Automatic Transfer Switch ATS 630A – a 4-pole, three-phase 400/415V AC device designed for automatic transfer between two power sources. Suitable for mains–mains and mains–generator systems, it monitors phase loss, undervoltage and overvoltage, supports both automatic and manual control, and provides adjustable transfer delays. The L1, L2, L3 and N conductors are switched.

  • Automatic transfer switch ATS | 4P | 630A | 400/415V AC

Automatic transfer switch ATS designed for three-phase four-wire electrical systems with two independent power sources. The device automatically monitors the condition of the main and backup power supplies and, if the main source fails or its voltage moves outside the configured limits, can transfer the load to the backup source.

This version is 4P, 630A, 400/415V AC. The four-pole construction is intended for a three-phase four-wire system, therefore L1, L2, L3 and N conductors are switched during transfer. The ATS can be used in mains–mains or mains–generator backup power systems.

Automatic transfer between two power sources

The controller monitors the voltage of the main and backup sources. If phase failure, loss of voltage, undervoltage or overvoltage is detected, the ATS can transfer the load to another suitable source after the configured delay. When the main supply is restored, automatic return or operation without automatic return can be selected.

    Operating principle

The ATS has two main power positions: Normal – main power source and Alternative – backup power source. An OFF position is also provided, in which the load is disconnected from both sources.

    Situation ATS operation
Main source is normal The load is supplied from the main source.
Phase or voltage is lost After the configured transfer delay, the backup source is checked and connected if suitable.
Undervoltage When voltage falls below the configured threshold, the source is considered unsuitable.
Overvoltage When voltage exceeds the configured threshold, the ATS can transfer the load to the backup source.
Main source is restored Depending on the configured mode, the ATS can automatically return the load to the main source after the return delay.
Manual mode The operator can manually select the main source, backup source or OFF position.

4P construction – three phases and neutral

The ATS is designed for a three-phase four-wire 400/415V AC system. The four-pole construction allows switching of:

    • L1 – first phase
    • L2 – second phase
    • L3 – third phase
    • N – neutral conductor
    PE conductor is not switched

4P switching includes the three phase conductors and neutral conductor. The protective PE conductor is not part of the ATS switching circuit and must be connected according to the design of the specific electrical system.

    Mains–mains and mains–generator

The controller supports different backup power configurations. Two independent mains supplies can be used, or a main electrical supply together with a backup generator.

    Mains → mains

Transfer between two independent mains supply inputs. Automatic transfer with automatic return or without automatic return is possible.

    Mains → generator

If the main supply fails, the ATS can activate the generator start control and, once the generator reaches suitable operating parameters, transfer the load.

    Automatic generator start control

The Type A controller includes a generator control function. Generator start and stop delays can be programmed.

    Typical operating sequence

Main supply fails → ATS detects the fault → generator start signal is issued → generator voltage is checked after the configured delay → load is transferred to the backup generator.

    Adjustable voltage thresholds

    Parameter Default value Adjustment range
    Undervoltage transfer threshold 187V 160-200V
    Overvoltage transfer threshold 263V 240-290V
    Transfer delay 5s 0-300s
    Return delay 5s 0-300s
    Generator start delay 5s 0-300s
    Generator stop delay 5s 0-300s
Voltage thresholds are specified for 230V phase monitoring

Although the main ATS system is three-phase 400/415V, the controller instructions specify undervoltage and overvoltage thresholds in the 160–290V range. This corresponds to monitoring individual 230V phase voltages relative to neutral.

    Short-circuit characteristics

    100kA
    Iq conditional short-circuit current
    50kA
    Icm short-circuit making capacity
    25kA / 0.2s
    Icw short-time withstand current
ATS does not replace a protective circuit breaker

The specified Iq, Icm and Icw characteristics describe the switching device's capability to operate under short-circuit conditions with appropriate protection coordination. The ATS must be used together with correctly selected circuit breakers or fuses.

    Transfer time

    Contact transfer time 1.5s x (1 ±50%)
    Total operating transfer time 3.3s x (1 ±10%)
    Programmable transfer delay 0-300s

Transfer delay is not the same as the mechanical contact transfer time. The delay determines how long the controller waits before starting the transfer process, while the contact transfer time describes the operation of the ATS mechanism itself.

    Practical application example

In a commercial or industrial facility, the main 400/415V three-phase grid is used as the normal power source and a three-phase generator as the backup source. The ATS continuously monitors the phases and voltage of the main supply. If a phase is lost or the voltage falls below the configured threshold, a generator start signal is issued after the configured delay. Once the generator voltage stabilises, the ATS transfers L1, L2, L3 and N to the backup source. When the main supply is restored, the load can automatically return to the main source after the configured return delay.
