Solar radiation sensor | 0…1800 W/m² | 0.3…3 μm | 12–24 V DC | RS485 Modbus | for D105 pulse analyzer | smart-MAIC | D105 Solar
The D105 Solar is a solar radiation sensor that measures solar energy falling on a horizontal surface in W/m². It connects to the RS485 input of the smart-MAIC D105 pulse analyzer and transmits a digital value via Modbus. Suitable for weather stations, greenhouses, agriculture and research projects.
Key point:
Radiation shows how much sun actually reaches a location: cloud cover, shading, seasonal differences. With this value in the D105 system you can compare it with other measurements and use it in automation, for example for shading screens. A D105 G4 Extended or later and a separate 12–24 V DC supply are required.Range

RS485 ModbusPower supply
12–24 V DC (not included)Connection to D105 and integration
- RS485 input (Modbus) – The sensor's A / B wires connect to the D105 RS485 terminals (terminals 11); the D105 reads the radiation value via Modbus.
- D105 version – The manufacturer states that the sensor works with the D105 G4 Extended or later – check your D105 version and licence before ordering.
- 12–24 V DC power supply – The D105 does not provide this voltage – a separate 12–24 V DC power supply is required (not included).
- Cloud, MQTT, API – Radiation in W/m² is shown in the smart-MAIC cloud, available via MQTT and API, and can be a relay or notification condition.
How it works
The sensor is mounted horizontally in an open location where it is not shaded by buildings, trees or masts. The A / B wires go to the D105 RS485 terminals, the power wires to the 12–24 V DC supply.
The sensor registers solar radiation in the 0.3…3 μm spectral range and provides the value in W/m² in a Modbus register. The D105 reads it periodically via RS485.
In the cloud you see the daily radiation curve, can compare days and seasons, and set thresholds for notifications or relay control; the data is available via MQTT and API.
Why choose the D105 Solar?
It lets you measure solar radiation with the same D105 system that already monitors water, temperature or wind. No separate data logger is needed – all field measurements in one cloud and one history.Technical specifications

- Radiation measurement 0…1800 W/m² – from an overcast day to a clear summer noon.
- Wide 0.3…3 μm spectrum – registers total solar radiation, not just visible light.
- 1 W/m² resolution – suitable for the daily curve and trends.
- RS485 Modbus – digital value without analog signal conversion.
- Relay and notification conditions – e.g. controlling a shading screen when a threshold is exceeded.
- MQTT and API – data is passed to BMS, SCADA or analytics systems.
How does it differ from similar products?
- TEMT6000 light sensor – The TEMT6000 is a phototransistor for visible light (peak sensitivity 570 nm) on the analog input, powered at 5 V; the D105 Solar measures radiant power in W/m² via RS485.
- T4W anemometer – Another weather station measurement – wind speed; also RS485 and 12–24 V DC, so both can share one power supply.
- D280 – Air temperature, humidity and pressure via the 1-Wire input – together with the D105 Solar it shows the greenhouse or outdoor climate.
Where is it used?
- local weather station
- greenhouse shading and lighting control
- agronomic observations and field trials
- control of building shading systems (blinds, awnings)
- on-site assessment of solar resource before planning projects
- research and training stations
Use by need
Greenhouse technologist.
Sees how much sun the plants receive and automatically extends the shading screen when radiation is too high.Building shading system installer.
Gets an objective W/m² signal for blind or awning automation.Researcher or educational institution.
Keeps a solar radiation history together with temperature and wind in one system.Practical use
If plants in a greenhouse need protection from excessive summer sun, the D105 Solar measures radiation and, when the set threshold is exceeded, the D105 switches on the shading screen actuator via an intermediate relay. The owner sees in the cloud how many hours a day the screen was needed.Pros
- wide 0…1800 W/m² range and 0.3…3 μm spectrum
- 1 W/m² resolution
- non-linearity and annual stability < ±2%
- operating temperature from −40 °C
- digital RS485 Modbus interface
- data in one smart-MAIC cloud with other D105 measurements
Cons / limitations
- requires a D105 G4 Extended or later – older D105 units do not support the sensor
- requires a separate 12–24 V DC power supply
- cosine response < ±10% – error is larger at low sun angles; it is not a reference instrument
- if you only need the visible light level indoors, the TEMT6000 is a simpler solution
Safety and installation notes
- Mount horizontally so that no objects shade the sensor at any time of day.
- Keep the sensor surface clean – dust, snow or bird droppings reduce the readings.
- Carry out roof work in line with requirements for work at height.
- Protect the RS485 line against surges, especially on long outdoor runs.
- The D105 relay is rated up to 50 W; use an intermediate relay or contactor for actuators.
Quick selection guide
0…1800 W/m²0.3…3 μmRS485 ModbusD105 G4 ExtendedSuitable when you need:- to measure on-site solar radiation in W/m²
- to automate shading based on radiation
- to keep a meteorological history in the D105 system
Check before use:- that your D105 is G4 Extended or later
- that you have a 12–24 V DC power supply
- that the mounting location is unshaded all day
Important reminder: The D105 Solar measures radiation but does not control a solar power plant or count energy produced. Without a D105 G4 Extended and a separate 12–24 V DC supply the sensor will not work.FAQ
Which D105 input does the sensor connect to?
To the RS485 input (A / B terminals), via Modbus.Is any D105 suitable?
No, the manufacturer specifies the D105 G4 Extended or later.Does the D105 power the sensor?
No, a separate 12–24 V DC power supply is required and is not included. How does it differ from the TEMT6000?
The TEMT6000 measures visible light via the analog input, the D105 Solar measures solar irradiance in W/m² in the 0.3…3 μm range. Will the sensor show how much energy a solar plant produced?
No, it measures radiation only; production metering requires an electricity meter or energy monitor. How should the sensor be mounted?
Horizontally, in an open, unshaded location, with access for cleaning the surface.D105 Solar radiation sensor for the smart-MAIC D105 analyzer
The D105 Solar measures solar radiation from 0 to 1800 W/m² and transmits it to the smart-MAIC D105 (G4 Extended) via RS485 Modbus. Suitable for weather stations, greenhouses and shading automation.
