  • Wind direction sensor | 0–360°, 16 directions of 22.5° | 12–24 V DC | RS485 Modbus RTU | for D105 pulse analyzer | smart-MAIC | T5W

    Code: T5W

The T5W wind vane sensor detects wind direction in 16 sectors of 22.5° (value 0–15, 0 = north). It connects to the RS485 input of the smart-MAIC D105 via Modbus RTU. 12–24 V DC supply is not included.

  • Wind direction sensor | 0–360°, 16 directions of 22.5° | 12–24 V DC | RS485 Modbus RTU | for D105 pulse analyzer | smart-MAIC | T5W

The T5W is an aluminium alloy wind vane that shows where the wind is blowing from. Direction is given in 16 sectors of 22.5° and transmitted via RS485 to the smart-MAIC D105 pulse analyzer. It is usually installed together with the T4W anemometer.

    Key point:
Wind speed alone is often not enough: direction determines which side of the building, which opening or roof window needs protection, and where smoke or dust will settle. The T5W provides a digital direction value of 0–15, which is easy to use in notification and automation conditions. A separate 12–24 V DC supply is required.

    Connection to D105 and integration

    • RS485 input (Modbus RTU) – The A / B wires connect to the D105 RS485 terminals (terminals 11). The RS485 interface is set for wind sensors in the D105 Counter Config menu.
    • 12–24 V DC power supply – The D105 does not provide this voltage – use a separate 12–24 V DC power supply (not included); the same supply that powers the T4W can be used if it has enough capacity.
    • Data in D105 – Direction is stored in parameter [T5] on a 0–15 scale; multiplying by 22.5 gives degrees.
    • Orientation – The sensor must be aligned to north using its mark. If there is no mark, connect it, find the position where it shows 0 and mark north yourself.

    How it works

The vane is mounted on a mast in an open location and aligned to north using the mark. The A / B wires go to the D105 RS485 terminals, power comes from a 12–24 V DC supply.

The wind turns the vane, the sensor determines one of 16 sectors and provides the value in a Modbus RTU register. The D105 reads the value via RS485 and records it in parameter [T5].

In the cloud you see the direction value and how it changes over time; multiply by 22.5 to get degrees. The data is available via MQTT and API.

    Why choose the T5W?
Together with the T4W it turns the D105 into a wind station: speed and direction are visible on one chart, and automation rules can take into account which side a strong wind is coming from.

    Key functions

    • 16 directions of 22.5° – enough to distinguish main and intermediate directions.
    • Digital value 0–15 – easy to use in notification and relay conditions.
    • RS485 Modbus RTU – the value is transmitted without analog signal noise.
    • Works together with the T4W – speed [T4] and direction [T5] in the same D105.
    • History in the cloud – prevailing wind analysis for a week, month or season.
    • MQTT and API – direction is passed to BMS, home automation or SCADA.

How does it differ from similar products?

    • T4W anemometer – The T4W measures speed from 0.4 to 30 m/s, the T5W measures direction. On its own, the T5W does not show whether the wind is strong.
    • D105 Solar – Solar radiation sensor in W/m² – another weather station measurement, also via RS485 with 12–24 V DC.
    • DS18b20 – Temperature sensor on the 1-Wire input, powered from the D105 – adds air temperature to a weather station.

    Where is it used?

    • farm or homestead weather station
    • monitoring of livestock buildings and odour dispersion
    • planning smoke, dust or spraying work
    • construction site and crane zone monitoring
    • control of building ventilation and natural airing
    • educational and research projects

    Use by need

    Agronomist.
Checks wind direction before spraying and plans work so that the product does not drift onto neighbouring fields.
    Building engineer.
Uses direction to decide which façade's windows or vents to close during strong wind.
    Livestock farm owner.
Monitors which way odours spread and keeps a history for discussions with neighbours or authorities.

    Practical use

If a building has natural ventilation openings on several façades, the T5W together with the T4W allows a rule to be set: when a strong wind blows from the west, the D105 relay, via an intermediate relay, closes the west façade openings while the others stay open.

    Pros

    • 16 directions of 22.5° for basic wind analysis
    • digital RS485 Modbus RTU interface
    • aluminium alloy housing
    • operating temperature up to +80 °C
    • works together with the T4W in the same D105
    • data in the cloud, MQTT and API

    Cons / limitations

    • requires a separate 12–24 V DC power supply
    • operating temperature from −20 °C – a limit worth considering in colder climates
    • direction is resolved in 22.5° steps – not suitable where exact degrees are needed
    • without the T4W you will not know wind strength – choose both sensors for a weather station

    Safety and installation notes

    • Before final fixing, align the sensor to north and check that it shows 0.
    • Mount in an open location, away from roof ridges and chimneys that distort the airflow.
    • Carry out work at height in line with safety requirements.
    • Earth the mast and protect the RS485 line against surges.
    • Connect the 12–24 V DC supply only to the sensor's power wires, not to the D105 signal terminals.

    Quick selection guide

    16 directions
    0–15 (0 = north)
    RS485 Modbus RTU
    12–24 V DC
    Suitable when you need:
    • to know the prevailing wind direction
    • automation rules based on wind direction
    • a complete weather station together with the T4W
    Check before use:
    • that you can align the sensor to north
    • that you have a 12–24 V DC power supply
    • that the D105 RS485 input is assigned to wind sensors, not another Modbus device
Important reminder: The T5W shows direction only – wind speed requires the T4W. Without the D105 and a separate 12–24 V DC supply the sensor will not work.

Can it be connected together with the T4W?
Yes, the manufacturer's guide covers connecting both sensors to the D105.
What if there is no north mark on the sensor?
Connect the sensor, find the position where it shows 0 and mark north yourself.

T5W wind direction sensor for the smart-MAIC D105 analyzer

The T5W detects wind direction in 16 sectors of 22.5° and transmits it to the smart-MAIC D105 via RS485 Modbus RTU. Together with the T4W it forms a wind station for a farm, building or construction site.
