Electrical network analysers – how to choose the right one
This group contains six types of devices – from simple Wi-Fi modules for homes to power quality analysers for industry. The choice depends on three questions: where the data must go (app and cloud or SCADA / BMS via Modbus), how many circuits you will monitor and whether you need power quality analysis (harmonics, events, waveforms).

Three-phase models require a neutral conductor, communication requires 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. With a solid-core CT the conductor must be disconnected and passed through the ring; a split-core CT and a Rogowski coil are fitted without disconnecting the conductor.
⚠ What to check before buying
- Network: single-phase or three-phase; three-phase Smart-MAIC models require a neutral.
- Current and conductor size: whether the cable or busbar fits the CT window (Ø13 / 23 / 32 mm) or a Rogowski coil is needed.
- CT type: split-core is fitted without disconnection, solid-core requires disconnecting the conductor.
- Communication: Wi-Fi (2.4 GHz) or RS485 Modbus / Ethernet – must match your system.
- Whether current sensors are included – e.g. for the ME537 they are purchased separately.
- Whether you need power quality functions (harmonics, events, waveforms) or energy monitoring is enough.
- Mounting: DIN rail or panel door – check the cut-out size on the product page.
⚠ Most common mistakes
Mistake Consequence CT fitted backwards (current direction) Negative power, consumption shown as export CT and voltage input from different phases Wrong power and cos φ CT ratio not set in a panel analyser Readings wrong by a fixed factor ⚡ 1 A / 5 A CT secondary open under load Dangerous voltage, CT damage 5 GHz Wi-Fi or weak signal in a metal panel No connection – a 2.4 GHz network or an external antenna is needed RS485 A+/B− swapped or no 120 Ω at the end of the line No communication or intermittent data ⚡ Safe installation
- Analysers must be installed and connected only by a qualified electrician, with the power switched off and absence of voltage verified.
- Protect the voltage measuring circuits according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- The secondary circuit of 1 A / 5 A current transformers must never be opened under load. Rogowski coils and 333 mV output sensors do not have this hazard.
Frequently asked questions
How does an analyser differ from an electricity meter?
An analyser shows instantaneous values (voltage, current, power, cos φ) and logs their history – for diagnostics and control. A meter is designed for kWh metering; if tenants are billed from the readings, choose a MID electricity meter.
When should I choose a Rogowski coil?
When the current is high and the cable or busbar does not fit the CT window. The flexible coil is wrapped around the conductor without disconnecting it.
Can a solar power plant be monitored?
Analysers with bidirectional metering measure energy imported from and exported to the grid. Compatibility with inverter power / export control must be confirmed separately – bidirectional metering alone is not enough for that.
Want to measure first and buy later?
Rent the Smart-MAIC D103 analyser for 7, 14 days or longer – analyser rental.
Need to monitor water, temperature or CO₂ as well?
This is what the D105 pulse analyser and sensors are for – see the Accessories for smart network analysers group.
Need help choosing?
Tell us the network type, supply current, where the data must go and what you want to monitor – we will select the right analyser and current sensors. Current transformers and Rogowski coils are in a separate group.
