  • Magnetic pulse sensor (reed switch) | NO | max. 5 W | pulse input | for D105 pulse analyzer | smart-MAIC | NO5W

    Code: NO5W

Normally open (NO) reed switch sensor for reading pulses from a gas meter. It is attached to the meter's counter mechanism and connected with two wires to a smart-MAIC D105 pulse input. It works with meters that have a built-in magnet.

  • Magnetic pulse sensor (reed switch) | NO | max. 5 W | pulse input | for D105 pulse analyzer | smart-MAIC | NO5W

The NO5W is a normally open (NO) reed switch sensor that closes when the magnet in the meter's digit drum passes by. It is attached at the lowest digit of a gas meter and connected with two wires to a pulse input of the smart-MAIC D105 pulse analyzer. This turns a mechanical meter without an electronic output into a remotely read one.

    Key point:
You see gas consumption in the cloud by the hour and day without manual meter readings. The sensor does not change the meter or touch the gas system – it only picks up magnetic pulses from the outside. The meter must have a magnet; check this in the meter documentation or by testing.

    Connection to D105 and integration

    • Pulse input – The two reed switch wires connect to one of the two D105 pulse inputs. Polarity does not matter – it is a dry contact.
    • Power – The sensor needs no power – the D105 detects the contact closure.
    • Pulse weight – Most often 1 pulse = 0.01 m³ of gas; in the dashboard set a multiplier of 0.01 and two decimal places. The exact weight is given by the meter manufacturer.
    • Cloud, MQTT, API – Consumption is shown in the smart-MAIC dashboard, sent via MQTT / API, and notifications about unusual consumption can be set.

    Operating principle

The sensor is placed against the meter's lowest digit drum and fixed (e.g. with double-sided tape) where pulses are detected reliably. The wires are run to the D105, which is installed at least 0.8–1 m from the gas meter.

Each time the drum magnet passes the reed switch, the contact closes briefly and the D105 counts one pulse.

In the dashboard pulses are converted to m³: you see hourly, daily and monthly consumption as well as the cumulative reading.

    Why choose the NO5W sensor?
It is the simplest way to bring an existing gas meter into remote metering: no meter replacement and no intervention in the gas system. You see how much gas a boiler or process unit uses and can compare periods.

    Technical specifications

Product type Magnetic pulse sensor (reed switch)
    Manufacturer / model smart-MAIC / NO5W
    Contact type NO (normally open)
    Max. switching power 5 W
    Housing plastic
Purpose reading pulses from gas meters with a magnet
Typical pulse weight 0.01 m³ / pulse (depends on the meter)
Connection to D105 pulse input, 2 wires, no power needed

    Key functions

    • Reads magnetic pulses – from the lowest digit of the gas meter
    • No power needed – dry NO contact, the D105 detects the closure
    • Non-invasive installation – the meter and gas system are untouched
    • Consumption in m³ – pulses are converted in the dashboard
    • Notifications – about unusual or night-time consumption
    • Combined metering – gas, water and temperature in one D105

How does it differ from similar products?

    • DN15 (G1/2") flow sensor – Installed in a water pipe and generates pulses itself; the NO5W installs nothing in the system, it only reads the existing meter's magnet.
    • G1/4 pressure sensor – Measures pressure via the analog input, not consumption; the NO5W uses a pulse input.
    • D105-10 / D105-12 – The analyzer itself with 2 pulse inputs; the NO5W is a sensor that occupies one of them.

    Where is it used?

    • Gas meters in detached houses
    • Gas metering in apartments
    • Boiler rooms and heating substations
    • Bakeries, kitchens and other process gas users
    • Rental homes and commercial premises
    • Energy audit measurements

    Use by need

    Homeowners.
See how much gas the boiler uses per day and assess the effect of changes to heating settings.
    Rental property managers.
Record gas consumption remotely without site visits or asking tenants for readings.
    Energy auditors.
Collect a gas consumption profile over a few weeks without replacing the meter.

    Practical use

If gas readings are taken once a month, the NO5W with a D105 shows consumption every hour: if you notice the boiler running more at night than expected, you can adjust the thermostat schedule and see the result the very next day.

    Pros

    • No need to replace the gas meter
    • No power required
    • Simple two-wire connection
    • Plastic housing, easy to attach
    • Data in the cloud, via MQTT and API

    Cons / limitations

    • Works only with meters that have a magnet – check before buying
    • The position must be found by trial until pulses are stable
    • The D105 has only 2 pulse inputs – more meters require another D105
    • No technical data is provided on switching distance or cable length

    Safety and installation notes

    • Install the D105 at least 0.8–1 m from the gas meter, following gas meter installation requirements
    • Attaching the sensor must not damage the meter seals or housing
    • The 230 V side of the D105 is wired by a qualified electrician with the power off
    • Route signal wires separately from power cables

    Quick selection guide

    NO contact
    Max. 5 W
    No power needed
    D105 pulse input
    Suitable when you need:
    • remote visibility of gas consumption
    • keeping the existing gas meter
    • comparing consumption by hour and day
    Check before use:
    • that the gas meter has a magnet
    • that the D105 has a free pulse input
    • what pulse weight the meter manufacturer specifies
Important reminder: The sensor works only with the smart-MAIC D105 pulse analyzer (sold separately) and only with gas meters that have a magnet. It does not replace official billing metering.

    FAQ

Will it work with my gas meter?
Yes, if the meter's lowest digit drum has a magnet; this is stated in the meter documentation or can be checked by testing.
Which D105 input does it connect to?
To one of the two pulse inputs.
    Does it need power?
No, it is a dry NO contact.
    What is the pulse weight?
Most often 0.01 m³ per pulse, but the exact value is given by the meter manufacturer.
    How is it attached?
At the lowest digit drum, e.g. with double-sided tape, where pulses are stable.
How far from the meter should the D105 be?
At least 0.8–1 m from the gas meter.
