Modular photo relay with external sensor | 16 A | 1–100 lx | VEXEN TWR1
Eti SOU-1 (code 002470011) is a twilight switch that switches its output according to real illuminance. The relay is mounted in the panel on a DIN rail (1 module), while light is measured by the supplied external IP65 sensor with cover and holder, mounted outdoors on a wall. Two ranges – 1–100 lx and 100–50,000 lx – suit both outdoor lighting at dusk and daylight-based control.
Key point:
One relay covers the whole light threshold spectrum needed in practice. The 1CO changeover contact, input S and the TEST position let you use it not only for a simple “switch on at dusk”, but also in automation with a timer or for checks when commissioning a site.Sensitivity

external, IP65, cable up to 50 mOperating principle
The external sensor continuously measures illuminance. When light falls below the set threshold, the relay switches output contact 15–16–18 and turns the lighting on; when light rises above the threshold plus hysteresis, the contact returns to its initial position.
A selector chooses range LUX1 (1–100 lx) or LUX2 (100–50,000 lx), and the exact threshold is set with the front panel knob. The delay is adjustable from 0 to 2 min, so the relay does not react to car headlights, lightning or a passing cloud.
Input S is used for additional control, e.g. a timer blocking the lighting during night hours. In the TEST position the functions are switched off and the output contact is switched on – this checks the load connection or a failed lamp. A green LED shows supply, a red LED shows an active output.
Why 1–50,000 lx?
Outdoor lighting is usually switched on at 5–20 lx, shop windows and signage at 30–80 lx; the 1–100 lx range is used for this. The 100–50,000 lx range is intended for daylight-based control – blinds, awnings, greenhouse or room shading, where the threshold reaches thousands of lux.Technical specifications

- Two sensitivity ranges – 1–100 lx for dusk and 100–50,000 lx for daylight.
- 1CO changeover contact – a circuit can be switched on at dusk or during daylight.
- Adjustable delay 0–2 min – short light changes do not switch the output.
- Input S – a timer or switch can block the output during night hours.
- TEST position – the output is forced on so you can check the load connection.
- IP65 sensor included – with cover and holder, cable up to 50 m.
How does it differ from similar models?
- VEXEN VSOU-1 – Close equivalent: the same two ranges, 1CO 16 A and input S, but the external sensor is rated IP56.
- SOU-1/UNI – The same function, but a universal 12–240 V AC/DC supply – when the control circuit is 12 V, 24 V or another voltage.
- VEXEN TWR923 – 110–240 V AC supply, range up to 10,000 lx and a 1NO contact – when simple switching is enough.
- VEXEN DTWR972 – Digital relay with a daily programme – night-time switch-off without a separate timer on input S.
Where is it used?
- Street, driveway and car park lighting
- Yard, facade and building outline lighting
- Shop windows and illuminated signs
- Control of blinds, awnings and shading by daylight
- Lighting automation in greenhouses and farm buildings
- Panels that already use Eti modular devices
Use by need
For the electrician.
One model for dusk and daylight tasks; the TEST position lets you quickly check the load circuit when commissioning.For the home or farmstead owner.
Yard lighting switches on at dusk without adjusting a timer, and with a timer on input S it switches off for the night.For the company or farm manager.
Site lighting follows real light – it does not burn during the day and needs no manual switching.Practical use
If a shop sign must be lit at dusk but switch off after 23:00, SOU-1 solves this with a single timer. Mount the relay in the panel and the sensor on the north wall, where the light of the sign does not reach it. Select LUX1, a threshold of about 30 lx and a delay of about 1 min. Connect the timer contact to input S for the night hours. After installation, briefly turn the selector to TEST and check that the sign lights up.Pros
- Wide range 1–50,000 lx (two sub-ranges)
- 1CO changeover contact 16 A AC1
- External IP65 sensor with cover and holder
- Adjustable delay 0–2 min
- Input S and TEST position
- Only 1 module on the DIN rail
Cons / limitations
- 16 A is rated for AC1 (resistive) load – for LED drivers and floodlights with high inrush current use a modular contactor
- No built-in timer – night-time switch-off requires a timer on input S or VEXEN DTWR972
- 230 V AC supply only – for 12/24 V systems choose SOU-1/UNI (12–240 V AC/DC)
⚠ Safety and installation notes
- Mount the sensor where daylight reaches it but the controlled luminaires do not – otherwise the relay will start switching itself off.
- Do not point the sensor towards the road where car headlights hit it; increase the delay for the same purpose.
- The relay housing is intended for a panel (IP40 from the front, IP20 terminals) – only the IP65 sensor is installed outdoors.
- Sensor cable up to 50 m; do not route it together with power cables.
- For larger loads the relay must control a contactor coil, not the luminaire group directly; protect the circuit with a suitable circuit breaker.
- Installation must be carried out by a qualified electrician after disconnecting and verifying the absence of voltage.
Quick selection guide
1–50,000 lx1CO 16 A AC1230 V ACIP65 sensorSuitable when you need to:- control lighting or other equipment both at dusk and by daylight;
- have a changeover contact and the option to block the output via input S;
- use a relay that matches other Eti modular devices in the panel.
Check before use:- load type and inrush current (LED – via a contactor);
- where the sensor will be mounted and whether the cable stays within 50 m;
- whether the control circuit voltage is 230 V AC.
Important reminder: a photo relay controls lighting by light level, but it does not replace protective devices; night-time switch-off via input S requires a separate timer.☝ Elsprendimai.eu recommends:- Modular contactors – when the LED or floodlight group exceeds the relay's capability.
- Modular time relays – a timer on input S to switch lighting off at night.
- Photo relays and twilight switches – all twilight switches in one place.
FAQ
Which range should I choose?
For outdoor lighting and shop windows – LUX1 (1–100 lx); for blinds, shading and other daylight-based control – LUX2 (100–50,000 lx).Is the sensor included?
Yes – an external IP65 sensor with cover and holder for wall mounting.What does IP40 in relay descriptions mean?
It is the protection of the relay housing from the front panel in the distribution board. Only the sensor is installed outdoors, and it is rated IP65.Can LED floodlights be connected directly?
A small load – yes, but for larger LED groups use a modular contactor because of inrush current.What is the TEST position for?
The output contact is switched on regardless of light – you can check that the load is connected correctly and that the lamp is not burnt out.How far can the sensor be?
Up to 50 m from the relay, using a standard wire.Modular photo relay with external sensor | 1–50,000 lx | 16 A | Eti SOU-1
