- Yard, path and car park luminaires
- Facade and building outline lighting
- Shop windows and illuminated signs
- Floodlights at warehouses, farms and industrial sites
- Entrances and yard lighting of apartment buildings
- Replacing timers and manual switches in existing panels
Use by need
For the electrician.
A simple solution for outdoor lighting: 1 module in the panel, sensor outside, threshold set with a knob.For the home or farmstead owner.
The yard is lit every evening without adjusting a timer, and luminaires are not wasted during the day.For the company or farm manager.
Site lighting follows real light – lower costs and less manual work.Practical use
If your yard floodlights are switched by a timer that has to be reset every few months, TWR1 solves the problem. Mount the relay in the panel instead of the timer and the sensor on the north wall where the floodlights do not light it. Set the knob to about 10 lx and the mode to AUTO. From then on lighting switches on at dusk all year round without any adjustment.Pros
- Adjustable switch-on threshold 1–100 lx
- 16 A AC1 output contact
- AUTO / ON / OFF modes
- Hysteresis and delay against false triggering
- Only 1 module on the DIN rail
- Wide supply voltage 110–240 V AC
Cons / limitations
- 16 A is rated for AC1 (resistive) load – for LED drivers and floodlights with high inrush current use a modular contactor
- Range only up to 100 lx – for daylight-based control choose VEXEN TWR923 or VEXEN VSOU-1
- No timer for night-time switch-off – VEXEN DTWR972 offers this function
⚠ Safety and installation notes
- Mount the sensor where daylight reaches it but the controlled luminaires do not – otherwise the relay will start switching itself off.
- Do not point the sensor south into direct sun or towards the road where car headlights hit it.
- The relay housing is intended for a panel (IP40 / IP20) – only the sensor is installed outdoors.
- For larger loads the relay must control a contactor coil, not the luminaire group directly.
- Protect the circuit with a suitable circuit breaker and use wire no larger than 2.5 mm² in the terminals.
- Installation must be carried out by a qualified electrician after disconnecting and verifying the absence of voltage.
Quick selection guide
1–100 lx16 A AC1110–240 V AC1 DIN moduleSuitable when you need to:- switch outdoor lighting on automatically at dusk;
- replace a timer or manual switch in the panel;
- be able to switch lighting on or off manually.
Check before use:- load type and inrush current (LED – via a contactor);
- where the sensor will be mounted and how its cable will be routed;
- whether the 1–100 lx range is sufficient.
Important reminder: a photo relay controls lighting by light level, but it does not replace protective devices and does not switch lighting off in the middle of the night – that requires a relay with a timer.☝ Elsprendimai.eu recommends:- Modular contactors – when the LED or floodlight group exceeds the relay's capability.
- Modular time relays – when lighting must be switched off after a set time.
- Photo relays and twilight switches – all twilight switches in one place.
FAQ
Where should the sensor be mounted?
Outdoors, on the north side of the building, where daylight reaches it but not the controlled luminaires or car headlights.What threshold should I set for yard lighting?
Usually 5–20 lx is enough; for shop windows and signage 30–80 lx.Can LED floodlights be connected directly?
A small load – yes, but for larger LED groups use a modular contactor because of inrush current.Why does the lighting not switch on immediately at dusk?
The relay has a delay of about 2 min – this protects against false triggering.What do the ON and OFF modes mean?
ON – lighting is on permanently, OFF – off; AUTO – controlled by light level.Can the relay be installed outdoors?
No, the relay is mounted in a panel on a DIN rail; only the sensor is installed outdoors.Modular photo relay with external sensor | 1–100 lx | 16 A | VEXEN TWR1
