  • Reactive power compensation capacitor | three-phase | 0.8–50 kvar | 400/440 V | 50 Hz | Lifasa POLT / POLB HD

    Three-phase cylindrical power capacitors for reactive power compensation in low-voltage networks. The POLT series with Faston terminals covers lower ratings, while the reinforced POLB HD (Heavy Duty) series with a screw terminal block covers higher ratings. Both series are dry-type, with a self-healing metallized polypropylene dielectric and an overpressure disconnection system.

    Key point:
    Reactive energy loads cables, the transformer and the meter, and once the permitted tan φ is exceeded the supplier bills it separately. A correctly selected capacitor generates this power locally – at the motor or in the compensation cabinet – reducing line current, losses and reactive energy charges.

    Operating principle

    The capacitor is fixed with an M12 threaded stud, which also serves as the earthing point. POLT is connected via double 6.35 mm Faston terminals, POLB HD via a terminal block with clamp-type terminals (16, 25 or 35 mm² depending on rating).

    Once connected, the capacitor generates capacitive reactive power that offsets the inductive power of loads (motors, transformers, reactors). The dielectric is self-healing: a microscopic breakdown is isolated and the capacitor keeps operating.

    In case of an internal fault, rising pressure inside the can triggers the overpressure disconnection system, which disconnects the capacitor from the network (POLB HD – all three phases). The result: a higher power factor, lower line current and lower reactive energy charges.

    Why choose POLT and POLB HD?
    The full power range in one place: POLT suits individual compensation of small motors and small banks, POLB HD suits automatic PFC cabinet steps where long service life and higher currents matter.

    Key functions

    • Reactive power compensation – reduces tan φ and the reactive energy charge.
    • Self-healing dielectric – local breakdowns do not put the capacitor out of service.
    • Overpressure disconnection system – in case of an internal fault the capacitor disconnects instead of bursting or catching fire.
    • Dry construction – no liquid impregnation, no risk of leaks in the cabinet.
    • Low losses (≤ 0.4 W/kvar) – less heat in the compensation cabinet.
    • M12 stud – fixing and earthing in one operation.

    Where is it used?

    • Automatic reactive power compensation cabinets (steps)
    • Fixed compensation banks in distribution boards
    • Individual compensation of induction motors (pumps, fans, compressors)
    • Compensation of transformer no-load reactive power
    • Production halls, warehouses, refrigeration equipment
    • Agricultural sites – grain dryers, farms, grain cleaning equipment
    • Replacing capacitors in older compensation cabinets

    Use by need

    Plant energy manager.
    Quick replacement of failed steps with capacitors of the same rating, without replacing the whole cabinet.
    PFC cabinet builder.
    The full power range in one place – from small POLT units to POLB HD steps.
    Electrical installer.
    Compact POLT mounted right at the motor starter – individual compensation without a separate cabinet.

    Practical application

    If the PFC controller shows that a step no longer reaches its rated power and measurement confirms reduced capacitance, replace the capacitor with one of the same power and voltage – check at which voltage the old capacitor's power was stated (400 or 440 V), as this determines the actual kvar delivered.

    Advantages

    • Wide power range: 0.8–50 kvar
    • Overpressure disconnection system
    • Dry construction, no liquids
    • Low losses – ≤ 0.4 W/kvar
    • POLB HD – 150 000 h life expectancy
    • Compliance with IEC/EN 60831

    Disadvantages / limitations

    • POLT discharge resistors sold separately
    • POLT without hood is IP00 – install only inside a closed cabinet
    • Not suitable for networks with high harmonics (VFDs) without reactors – a detuned solution is required
    • Power depends on voltage: a 440 V capacitor delivers ~17 % less kvar on a 400 V network

    Safety and installation notes

    • Installation and connection must be carried out by a qualified electrician with the supply disconnected.
    • A disconnected capacitor may retain a dangerous voltage – wait for discharge and verify absence of voltage before touching the terminals.
    • Use POLT only with discharge resistors – without them the capacitor stays charged for a long time.
    • Leave the free space above the capacitor specified by the manufacturer – when the overpressure disconnector operates, the can expands upwards.
    • The capacitor can must be earthed via the M12 stud.
    • In automatic cabinets, switch steps with capacitor-duty contactors with inrush current limiting.
    • For individual motor compensation, the capacitor power must not exceed the motor's no-load reactive power – otherwise self-excitation may occur after the motor is switched off.

    Quick selection guide

    0.8–6.2 kvar → POLT
    8–50 kvar → POLB HD
    3 phases | 50 Hz
    IEC / EN 60831
    Suitable when you need to:
    • replace a failed PFC cabinet step;
    • compensate an individual motor or transformer;
    • build a fixed or automatic compensation bank.
    Check before use:
    • at which voltage the required power is stated (400 or 440 V);
    • whether there are VFDs in the network and the harmonic level (THDu);
    • terminal type and available space in the cabinet (Ø, height);
    • whether POLT needs discharge resistors and a hood.
    Important reminder: a capacitor does not replace the PFC controller, contactors and protective devices – automatic compensation requires the complete system, and a harmonic-rich network also requires reactors.

    FAQ

    What is the difference between POLT and POLB HD?
    POLT is a compact low-power series with Faston terminals, POLB HD is a reinforced higher-power series with a terminal block, fitted discharge resistors and a 150 000 h life expectancy.
    Why does capacitor power differ at 400 V and 440 V?
    Reactive power is proportional to the square of the voltage, so a capacitor rated 440 V delivers about 83 % of its rated power on a 400 V network.
    Does POLT have discharge resistors?
    No, POLT discharge resistors are an external accessory ordered separately.
    Is it suitable for networks with VFDs?
    With significant harmonics, capacitors must be used with detuned reactors and a correspondingly higher rated voltage – we recommend basing the solution on a network analysis.
    How is the capacitor mounted?
    It is screwed to the mounting plate with the M12 stud, which also provides earthing.
    How do I select the required power?
    Based on the actual active power and the existing and target cos φ – if data is missing, a network measurement with an analyzer is worthwhile.
