Wall-mounted photo relay with built-in sensor and night economy mode: switches lighting off at night and, if needed, back on in the morning. 0.5–10 lx, up to 1000 W, IP54.

  • Photo relay with night economy mode | 0.5–10 lx | 1000 W | IP54 | STEINEL NightMatic 3000 Vario

STEINEL NightMatic 3000 Vario is a wall-mounted twilight switch with a built-in light sensor. It switches the connected lighting on at dusk, switches it off in the middle of the night according to the selected mode, and can switch it back on early in the morning if it is still dark. The IP54 housing mounts on a wall outdoors or indoors – no separate sensor and no distribution board space needed.

    3 yrs
    Manufacturer's warranty – 3 years
STEINEL provides a 3-year warranty against material and manufacturing defects from the date of sale.
    Key point:
An ordinary photo relay keeps a yard or entrance light on all night, although after midnight hardly anyone needs it. NightMatic 3000 Vario switches the light off at night and, if required, back on in the morning when people leave for work. The relay calculates time from the light cycle, not from a clock, so seasonal changes are compensated automatically.
    Sensitivity
    0.5–10 lx (factory 1 lx)
    Load
up to 1000 W (incandescent, halogen)
    LED load
    up to 64 W, max. 4 pcs
    Night mode
off at night, morning ON / OFF
    Protection
    IP54, −20…+50 °C

    Operating principle

The built-in sensor measures ambient brightness. When light falls below the set threshold, the relay switches the lighting on. The threshold can be set with the TEACH function: press the button at the desired twilight moment and the relay memorises the current brightness. Factory threshold – approx. 1 lx.

The night economy mode switches the lighting off in the middle of the night. Factory switch-off time – approx. 1:30 a.m.; the mode can be disabled or changed. Night economy mode always ends early in the morning, approx. between 4 and 5 a.m.; you choose whether the light switches back on in the morning (if it is still dark) or stays off.

The relay has no clock. A microprocessor calculates the middle of the night from the light cycle of several days, so the switch-off time adapts to the season by itself and is not lost after a power failure. The relay also distinguishes ambient light from the light of the controlled luminaire.

How does “Vario” differ from an ordinary photo relay?
An ordinary photo relay keeps the light on from dusk to dawn. NightMatic 3000 Vario has a night economy mode: the lighting is on in the evening when it is needed, switches off at night and can briefly come on again before dawn. Energy consumption drops without a separate timer or distribution board.

    Main functions

    • Built-in sensor – relay and sensor in one IP54 housing on the wall.
    • Night economy mode – the lighting switches off at night, factory time ~1:30 a.m.
    • Morning mode ON / OFF – before dawn the light can come on again or stay off.
    • TEACH setting – the relay memorises the threshold when you press the button at the desired twilight level.
    • No clock – time is calculated from the light cycle, seasonal changes are compensated.
    • Cable interconnection – several relays can be linked master / master.

How does it differ from similar models?

    • Night-Matic 2000 – Same housing and 1000 W, but no night economy mode: the light is on from dusk to dawn. Threshold 2–30 lx.
    • Night-Matic 5000-3 – More powerful PRO series relay: 2000 W, up to 8 LED luminaires, 2–1000 lx, remote control, 5-year warranty.
    • GTV CZ-2 – Wall-mounted relay with a 1–9 h timer and 3–200 lx threshold: switch-off is set in hours, not by the middle of the night.
    • WYL-CR-M2-SZ-01 – Wall-mounted 3–500 lx relay with operating time setting, IP44 – a simpler, cheaper solution without morning mode.

    Where is it used?

    • Yard and driveway lighting
    • Entrance, stairwell and porch luminaires
    • Outdoor lighting of country houses and farm buildings
    • Evening lighting of signs and facades
    • Car parks
    • Path and site lighting

    Use by need

    For the electrician.
One product instead of a photo relay and a timer: mounted directly on the wall, set with a button and a knob, no programming required.
For the home or farmstead owner.
The yard is lit in the evening and in the morning when you leave for work, while the luminaires do not burn for nothing at night.
For the company or farm manager.
Site lighting without manual control and without unnecessary night hours on the electricity bill.

    Practical use

Two 30 W LED floodlights in a farmstead yard burn all night. NightMatic 3000 Vario is mounted on the north wall so that the floodlight beam does not fall on the sensor, with the cable entering from below. With night mode enabled and morning mode set to ON, the yard is lit in the evening, the floodlights switch off at approx. 1:30 a.m. and, if it is still dark in the morning, come on again until dawn.

    Pros

    • Night economy mode without a separate timer
    • Morning light ON or OFF – selectable
    • Time adapts to the season automatically
    • TEACH threshold setting with a button
    • IP54 housing, operation down to −20 °C
    • 3-year manufacturer's warranty

    Cons / limitations

    • LED load is limited – up to 64 W and max. 4 luminaires
    • Threshold up to 10 lx – not suitable for switching on in brighter twilight
    • No exact switch-off clock – time is calculated from the light cycle
    • A larger LED group requires a contactor

    ⚠ Safety and installation notes

    • Do not cover the sensor window and mount the relay so that light from the controlled luminaires or car headlights does not fall on it.
    • Bring the cable in from below and pierce the condensation drain holes at the bottom before fixing – this keeps IP54.
    • Protect the circuit with a 10 A circuit breaker.
    • For LED luminaires with high inrush current or loads above the limits, use a modular contactor – the relay controls its coil.
    • Before installation, disconnect the supply and verify the absence of voltage.
    • Installation must be carried out by a qualified electrician.

    Quick selection guide

    Night economy mode
    0.5–10 lx
    up to 1000 W / 4 LED
    IP54, wall-mounted
    Suitable when you need to:
    • switch outdoor lighting off at night without a timer;
    • switch the light on in the morning while it is still dark;
    • mount the relay directly on the wall without a distribution board.
    Check before use:
    • the number and power of LED luminaires (max. 4 pcs, up to 64 W);
    • that light from the controlled luminaires does not reach the sensor;
    • that the mounting position allows cable entry from below.
Important reminder: The night switch-off time is not set by a clock but from the light cycle. During the first few nights after installation the relay “learns”, so the switch-off time does not settle immediately.

    FAQ

When does the lighting switch off at night?
Factory setting – approx. 1:30 a.m. The time can be changed or night mode disabled; then the light stays on until dawn.
Does the light come on again in the morning?
If morning mode ON is selected, night economy mode ends at approx. 4–5 a.m. and, if it is still dark, the light comes on until dawn. In OFF mode it stays off.
Do I need to set a clock?
No. The relay calculates time from the day–night cycle, so seasonal changes and power failures do not upset the settings.
How do I set the switch-on threshold?
Press the button at the desired twilight level – the relay memorises the current brightness (TEACH). Range 0.5–10 lx.
How many LED luminaires can be connected?
No more than 4, total LED power up to 64 W. For a larger group, use a contactor.
How does it differ from NightMatic 2000?
NightMatic 2000 has no night economy mode and stays on from dusk to dawn.
